Want de tijden van toen zijn totaal anders dan de tijden van nu. Toch? Of niet? Singer-songwriter Maame Joses laat zien en horen hoe actueel haar idool nog steeds is. Hoe uitgesproken. En hoe briljant. Maame zingt Nina’s songs, vertelt over haar bewogen leven en volgt haar drijfveren. Haar strijd tegen racisme. Haar battle voor burgerrechten. Ain’t Got No, I Got Life. En My Baby Just Cares For Me. En meer. Veel meer. Maame zingt al ruim 22 jaar in binnen- en buitenland. Is gelauwerd en geprezen. En fan van Nina. En wij van haar.

Step inside a Polish Christmas Eve on a winter Sunday evening.

Polish Grzaniec (The traditional Polish winter drink) will be ready and traditional Polish Christmas Eve dishes will be made in the kitchen. Listen to a live performance of a jazz quartet led by Anka Koziel, who will be singing Polish Christmas Carols.

In Poland, Christmas is perhaps the most important celebration of the year. But why 12 courses in the Polish Christmas menu and why is there straw under the tablecloth? And do you know what Poles do with a kilo of poppy seeds? Curious about these customs and traditions? Join us on Sunday evening 15th of December. If you are looking for Christmas gifts, there will be an excellent selection of Polish products. There is also a mini market with an excellent selection of Polish products, to find yourself some special Christmas gifts.

La de la Parra voert een golf van feminine talenten aan. En op. Een posse vol feministische fanaten. In de intieme setting van KomedieLAB, voorbereidend op Femilicious XL. Ook vanavond presenteert Nina een hyperbont palet waar de spetters van afspatten. Spoken word en beeldende kunst. Vaginale borduursels en stand-up. Een multidisciplinaire bende is het. Na het succes van eerder werk als A Seat At The Table (★★★★★) en Saman Amini’s Integratieplan (★★★★★) betovert veelgeprezen cabaretier en muzikant Saman Amini het publiek opnieuw met Onaantastbaar, zijn tweede cabaretvoorstelling. Een voorstelling waarin cabaret en verhaal moeiteloos samensmelten met Nederlandstalige songs van zijn langverwachte album.

In deze meeslepende en humoristische voorstelling deelt Saman het verhaal over hoe hij vrienden werd met zijn trauma’s. Jarenlang worstelde hij met verslavingen waarbij hij niet alleen zichzelf maar ook zijn dierbaren verwaarloosde. Op het dieptepunt besloot hij de confrontatie met zijn demonen aan te gaan. Deze strijd leverde hilarische anekdotes op, maar ook scherpe inzichten over armoede, geweld en opvoeding. Ondersteund door veelzijdig muzikant Martin Verheesen verweeft Saman in Onaantastbaar rauwe en kwetsbare songs uit diverse muziekgenres, van conscious hiphop tot aan pop.

Het gelijknamige album is vanaf november 2024 op alle bekende streamingplatforms te beluisteren.

Black Sheep Can Fly opereert als productiehuis op het gebied van film, muziek en theater. Met een grote diversiteit aan projecten drukt Black Sheep Can Fly op pijnpunten in de maatschappij en laat hiermee zien dat de waarheid net zo complex is als de mens.

KomedieLab: Saman Amini werkvoorstelling

Je kent het wel. Van school, vroeger. Dit gaat allemaal van jullie eigen tijd af. In de klas, bij de meester. Maar anno nu geldt het zo’n beetje overal. Voor bijna alles in de maatschappij. Alles gaat van onze tijd af. En dus neemt meester én meesterverteller Kees van Amstel je mee naar het klaslokaal. En naar ver daarbuiten. Heel ver daarbuiten. Met prachtige verhalen. Hilarische anekdotes. En met grappen. Heel veel grappen. ‘Kees van Amstel,’ schreef de Volkskrant, ‘is een rasverteller die van iedere situatie wel iets komisch weet te maken.’ En Theaterkrant zag ‘een komiek van de bovenste plank die vol gas geeft en zijn zaal laat schudden van het lachen.’ Zo zien wij ze graag. Dus kom! De meester vertelt!

KomedieLab: Kees van Amstel try-out

The range of different projects in this exhibition means you’re assured of finding new perspectives.

In Future Botanica, you can get your virtual hands dirty as a futuristic gardener: with an augmented reality app you design new plant species to shape your own vision of the future of nature and technology. Groundbreaking audio project Drift also gives an alternate glimpse of the future: this generative audio experience paints a picture of how the climate crisis and rising sea levels will present us with a sink-or-swim moment – or have we already reached that point? Sincerely, Victor Pike (also presented in a full-dome version at DocLab at the Planetarium) also uses AI-generated material. But, in this case, to reconstruct fragmented memories from the past. In contrast, there’s nothing artificial to be seen in Lisa Schamlé’s live performance Me, a Depiction. As a living component of her own installation, she explores our ideal of beauty and seeks confrontation with her own body—and with the spectators.

