Mezrab House of Stories is known for their daring and generous storytelling nights in Amsterdam. 
For this occasion Sahand Sahebdivani, founder of the Mezrab, will bring a jaw-dropping line-up of strong and resilient artists to WORM!

With Rasha Hilwi, Sobhi Khatib, Sinin Nakhle, Chris Keulemans.

Together we'll create a cosy arena in our gallery space, gather around an imaginary campfire. 
Surrounded by the pictures of Wahaj Bani Moufleh (PS), we listen to their stories, and maybe share one of our own.

More about the storytellers:  
Rasha Hilwi  is a Palestinian writer, mother of twin daughters, journalist, editor, DJ, storyteller, feminist and cultural activist. She was born and raised in the city of Akka and now lives in Amsterdam. Her writing and work focus on the questions surrounding “Home بيت” and “Ghorbah غربة” and their intersections with motherhood, femininity, feminism and identity.

Sobhi Khatib is a dedicated advocate for diversity and inclusion. Alongside his work as a Senior Lecturer-Researcher at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Oxford HR, he teaches courses and workshops for diversity officers and hiring managers, and manages a program at the Digital Society School on the intersection of systematic change, technology, and public values. Sobhi also serves as chairman for the Dutch branch of 7amleh, a Palestinian organization focused on digital rights. He also chairs The Hummus Academy, a think-tank exploring the decolonisation of indigenous cuisines.

Sinin Nakhle is a researcher, storyteller and cartoonist. In 2018, Nakhle founded Beirut By Dyke; a web comics series of short stories about being queer in Beirut. The multimedia page, which addresses intersectional issues around gender, sexuality and mental health, is often used as a case study in visual ethnography at the American University of Beirut, Leiden University, SOAS University of London, the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania.

Chris Keulemans grew up in Baghdad, Iraq, among other places. He is a traveling writer, moderator and coach. He led three cultural centers in Amsterdam: Perdu, de Balie and the Tolhuistuin and he is active in Verdedig Noord, the movement against the gentrification of his district. Among other things, he helped found Press Now, to support independent media in the Balkans. He has published several books, fiction and non-fiction, and has published numerous articles on art, engagement, migration, music, cinema and war.

Sahand Sahebdivani  is co-director of the Amsterdam Storytelling Festival and one of the best known storytellers in the Netherlands. In 2004 he founded the Mezrab, which has since grown into one of the world's leading storytelling cafes. Sahand arrived in the Netherlands at the age of three as a refugee from the Iran-Iraq war. His and his family's experiences form the basis of most of his work.

Hamraaz started after Lucie and Khorshid met each other in Rotterdam. The Characteristics of blending the sound of their instruments motivated them to build up this magical combination more and more. 
They have the passion to create the music of modern society with the inspiration of traditional music from the Modal/Makam music they have grown up with. 
Their music takes its inspiration from the beauty of modality, the Dynamic character of Duduk and flute, and rich rhythms coming from strokes of Tanbour and Tar.

Spring is around the corner, which means it’s time to have another Mezrab Storytelling Day! That’s right, a whole day filled with stories!

We started doing these storytelling marathons as a way to celebrate World Storytelling Day and the arrival of spring on the exact day the calendars point to, but it quickly turned out that for the reasons of logistics and practical matters it’s best if we keep it to Sundays. And well, anyhow the coming of spring is something that reaches far beyond the bounds of the calendars!

So, what does it mean? it means that on March 24 we are going to have 12 hours of storytelling, from noon to midnight (or something close to that, we are clearly not the most punctual people). It’s a great day to hang out at Mezrab with your friends in daytime, to hear stories you might have missed, to start drinking in the early afternoon if that’s your thing…. you know, spring stuff!

The whole day will be guided by different themes, and this year, we are drawing inspiration from stories of tricksters. So prepare for stories of being extremely foolish, goofing around, creating the world (perhaps by accident), being an outsider, seeking out adventures, doing the impossible and giving in to temptations.

Come and enjoy stories, music and food, be that for a couple hours or for the whole day. 🙂

MEZRAB STORYTELLING DAY

Fer is a screenwriter. Fer wrote a movie. A Pirates of the Caribbean in a local criollo style, featuring legendary creatures, action scenes, musical numbers and CGI. Fer strongly believes that it is worthy of a big-screen debut. 

Determined to find producers for the movie and looking for ideas for finishing the script, he decided to put on a one-hour show to tell the plot to anyone willing to help. Knowing him, it is very likely that he will take advantage of the situation to vent about what it means to be an Argentinean living abroad.

Bembaké means passing on culture and traditions from generation to generation.

Layba Diawara comes from a family of griots (troubadours) from Guinea where he received the classical music of the Malinke culture in the tradition of his father and grandfather. The kora is a West African instrument, a kind of harp with a gourd as a sound box. In addition to kora, he also plays ngoni, guitar and marimba. As a marimba player he toured the traveled around the world with Bembeya Jazz and settled in Nijmegen about thirty years ago, where he still lives.

Terna Diawara is the next generation to learn the traditions of her father’s native country and now sings her songs to her father’s music.

Bassist Jasper de Beer also comes from a family of musicians and has been playing world music for more than twenty-five years. He became famous with the Amsterdam Klezmer Band but also has experience with African music and toured in Ethiopia and Senegal, among others. In 2015 he started musical collaboration with Layba that has resulted in a number of performances and demo recordings.

Osama Meleegi is a gifted percussionist and born in Sudan.
He also comes from a family of professional musicians and has toured the world for years with, among others, No Blues and the Ethiopian singer Minyeshu.
He also played with Jasper in the Ethiopian group Jump to Addis (Ethiopiques no.15) “The deep groove and organic interplay in combination with Terna’s beautiful voice makes a Bembaké performance an enchanting and magical experience.”

The explosive cocktail of rock'n'roll and traditional Tsifteteli hailing from 1960's Greece is still alive thanks to Deli Teli : the Marseille-based quartet performs a string of forgotten hits that once set Athens on fire, with a contagious energy and a subtle dose of Mediterranean drama.

Half a century ago, while French seasiders would dance to « Yéyé » sounds and dig the Beatles or Pink Floyd, a whole other scene was happening further along the coastline. Mohamad Mehdi Behrad, known as Delnava (meaning Lighted Heart in Persian), embarked on a lifelong journey with the NEY, an ancient Persian instrument cherished by shepherds in the lush forests of Northern Iran from the tender age of 10. Now for the first time in 60 years performing outside of Iran on a mystical journey that transcends time and culture.

The NEY, an instrument rooted in Persian mysticism, resonates with secrets of transformation and awakening. Its connection with cosmic harmony and essence reflects the four elements, influencing human consciousness. The NEY hollow reed grants space for the human breath, weaving tales of pain, joy, and more into haunting melodies. Beyond boundaries of ego, the NEY becomes the most human of instruments, fostering profound connections between souls.

Pouriya Jaberi
This wonderful Daf percussionist accompanying Mohamad Mehdi Behrad learned playing Daf from his older brother who was a highly accomplished player in Iran. Besides being a percussionist, Pouriya also plays the bendir & Tanboor and is an instrument maker.
