Water is the base of nearly everything in live: our health, nature, farming, and recreation. The availability of enough clean water looks to be obvious but isn’t anymore. Climate change in the Netherlands leads to droughts and floods. As citizens we can contribute solutions.

In this talk, Mado Ruijs will give a brief presentation will be given about the challenges of water management in our surroundings in Brabant. Followed by an open-table discussion led by moderators, with a focus on water, sustainability, nature and impact.

As a renowned Dutch Designer, Studio Tijs Guilty is now setting up a design brand in North Carolina. Questions raised for this: How do we decide what Dutch Design is? And how does it fit within the local challenges the city of High Point faces?

Tijs Gilde‘s work derives from material researches that have impulsive and intuitive starting points. The researches show a unique fascination for structures, patterns and colour whilst exploring new possibilities of producing. Having a background in trend forecasting and strategy, Tijs always aims to tap into certain needs or trends in existing and future markets.

Building Dialogue opens a playful space for participatory discussions and the exchange of different perspectives on contemporary ecological and social challenges. 

At Dutch Design Week ’22, the game was played at Plan-B and activated discussions around future scenarios for two days. In current times of crises, Building Dialogue  highlights the importance of collective reimagining and reshaping of the future.

Collective Speculation with Building Dialogue

Testing over 40000 biological specimen has proven the Superformula to be a superior model for the natural sciences. The shapes described by this Superformula, a.k.a. Gielis Transformations, are found everywhere: in nature from the very small to the very large. This invention that was invented 25 years ago is used all over the world, even in fields like economy. Applications emerge in many different technologies, from lasers to nanotechnology.

Johan has co-founded Genicap Beheer BV to develop applications using the Gielis formula, and the Antenna Company focusing on novel antenna technologies. During this talk, Johan will elaborate on how the history of the living world can be summarized as the elaboration of ever more perfect eyes within a cosmos in which there is always more to be seen.

The rapid development of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines has demonstrated the tremendous potential of nucleic acid therapeutics. In this talk, Roy van der Meel will highlight how nanotechnology is enabling next generation RNA therapeutics for therapeutic gene silencing, expression, and editing.

Roy is appointed Assistant Professor at the TU/e’s Biomedical Engineering department where he heads the Precision Medicine group under direction of professor Willem Mulder. His research focuses on establishing platform nanotechnology for delivering nucleic acids to specific immune cells and therapeutically regulating the immune response in a highly precise manner.

3D printing is a set of techniques that have so far revolutionized the manufacturing of unique or small series of objects, and the fast link between computer design and physical object have aided prototyping work in many industries. But what if we told you that the potential of 3D printing reaches further? A lot further!
Using newly designed materials, 4D printing  has been introduced. Objects printed in “four dimensions” show a well-defined change after printing—this can be shape, color, or another property, with the promise of this behavior being used to aid in solving societal challenges.

During this talk, Jeroen Sol, a material scientist recently graduated with a PhD from TU/e, will tell the story of developing a “4D printed” object and what the future holds for this new technique.

Sodalime makes high tech materials to create unique and mesmerizing art objects. What possibilities does Dichroic glass offer? And how do you position a business like this? 

At the end of 2021, Ruud Groeneveld en Carissa ten Tije founded Sodalime to create design/art objects no one has ever seen before. Now they exhibit and sell these in London, Eindhoven, Paris and Milan. This evening, Ruud will tell us about this journey.

Creating Dichroic Art Objects

Not all solar models are made equal: low carbon content, circularity, elimination of PFAS and absence of forced labor supply chains are key to a sustainable solar module. Solarge has developed solar modules that fulfill all of the above. On top of that, they are very light and therefore can be used also for 50% of commercial roofs that cannot carry conventional solar modules made with glass and aluminium. 

Gerard de Leede is Chief Technology officer and co-founder of Solarge and is Professor of Practice for Smart Energy at TU/e.