Synopsis:
It’s 2024, or—time doesn’t actually matter so much—2529: an octopus as narrator, old dikes that once formed the contours of land. In an generative audio experience, a podcast that is not a podcast, Drift connects rising sea levels and the climate crisis to the rise of AI. This story world combines the imaginary with factual sources, such as the IPCC climate report and real-time weather forecasts by the Dutch meteorological institute. In a distant future, society has learned hard lessons from environmental neglect. Due to pollution and rising sea levels, the Netherlands, such as it once was, no longer exists. The waters have now been injected with AI. A techno-liquid environment serves as a living repository of knowledge, merging ancient wisdom with futuristic insights. The pace and rhythm of the story are synchronized with the lunar phases and the tides, moving away from the rigid mechanical clock that dictates human life, and back to the way Mother Earth intended. Technology and nature combine to create a new reality that the listener can drift through.

2. Future Botanica

Synopsis:
The idea that nature and technology are incompatible is outdated. Nature is full of cultivated elements introduced to serve the needs of human beings. The nature around us is subjected to -isms such as anthropocentrism, colonialism and capitalism. Add to this new technological systems such as AI and robotics, from which autonomous entities emerge that will probably also merge with nature, and an infinite number of possible future scenarios unfold. These speculations are the subject of the innovative augmented reality app Future Botanica. The app allows the user to design ecosystems with new nature using an AI. These virtual ecosystems are then planted in existing physical nature: you superimpose digital designs—one of the proposed scenarios or one you make yourself—on existing landscapes. By making your imaginings visible, you can safely explore ideas, expectations, fears and desires regarding the future of the natural environment. Winner of the Film Fund DocLab Interactive Grant 2024.

3. Me, a Depiction
Lisa Schamlé | Netherlands | 2024 | 30 min

Synopsis:
In an intimate space it can feel slightly uncomfortable, voyeuristic even, to watch Lisa Schamlé draped as a living part of her own performance/installation on a mirrored object. In the mirror, Schamlé looks not only at herself, but also back at you, seeking contact with her audience in order to involve it actively in the process taking place. In this third and final part of her trilogy on sexuality, Schamlé reclaims the autonomy of her body from where it has been lost: in the public domain, that abstract area where the female body is always exposed to the objectifying and normative gaze of the other. A gaze that has an absurd degree of power over the way women see themselves, and through which they often judge themselves, and each other, mercilessly. Schamlé strives to escape the suffocating dictate of an idealized body image. This raises the question whether in art the gaze can become inquiring rather than judgmental. Winner of the Film Fund DocLab Interactive Grant 2024.

4. Sincerely, Victor Pike

Synopsis:
A poor memory leads Gregor Petrikovič to make audio recordings of conversations with loved ones, friends and acquaintances. Since 2016, he has been building an archive of anecdotes and recollections. With AI-generated visuals, Sincerely, Victor Pike, winner of the SOLO AI Award 2024, combines these faceless voices in a patchwork to produce a collective memory around the semi-fictional figure Victor Pike. The dreamlike, nostalgically grainy quality of the images raises questions about authenticity and the nature of memory. The images are clearly not real; the shapes and settings are recognizable, but full of anomalous and alienating detail. Cars fly through the air, bodies merge. At the same time, this may actually be true to the nature of memories, which lie on the boundary between the real and the surreal. This not only questions the relationship between technology and memory, but also challenges the notion of AI as an instrument detached from humans, precisely because it is used as a means to portray something as subjective as memories.

NINA'S FEMILICIOUS POSSE

‘Korthals behoort tot de absolute cabarettop,’ schreef de pers na haar vorige show. En: ‘Een megatalent.’ Waarna ze, als kleinkunstklap op de vuurpijl, ook nog eens de Poelifinario won. Jubel alom. Cabaret twee punt nul, klonk het. Dan is het wel af, zou je zeggen. Maar niets is minder waar. Louise heeft juist een voorliefde voor wat ónaf is. Beter dan als geheel gedijt Korthals in stukken. En dat geldt volgens haar ook steeds meer voor de wereld. In deze nieuwe show probeert ze te reïntegreren met zichzelf en met haar omgeving. Om te kijken of er nog wat te redden valt. En te zien wat voor moois er voortkomt uit bevlogen chaos. Wij weten het al. Nóg meer prachtige liedjes. Nóg meer imponerend spel. En nóg meer jubel.

As part of the ME/YOU, US/THEM exhibition opening, a visual artist and writer Efrat Zehavi will shape a plasticine portrait of the guests while engaging in a conversation with them. A well-known Passportraits series reflects the mix of identities that we encounter on the streets every day.

Visual artist and writer Efrat Zehavi is known for the plasticine portraits she models on the spot. Her themes are origin, family, and migration. Having moved to Rotterdam from Haifa in 2001, she became fascinated by the facial variations within the 170 different nationalities surrounding her. This led her to develop Passportraits, an ongoing traveling performance.

Efrat Zehavi: ‘Behind each face, there is a life story. I want to find out: where are you from? Who are you? Where are you going? For me, asking questions is the best way to counter prejudice. To avoid fearing each other. The portraits are also about overcoming my fear of others.’

On June 27, we organise an exploratory talk, where Farid Tabarki will go in conversation with Koert Debeuf (professor of Middle East Studies, author of the book ‘Tribalization: Why War is Coming’) and Naeeda Aurangzeb (journalist, author of the book ‘365 dagen Nederlander’). They will explore the (historical) need for a clash of ideas partly powered by a multitude of identities.

How successful are we in this day and age in creating the right amount of clashes? And what is needed to make these a two-way street instead of a zero-sum game?
