This program makes space for dialogue between various practitioners, who each relates differently to the rich tapestry of black femininities. The evening unfolds as an open conversation among artists who navigate the intersections of race, gender, and class. Together, we aim to dissect societal norms and question stereotypical perspectives surrounding the aesthetic choices of black (diasporic) women through the research and artistic practices of the contributors.

Metro54 is pleased to host the book launch of researchers Isabel Flower’s and Marcel Rosa-Salas’ book "Nameplate: Jewelry, Culture & Identity”. This vibrant, visual and historical journey is a celebration of the nameplate jewelry—weaving together deeply personal (hi)stories, popular culture and cultural contextualization. Alongside guest Roberto Luis Martins , Isabel and Marcel will join us digitally on Saturday 27 January and will share their research and ideas during an evening that zooms into cultural objects, popular culture and personal histories that centralize marginalized communities.

In this sonic lecture, Jay Ramier will dive into the rich history of Afro-diasporic music and discover how, throughout different periods and innovations, these expressive forms have not only helped oppressed communities cope but also served as a means to heal, rest, and maintain resilience during times of struggle. Jay Ramier invites you to explore the therapeutic approach that Afro-diasporic people have embraced through the interpolation of music and dance.

Say My Name Say My Name celebrates the poetics of everyday cultural objects – an homage to the street, to culture, to the classed and racialized people that create, remix, dismantle objects that amplify (his)stories of ordinary lives. The nameplates, grillz or nailart— those quiet keepers of memories and holders of minor histories.

In a world shaped by the relentless grip of racial capitalism, where psychological, spiritual, and (im)material impacts abound, scholar Kevin Quashe underlines that “ there is no end to the condition of coloniality and captivity—no end, but there is life in the midst and aftermath of those interminable conditions.” How do everyday objects and their stories offer alternative meaning to heritage and embody archives? 

As political, cultural, and subversive design objects find their way into the racial capitalist market machinery of contemporary art, design, and fashion, how do we hold on to their meaning and politics? Say My Name is a convergence of artistic works, public programs, workshops, and film screenings that amplify, question, and center the ratchet politics, subversive strategies, and artistic imagination forged by artists, activists, organizers, and designers.

With contributions by artists such as Tewa Barnosa, Sara Elawad, Jay Ramier, Anisa Nuh-Ali, L’ENCHANTEUR and Dreea Pavel, The Name Plate/Marcel Rosa-Salas, Isabel Attyah Flower, and Roxane Mbanga.
