The thirteenth edition of Amsterdam Light Festival will take place from November 28, 2024 to January 19, 2025, with the theme Rituals .

ANNUAL TRADITION

Amsterdam Light Festival has been an annual tradition for over 12 years, illuminating the city during the darkest months of the year. The upcoming edition is a special one, as it coincides with the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam. For a whole year, residents, districts and institutions celebrate and commemorate the unique character of Amsterdam. What better way to add sparkle to this festive occasion than with a ritual?

RITUALS

Rituals have always been connected to all kinds of transformations: from past to future, from winter to summer, from childhood to adulthood. Light plays a crucial role in many forms of ritual, as a symbol of joy, energy and life. We use fireworks to ring in the new year, candles to commemorate and midsummer fires to welcome the solstice. Light adds something mystical and sacred to a ritual like no other element can. And rituals connect. Rituals bring people together.

EXPERIENCES

This year, 27 unique light artworks will be developed by artists from home and abroad. The artworks can be admired from the water or land. In our ticket shop you will find the different types of experiences. Click on a product for more information about, for example, boarding locations and departure times.

TICKET SHOP

This year too, the Hoftuin will be transformed into the heart of the festival, aptly named  Light Garden . In this special courtyard of the Diaconie you will find two light artworks, an information point and catering. Every Friday in December there will be programming with lectures and music. More information will follow!

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Edition 13: Rituals will take place from November 28, 2024 to January 19, 2025. The lights will be on every day at 5:00 PM, from Sunday to Tuesday they will be on until 10:00 PM, from Wednesday to Saturday until 11:00 PM. During the Christmas holidays the lights will be on every day until 11:00 PM. We are closed on Tuesday, December 31.

This year, 27 unique light artworks will be created by artists from all around the world. The artworks can be admired by boat, by foot or by bike. Our festival heart in the Hoftuin will return, fittingly called Light Garden. Edition 13: Rituals takes place from 28 November 2024 until 19 January 2025. The lights are on every day at 5.00 p.m. From Sunday to Tuesday the lights are on until 10.00 p.m., from Wednesday to Saturday until 11.00 p.m. During the Christmas break the lights are on daily until 11.00 p.m. We're closed on 31 December.

Edition 13: Rituals

Every winter a new edition of Amsterdam Light Festival is organized, with artworks that are created especially for the festival. Next to that, in collaboration with artists, partners and various stakeholders, the festival organizes special projects. Take for instance the education project (in which we aim for 3000 primary school students to take part), which has been part of every edition for seven years now. Next to that, we organize special evenings and experiences for residents, senior citizens and other vulnerable groups.

In 2023 is iedereen weer van harte welkom. Een weekend lang kunnen zij zich toerist wanen in eigen stad. Ze kunnen overnachten in één van de 40 meest bijzondere hotels van Amsterdam en kunnen naar tientallen bijzondere hotelfeestjes. Op 14 en 15 januari kunnen Amsterdammers eindelijk weer op reis in hun eigen stad tijdens de Mastercard Hotelnacht.

Toerist in eigen stad
Zo’n 40 tophotels openen hun deuren tijdens de Hotelnacht. Voor een speciale prijs overnachten Amsterdammers in bekende hotels als Pulitzer, Conservatorium of in nieuwkomers als BOAT&CO of Yotel. Ook organiseren deze hotels het hele weekend speciale creatieve en culinaire evenementen.

Hotelfeestjes
Veel van de deelnemende hotels bieden speciale Hotelnacht-diners aan en organiseren iets bijzonders in hun hotelbar. Van een cocktailparty tot een masterclass roomsprays maken, van een cocktail-workshop tot een exclusief suite-feestje. Dit jaar is het overkoepelende thema van Hotelnacht 'muziek'. Dat betekent dat er flink gedanst kan worden op verschillende kleine en grote muziekfeestjes. Van Asian Karaoke tot een Silent Disco, van een Champagne Jazz Club tot Circusfeest in de Koepelkerk en een After in de hoogste hotelbar van de stad. 

Brunchen
Ook op zondag gaat het feestprogramma door. Zo organiseren veel hotels een speciale zondagsbrunch en ook zijn er verschillende muziekfeestjes.
