Out­sider­land pre­sen­teert een nieuwe show met werk van Ayse So­muncu, ‘Schilderkunst met Ay­se’, gecureerd door Bas Kosters! Het is een show vol pop­pen met ju­rken vol snoep­jes, en enge mon­sters die ook lief zijn! De kunst­werken vor­men samen een wereld die een gevoel oproept van een magisch woud met goede en slechte geesten, en met fig­uren die soms on­der wa­ter of in de lucht lijken te leven. Ook haar zelf­portret­ten laten zien dat ni­ets sta­tisch is en alles alles kan zijn. Ayse So­muncu is een kun­ste­naar die uit­bundig, kleur­rijk, speels en fig­u­ratief werk maakt. ‘Mijn leven is teke­nen,’ zegt So­muncu. Op haar werk­plaats op het Ate­lier Bi­j­zon­der Am­s­ter­dams No­ord werkt Ayse So­muncu een paar da­gen in de week aan haar schilder­i­jen. Ze werkt daar­naast aan keramis­che- en tex­tiel­stukken. Op­val­lend is hoe mee­do­gen­loos ze naar zichzelf is in haar zelf­portret­ten. Ze hoeft er niet knap in uit te komen, of lelijk. Aan het per­fecte plaatje van zichzelf con­strueren doet Ayse So­muncu nadrukke­lijk niet mee. ENG­LISH: Out­sider­land pre­sents a new show with work by Ayse So­muncu, ‘Paint­ing with Ay­se’, cu­rated by Bas Kosters! It is a show full of dolls with dresses full of sweets, and scary mon­sters that are also sweet! The art­works to­gether form a world that evokes a feel­ing of a mag­i­cal for­est with good and bad spir­its, and with fig­ures that some­times seem to live un­der wa­ter or in the air. Her self-por­traits also show that noth­ing is sta­tic and any­thing can be any­thing. Ayse So­muncu is an artist who cre­ates ex­u­ber­ant, col­or­ful, play­ful and fig­u­ra­tive work. ‘My life is draw­ing,’ says So­muncu. At her work­shop at Ate­lier Bi­j­zon­der Am­s­ter­dams No­ord, Ayse So­muncu works on her paint­ings a few days a week. She also works on ce­ramic and tex­tile pieces. It is strik­ing how ruth­less she is to­wards her­self in her self-por­traits. She does­n’t need to come out hand­some in them, or ugly. Ayse So­muncu em­phat­i­cally does not par­tic­i­pate in con­struct­ing the per­fect pic­ture of her­self. Outsiderland is the first art space in the Netherlands that will bring the world of who are now still “outsider artists” and “insider artists” together. The space stimulates collaborations between the most talented “outsider” artists, who are up till this day not allowed to participate in the official art circuit, and insider artists who also like to think out of the box. -- (Text and image)
