In collaboration with STUK and the Brakke Grond, FIBER presents Sound Art | Neighbouring Frequencies. An afternoon showcasing the rich development and presentation of sound art filled with sound art performances and installations.

Programme:
- Phantom Limb: A project exploring the enigmatic and poetic relationship between a human being and a black box that is our interior by transforming a medical ultrasound machine into an instrument. The medical machine is used to illuminate the inside of the body, and expand the space of the artistic act into the organs, under the skin.

- Maria Komarova: Krɑjïnɑ is an alluvial gathering of bark, cork, rubber, wires, roots, plastic, electret capsules, motors, batteries, stones, speakers and integrated circuits. A place where things become forces, and sounds become tales. Where artifacts dance with landforms and offer hints without posing riddles. Being joint along the seams of our categories, they resonate, shake, feedback and tremble, altering the polarity of assigned meanings.

- Suzan Peeters: An experimental accordionist who expands the acoustic sound spectrum of the accordion by using objects, transducers and live electronics. At the heart of her sonic exploration lies a massage board, which makes her body and the instrument vibrate and oscillate. Sound and movement are closely connected as the former follows the movement of the bellows. Through the integration of transducers and live electronics, Peeters transforms her accordion into a dynamic speaker. The transducer offers an extra dimension to the instrument, creating texture and a subtle amplification to the acoustic sound.

- Aernoudt Jacobs: Presents the Dutch premiere of “Akoetrope”. A unique and self-developed rotating sound machine, which is both an intuitive device and scientific strategy for understanding the persistence of sound cognition. The device is freely inspired from the Phénakisticope/Zoetrope devices that were invented around 1833 that use the phenomenon of iconic memory (or persistence of vision) to create a moving image in the human brain.

- Myra-Ida van der Veen: Closing the ninth edition of our festival is Myra-Ida van der Veen with her delicate and breath-centred performance Second Breath. Settle yourself into darkness to be welcomed by enlightening voices and vibrations. Second Breath is a performance that delves into the physicality of sound as it moves through the primal essence of the voice: the breath.

On Saturday June 1 FIBER will take over Garage Noord for an evening of deep, mind-expanding electronic and dancefloor vibes. We present a lineup of club artists at Garage Noord, consisting of contemporary blends of different electronic music styles from different parts of the world.

Poly Chain is a distinctive voice in today's landscape of electro-infused electronic music and Kyiv’s club scene. She developed her fierce, yet spacious and hypnotic, style in the music scene in the Ukrainian capital, where different styles and worlds meet. Behind the decks Poly Chain skillfully crafts sets which  weave together diverse influences from electro and techno to IDM and experimental ambient sounds.

Palestinian DJ and producer Oldyungmayn's multifaceted identity is layered through both his productions and performances, influencing an exhilarating musical lexicon of 90's era rave, sharpened sound design, and a wide spectrum of music from fellow Middle Eastern producers. Blending diverse influences, from techno mutations to Arabic musical traditions, his genre-defying mixes and sets act as outlets for emotional expression and dialogue.

Hard hitting, rhythmical and genre-traversing, Rama is a DJ and multidisciplinary artist who bridges sonic worlds. Her sets are adventurous journeys through various sorts of future-focused club music, mutated UK bass, dubstep, rap, Brazilian funk, and percussion-influenced music with Arabic roots — all with a certain industrial edge, technically sharpened to move the body.

Named after the Kurdish tale of a half snake half woman with an uncompromising attitude, Rotterdam-based DJ Shahmaran fearlessly combines broken beats, deconstructed club, and bass music. By frequenting record bins while scavenging online platforms for new producers, their digging is an ode to the duality — and blurring — of the traditional and experimental in electronic music.

Beatrice M. rides the subsonic waves of the dubby and hypnotic spectrum of electronic music. Hailing from the French club scene, they navigate the low-end frequencies of dubstep, bass and half-step, immersive techno.

With a style spun more from texture and mood than limited to any specific tempo or genre, k means likes to throw you in at the deep end. They have a knack for bringing together the trippy, strange, intense, and wondrous together in unexpected ways.

Setting the tone for the club night is DJ Leoni, who will pull you into a spiral of deep and hypnotic electronics. Whether it’s techno, drum ‘n’ bass or dubstep, DJ Leoni skillfully navigates her way through. At the heart of all this lies a deep understanding of the power of rhythm and groove. As an OOST resident from the start, DJ Leoni developed a distinctive sound, which sets her apart as a one-of-a-kind artist. The Amsterdam-based DJ also has a bi-monthly radio show at Radio Radio and is a familiar face at Garage Noord.

FIBER will close it’s 10-year anniversary edition with a finale at BIMHUIS featuring a double concert by Christina Vantzou with John Also Bennett and Fennesz. The programme presents musicians whose performances evoke the feeling of journeying through vivid sonic landscapes. From hushed and minimal field recordings blended with acoustic instruments, to immersive glitch guitar soundscapes that feel both organic and technological.

Christina Vantzou is a nomadic composer who explores the manipulation of time perception, atmospheres, and harmonies through electronics and acoustic instruments. Her work resembles a sonic diary, where elements from various worlds and environments converge to form an entirely new reality. Field recordings of water, wind, and other natural elements are interwoven with piano, mysterious vocals, modular synths, and flute. For her most recent releases, Vantzou literally worked in the heart of nature, allowing her creative process to be guided by the materiality and rhythms of the natural world. The compositions slowly come together through a direct interaction between the external and internal realms.

