Charlie Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows, writing and rewriting songs as he plays, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. At New Grounds, he will take us with him on his interesting journey through life.

Parr first picked up his guitar when he was eight years old. Although he never had a formal lesson and learned by listening to records and watching musicians he admired, he knows how to amaze his audience with incredible fingerpicking on his 12-string baritone resonator, guitar and banjo.

The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of the past decades. When he sings and plays his resonator or 12-string, you can hear influences like Mance Lipscomb, Charley Patton, Spinder John Koerner, Rev. Gary Davis, and Dock Boggs.

In his 2024 release, Little Sun, Parr weaves together stories celebrating music, community, and communing with nature. Putting forth an ambitious and raw album that exemplifies the best of Parr’s sound: a blend of the blues and folk traditions he continues to carry with him and the steadfast originality of a poet.

Wherever Liquid Sun Orchestra goes, it always will be the glorious ray of sunshine that unites audiences with its rousing afrobeat and afro jazz. At New Grounds, this will be no different: they will make us sizzle with positive energy.

The Leiden based band consists of members from different generations, coming from different corners of the world. Their multicultural character is also echoed in their music. Throughout their intriguing mix of jazz, funk, soul, dub and reggae, we always hear the influence of Nigerian grandmaster Fela Kuti.

After performances at Bevrijdingsfestival Amsterdam, Zwarte Cross, Houtfestival Haarlem, Soulfest Antwerp, Peel Slowly and See festival, Gentse Feesten and Surfana Festival, these messengers of the sun are now coming to New Grounds. Get ready for an evening full of hypnotic rhythms, fiery brass and powerful vocals: Liquid Sun Orchestra will make you dance!

World Sessions: a series of ten unique concerts exploring different World Music genres.

Each session, we pair young talent and well-known names from the scene, challenging them to create a special performance for the evening. This time, Leonardo Prieto and Laia Escartin will serve us some Mexican contemporary tunes. Following the concert, there will be a jam session providing other musicians the opportunity to showcase their skills on stage and network in the World Music scene.

World Sessions is led by Daan Arets and organized by Stichting GloMAD with support from New Grounds, Gemeente Rotterdam, Stichting Volkskracht and Popunie.

Flatland Prayer reimagines songwriting in a free-improv context. The trio pulls from a wide variety of influences, combining elements of American folk, avant-garde jazz, and contemporary Classical music.

Though their influences are broad-reaching, Flatland Prayer has a cohesive sound, with all the clarity and tenderness of the musicians behind it. This is as much due to their unusual, stark instrumentation as River Adomeit’s songwriting, wherein each set has its own narrative flow reminiscent of a literary or theater performance. Their debut record, “Like Staring Straight into the Sun,” is the metaphor that the music encapsulates: bold, confrontative, and ill-advised. Written by bassist River Adomeit in the summer of 2022, the record serves as an audio diary of a tumultuous period of River’s life.

At their album release and subsequent tour, Flatland Prayer will perform the record in its entirety, featuring Bjørk Semey with corresponding visuals. An interdisciplinary artist coming from Scandinavia, Bjørk takes a musical approach to the world of visuals. Utilizing the subtle interplay of colors, textures, and moving animations, Bjørk meets Flatland Prayer in the middle as another member of the band – feeling the flow and ebb of their music, and highlighting – or obscuring- certain parts of the lyricism or music.

We are excited to bring you a series of monthly events, dedicated to the world of Rebetiko, where we will explore the sounds of Greek Folk and traditional Turkish music, creating a fusion of musical flavours.

Each time one or two talented bands will be each performing a one hour set. Following the live performances, the session continues with tunes that match the event’s unique style. Take a journey back to the early 20th Century with Rebetiko music, a genre that tells tales of love, resilience, and life’s challenges in the streets of Greece. This music weaves together Turkish and Greek influences, creating a cultural bridge that connects us all.

Rooted in the history of Greece, Turkey, and Europa, Rebetiko is more than just melodies – it’s a reflection of shared stories and experiences. So join us in celebrating the heart and soul of this music, as we explore its distinctive rhythms and narratives, this time with Rebetiko Against The Machine.

With their united passion for Rebetiko and acoustic folk instruments these musicians infuse new paths with a rock sensibility. Their repertoire is rooted in the pivotal era of the 30s to 50s, a period marked by the hardships of two World Wars, profoundly impacting the working class. This is the historical context in which the perspectives, emotions, and beliefs of that time are reflected on the Rebetiko music.

Today, they strive to uphold these intimate and historical elements of Rebetiko while infusing their own experiences and perspectives into their lyrics and original compositions. They’re also committed to preserving traditional Rebetiko songs, sharing their knowledge and wisdom with audiences.

The evening will be opened by an amazing band. After they have created the good atmosphere, the stage will be open for everyone to show their talents, which will create a jamsession. The evening will end with some good tunes by DJ Caliente.

Salsa meets Jazz

Not pleased with spanning continents, musical genres, time periods, and the universe, Kara Delik is responsible for conjuring up a dynamic, contemporary psychedelic Anatolian, post-punk dub sound. The combined output of a set of musicians, each with their own stylistic legacy, has manifested something that is uniquely new and energetic, yet rooted in specific zeitgeists and timeframes, narrating the history of Anatolian rock, Krautrock, and dub, all delivered with a zesty, and explosive live punch.

This international trio of Barış Öner (Istanbul Ghetto Club) on saz, Andi Sommer (Henry Fonda, Yacht Communism) on bass and synths, and drummer Eilis Frawley (Anika, Laura Lee & The Jettes) interweaves energetic, complex rhythms, soundscapes and effects, creating an industrious post-punk melee of Anatolian heat. Founded in 2020, Kara Delik first exploded onto the Berlin scene with their debut EP Tamam, before taking their sounds across the continent, later rewarding fans with a tetralogy of EPs, entitled Singularities.

Across their comprehensive catalog of work, the band have already expressed a strong tonal diversity. Through the dynamic drum work and multiphasic use of effects, the band merge modern raucous intensity, with classic psych spirituality, that incorporates elements of shoegaze and post-punk similar to that of King Gizzard, Beak> and Black Midi, while comparisons can also be made to new-wave Anatolian acts such as Altın Gün and Derya Yildirim.

Live, the band’s sharp dynamics, tight instrumentation and spirited performances have won them a diverse following of those who love post-punk, dance music and Turkish melodies. Having played across the continent and multiple festivals, with an album in the pipeline, no-one is safe from being pulled in the music vortex of Kara Delik.
