At just 19-years-old, Natalie Jane has the kind of powerhouse voice that makes the most intimate emotions feel larger-than-life. As shown on past hits like “AVA”—one of her first singles since signing with 10K Projects/Capitol Records—the New Jersey-raised, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter matches her massive vocal talents with soulful sensitivity and unapologetic attitude, a dynamic she’s embodied since self-releasing her own music in high school. That’s particularly true of “I’m Good,” her defiant new collaboration with fellow rising star charlieonafriday, which is shaping up to be a summer smash.

Growing up in Woodcliff Lake, Natalie Jane first discovered the phenomenal strength of her voice as a little girl, thanks in large part to the encouragement of her family including an aunt who’s an opera singer. Along with singing in musicals and learning to play piano, she started writing her own songs at the young age of eight. Naming big-voiced singers like Bishop Briggs and Adele among her top inspirations, she later began heading into New York City to work with a producer who helped to sharpen her hypnotic approach to pop music.

“All throughout high school I’d go into the city after school and spend countless hours in sessions,” she recalls. In 2021, Natalie Jane delivered her debut single “Love is the Devil”—a slow-burning and emotionally potent track written completely on her own. Within the next few months she made waves with independent releases like “Red Flag” and “Kind of Love,” and soon found herself balancing her school work with the demands of a fast-burgeoning music career.

“I remember sitting in music-theory class the day I found out I got my first editorial playlist,” she says. “My teacher was frustrated with me and said, ‘Natalie, could you please focus?’ and I was like, ‘I really can’t.’” At the start of 2022, Natalie Jane made her first trip to L.A. as her following continued to grow exponentially. Although she gained acceptance to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, she ultimately decided to pursue her musical ambitions—a choice that paid off when she inked her deal with 10K Projects/Capitol Records in July.

That same month, she made her major-label debut with “Mentally Cheating,” a gorgeously raw track quickly featured on highly coveted playlists like Spotify’s Pop Sauce. Almost immediately after moving to L.A. in September, Natalie Jane released her follow-up single “Seven” (another heavily playlisted hit) and in November returned with “AVA”—an unstoppably magnetic track that debuted on the official single charts in four countries across the globe, in addition to landing on seven flagship playlists and earning her four playlist covers.

“It’s a song about being in a relationship and knowing your partner’s talking to someone he shouldn’t be talking to,” explains Natalie Jane, who created “AVA” with boundary-pushing producers like Pink Slip (FLETCHER, Royal & the Serpent) and Doc Daniel (Bankrol Hayden, Chloe Lilac). “In general I want my music to be something for people to put on in the car when they’re feeling upset, and need some kind of outlet to scream along to. I want every song to be a therapy session.”

On songs like “AVA,” Natalie Jane shares her singular perspective on the emotional climate of the modern world while fearlessly venting her thoughts and desires. On “I’m Good,” her latest single and rising hit, she delivers an empowering anthem about moving on from a breakup with casual defiance. The inclusion of charlieonafriday is also representative of her collaborative approach to music. As part of her fierce commitment to fully realizing her vision, she’s made a point of staying hands-on in all aspects of her artistry, including collaborating with her friends to dream up the videos for tracks like “Crazy.”