Vantzou has released five solo albums, along with several collaborative projects with American composer and multi-instrumentalist John Also Bennett. Their live concerts are experienced as temporary spaces that invite contemplative listening through drifting states, emerging memories, and meditative slowness. Bennett works with various flutes, microtonal synthesis, and field recordings. He, too, often draws inspiration from travel and the resonance of physical spaces.

After his last solo performance at BIMHUIS in 2014, influential Austrian guitarist, composer, and electronic musician Christian Fennesz returns to the venue.

Fennesz is a pioneer and vital voice in the contemporary evolution of electronic music and ambient. By digitally transforming and processing his guitar sound, he has created a distinctive sonic identity that’s difficult to mistake for anyone else. Expansive, densely layered soundscapes wash over the listener like waves, evoking strong cinematic sensations—of rainforests, vast mountain ranges, or atmospheric flows. Emotionally charged and touched by nature—in some moments even romantic—Fennesz’s music balances between euphoria and melancholy.

He gained international recognition with his third milestone album Endless Summer (2001), followed by Venice (2014), in which ambient-rich textures were combined with elements of pop music. After several releases, Agora (2019) delivered a subtle and highly detailed listening experience of drawn-out sonic forces. At BIMHUIS, Fennesz will perform his latest solo album Mosaic (2024), shaped by a variety of influences: from rock structures and 1980s African pop songs to unusual time signatures. The title reflects an ancient method of image construction—where each new element forms unexpected and interrelated connections with its surroundings. It’s an album where the raw character of the guitar once again takes center stage.

For a second time, the Sound Art Sunday will give wide exposure to sound art performances by artists from the Netherlands and Belgium. Expect a series of short performances, and one longer hybrid performance, at the intersection of sound, installation art, instrument design, dance and theatre in different rooms of de Brakke Grond.

For our second club night, FIBER joins forces with Dusty Cabinets; a club programme focused on all things low-frequencies, serving mutant variations of dub-infused electronics. Towards the end of the night there will be a vortex of spiraling rave rhythms to seduce you into. Of course, not without the mighty power of the Krackfree Soundsystem – a custom self-build soundsystem ready to serve you deep musical experiences.

Amsterdam selector Elina Tapio opens the evening, followed by the ophélie who has a strong affinity for low frequencies, intricate percussions and bass-heavy music in all its forms. 2K88 shares his compelling live set with avant garde soundscapes, through alternative rap, to futurist bass lines and heavy alt-pop melodies. Closing the night is the enigmatic duo Public Transportation //GTH – a special sonic project by Amsterdam-based Mick van Dijk (aka cccore) and Vanja Rakic. They melt down 80’s esoteric drone, noise and industrial with repetitive grind of freetekno, ricocheting between the walls of mayhem. What do you want more?

The third concert night with the title Liminal Being, taking place at the Brakke Grond, is dedicated to the fusion of natural and synthetic spaces, bodies and the audiovisual aesthetics this produces. Two performances by Nexcyia (Live) and LOREM (Live AV) take you on an immersive journey that leads through themes of otherness, exploring lived or synthetic identity while questioning what makes or defines our human limits. 

Themes of otherness and belonging are at the forefront of Nexcyia’s debut LP, ‘Endless Path of Memory’. Rejecting conventional song structures and the constraints of the tempo grid, the London-based ambient musician and sound artist crafts an atmospheric exploration of the boundaries between reality and illusion, driven by spontaneity rather than a predetermined destination.

LOREM is the music-driven multidisciplinary practice of Italian musician, visual artist, and independent researcher Francesco D’Abbraccio. ‘Time Coils’ is the enigmatic artist’s latest album: a hypercollage of audio materials in which eras of corrupted memories coalesce into diverse cultural influences and reimagined connections that are refracted through ongoing processes of resampling and recomposition.

Can low frequency sounds create feelings of relaxation and stress reduction? Is an intense sonic experience of vibrations soothing to some, where others might experience discomfort? To enhance the festival theme of Outer/Body, we invite you to step into B.A.S. during all festival days. The artist Stefanie Egedy created the installation BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.) 6.0: TRIPLE R-45 for you to experience the possible interactions between sub-bass, infrasound, bodies, and subwoofers. B.A.S. is a travelling and transforming series of site-specific sound installations and concerts composed of subwoofer arrangements and low frequency sound (LFS).

Stefanie Egedy investigates sound as a composer of conceptual pieces, commissioned works, and experimental electronic music. Focused on researching possibilities with low frequency sound, bodies, and subwoofers, her work stems from installations to live performances as sonic propositions. She runs the label COISAS QUE MATAM (THINGS THAT KILL), researches light-sound relations with Camille Laurent, and has worked with Monom Center for Spatial Sound, Alexis Blake and Chris Salter. Her work was presented at festivals and institutes such as CTM Festival, Berghain, Tresor, Nextones Festival, and The High Line.

It is with regret that we have to announce that BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.) has to leave the Schietbaan today. This cancels tonight's performance and all time slots on Wednesday (29/5) and Thursday (30/5), as well as the time slots on Friday before 19:00. Everyone who bought a ticket for the live or installation session has received an email about this.

At the same time, we are happy to announce that BODIES AND SUBWOOFER can be experienced from Friday till Sunday at the former Slotervaart hospital. Together with Stefanie Egedy and Care Design Lab we are installing the work on the 8th floor, which is still fully empty. The hospital environment fits our theme Outer/Body and we are glad to have found this location within the last 24h.
