For this edition of Fight the Power: Films of Resistance, we’re screening Burning Days (Kurak Günler, 2022), a Turkish political thriller directed by Emin Alper. The protagonist, Emre, is an idealistic young prosecutor assigned to Yanıklar, a small, drought-stricken town in Turkey. As he investigates a case involving the town’s folk, he faces corruption, intimidation, and growing political tension. The film reflects on authoritarianism and social decay, mirroring the political climate in Turkey under its current regime.

Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul and the announced presidential candidate against Erdoğan, was arrested on March 23rd following his diploma’s rescission through a non-transparent “judicial” process, rendering him unable to run for president. Since then, hundreds of thousands are protesting in Turkey for justice, despite the protest bans. Thousands are arrested, among many facing disproportionate police violence, including tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, and water cannons.

This screening is arranged by an independent group of UvA students from Turkey, in solidarity with their fellow students in Turkey who face police violence and unlawful arrests upon the latest protests flared-up by İmamoğlu’s detention. Together they will present a short introduction before the film to contextualise what is currently happening in Turkey and how this connects to Burning Days (€3 surcharge).

Holy Spider is an unconventional thriller based on the true story of Iranian serial killer ‘the spider killer’. Award-winning director Ali Abbasi (Gräns) convincingly manages to combine a thrilling drama with insight into Iranian society and the position of women. Journalist Rahimi (Zar Amir Ebrahimi) arrives in Mashhad, Iran’s holiest city. Here she goes to investigate a series of murders of prostitutes, which are seen as sinful. She soon discovers that, as a woman, she needs to know her place. As the killer creates new victims, Rahimi takes ever greater risks to still find out the identity of the ‘spider killer’. Religious beliefs, lack of emancipation and a violent past can create a monster. Rahimi is the only one who sees the truth. As their journey progresses, they are increasingly confronted with changing geographical as well as social and cultural influences that leave a deep impression on them. When they finally end up in a leprosy community in the Peruvian Amazon, a process of awareness is triggered in both men that will determine their later political and social ambitions. Inspired by the diaries of both Alberto Granado and the man who would later become known as, (The Motorcycle Diaries) is first and foremost a search for the inner self and for the origins of a revolutionary spirit.