Chelsea Wolfe’s latest album, She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, is a rebirth in process. It’s about how such a moment connects to our past, our present, and our future. It’s a powerfully cathartic statement about cutting ties, as well as an important reminder that healing is cyclical and circular, and not a simple linear process. As Wolfe explains, “It’s a record about the past self reaching out to the present self reaching out to the future self to summon change, growth, and guidance. It’s a story of setting yourself free from situations and patterns that are holding you back, in order to become self-empowered. It’s an invitation to step into your authenticity.” On She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, there are references to shedding exoskeletons, to excommunication, and to permanent fissures. The liminal, the in-between, and the unseen are recurring characters. As Wolfe puts it, “like the dark moon, that void space can feel unpredictable and looming, but it also holds so much potential, mystery, and excitement.” Dense and minimal, raw and opulent, intimate and expansive, the production also breaks apart then rebuilds—samples of the band are cut and pasted back together, heavy guitars dissolve into trip-hop breaks; the vocal delivery is both hushed and soaring. As Wolfe sings in the blistering opener, “Whispers In The Echo Chamber,” she’s “twisting the old self into poetry.” (The same track finds her “bathing in the blood of who [she] used to be.”) There’s an intimate, ASMR-like quality to the vocals on this album, delicate and detailed. Nothing feels straightforward, left to chance, or as expected. Wolfe said of She Reaches Out: “This album demanded to be lived.” Throughout, these vocals hold specific keys to meaning, and feel sculptural. The initial songwriting was kept to a core of longtime collaborators, as Wolfe worked closely with multi-instrumentalist Ben Chisholm, along with drummer Jess Gowrie and guitarist Bryan Tulao. The songs were written and workshopped remotely from the spring of 2020 through the end of 2021 by Wolfe and these collaborators. In early 2022, she brought the work she had collected to producer and TV On The Radio co-founder Dave Sitek, who worked with the band to deconstruct the compositions, pushing the songs into uncharted waters where they were then transformed and reborn. The pieces found their final focus at the mixing console of Shawn Everett (Slowdive, SZA, Alvvays, the Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs); Everett and Wolfe worked to extract the fine details from the vocals, blending them into the lush sonic production world. Everett mixed in a sense of urgency and excitement, while still maintaining the delicate sections of its production. This leap into the unknown shouldn’t be surprising: Wolfe has never been afraid to experiment, traverse genre, or invent her own hybrids. If you return to her 2010 debut, The Grime and the Glow, amongst the room-tone atmospherics, punk drums, dark melody, and Wolfe’s commanding voice you can already see the prototypical skeleton, a visionary scratchpad, for what would follow. An early approach to She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She’s pulsing electronics and break beats are there in 2013’s Pain Is Beauty. 2015’s Abyss established a space between folk and industrial and noise rock and metal. 2017’s Hiss Spun burrowed deeper into heaviness. Wolfe returned to her earlier, folkier beginnings on 2019’s Birth of Violence, which was recorded at home in Northern California, and links back to 2012’s acoustic collection of songs, Unknown Rooms. Opener “Whispers in the Echo Chamber,” ties together a number of elements Wolfe has explored in the past, rolling in dynamic waves between minimal synth electronic and heavy, full-band moments, and refracted through a hall of mirrors. The explosive “House of Self-Undoing,” a song about Wolfe getting sober after the touring for her last album concluded, feels like electronica meets post-hardcore. Wolfe explains, “When you become sober after years of numbing out, you feel, deeply: the moments of joy are euphoric, and the moments of pain are more visceral. But it’s like a call to adventure, facing life fully present is exciting when you’ve spent half your life only half-present.” Wolfe describes the song as an underworld journey – this journey takes many forms. The slow-burn “Everything Turns Blue” is an anthem about “finding yourself again after a long era of being part of something toxic,” she says. ”Making a split with someone after 10 years, 20 years, 30 years—there’s going to be some high highs and low lows as you begin to process it all.” The production here is deep, smoky, cavernous, and glitchy. Wolfe’s voice is raw, honest, and carries a weight with it, the feeling of burnout and also healing. “I’ve been living without you here/ and it’s alright/ I’d been looking for a way out a long time/ I’ve been living without you here and I can fight/ I’ve been living softly my whole life,” she sings. On this track, Wolfe asks another question central to She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She: “What do I have to do to heal you out of me?” Closer “Dusk,” which opens smoky and sensual and ends as a towering psychedelic guitar shredder, sees an empire burning and dissipating, and a dusk before a new dawn. It’s a sentiment echoed throughout She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She. On “Tunnel Lights,” a song that has a late-nite Twin Peaks feel until it cracks open into a miasmic swirl of analog and electric waves, is about, as Wolfe describes, “actually living instead of just ‘getting by,’ about waking up to the fact that you’ve been languishing in the dark and it’s time to start taking steps towards the lights that’ll guide you out of the tunnel-cave.”

At its core, She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She is realizing the way forward is through, contemplating what must be cut and left behind, while also figuring out what lies ahead and what there is to discover once you get there. Wolfe guides us on that quest, asking us these questions as she asks herself the same. As the title of the album hints, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She is a reminder to look within, to remember that all the power you need resides there. Reach out to the selves, reach out to one other. Reach to the ancient and to the end of all things, to remember that the only time we truly have is now.

Somebody’s Child’s self-titled debut album, released on 3rd February 2023, was the culmination of years of work. Cian Godfrey had started the project in his native Dublin in 2018 with a series of infectious indie-pop singles that garnered attention both at home in Ireland and across the water in the UK.

Early support slots with the likes of Primal Scream and Kaiser Chiefs as well as an appearance on The Late Late Show helped to quickly bring SC to the public’s consciousness – and before too long US indie label Frenchkiss Records (The Drums, Passion Pit) came knocking.

The LP was produced by Mikko Gordon (Arcade Fire, The Smile) at East London’s Hackney Road Studios, and featured a handful of fan favourites alongside newly-penned material. Upon its release, it garnered positive reviews from the likes of CLASH, The Irish Times and Hot Press amongst others – notable radio support came from RTE 2FM, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 Music and NPO 3FM in the Netherlands.

The band were invited to perform a live session at the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios and every date on the February 2023 tour of the UK (from Southampton to Glasgow) was a complete sell out – that was before a triumphant sold-out homecoming show at Dublin’s Academy venue. Early 2023 also saw the band showcase at Eurosonic in Groningen and take their first steps in the USA with two well-received performances at SXSW in Austin. Notable appearances at Best Kept Secret, Truck Festival, Boardmasters and Reading & Leeds followed that summer.

There’s a feeling though that all this is just the beginning – the next few years are set to be exciting ones for Somebody’s Child.

London clubland in the 1970s was a fairly dismal place. It compared very unfavourably with New York and many european cities and the concept of ‘clubbing’ as we understand the term today simply did not exist.

To that end a group of innovative characters got together and took over the site that was a run down old roller disco called Global Village and in December 1979 Heaven opened its doors for the first time. It was timed perfectly. Six months earlier Mrs Thatcher had been elected and an era began that saw unemployment rise to levels last seen in the 1930s. The sense of decay and gloom was palpable. The ‘Swinging London’ of the 1960s a distant memory. London needed a splash of colour & flamboyance to counter balance the otherwise grey monochrome that was the reality of the british capital.
