Jessica A Rodríguez – encarnadas (f.) embodiments
encarnadas => (f.) embodiments is an audio-visual project in the form of a performance piece and a dance-video piece. This is an 8-minute performance mixing a dancer, live video coding, and ASMR sonic experiences. This piece is an experimental homage to feminine human bodies, present both visually (through the image of the dancer physically and virtually) and sonically (through a sound composition built of repeating breathings, whispers, and other mouth sounds).

Mei-ling Lee – Summoner
Summoner explores the mysterious worlds of owls and peafowl, creatures symbolizing wisdom and foreboding. Crafted from recordings of peafowl, the composition reflects on the delicate balance of nature.

Se-Lien Chuang, Andreas Weixler – Die Schönheit der Vergänglichkeit
The illustrated structure and the organization of lines and strokes are the essence of the Chinese calligraphy. In an artistic analog to musical expression, the rhythmic dynamics of the hand, the time-shifting method, the articulation of breath, the wet pen/dry nib and the speed of pen movement during the writingprocess-momentum combine the characteristics of time and space in a distinctively individual and an immediately compositional way.

Darsha Hewitt (CA/DE) is an interdisciplinary sound artist that critically investigates the materiality of music and sound, (planned) obsolescence and the practices of technology that consumer society throws away. She makes sound/electromechanical installations, drawings, audio-visual works, how-to videos, sculptural installations and performative workshops.

With a media archeological approach, she deconstructs generations of obsolete technology to trace out systems of power, economy and control inherent throughout technological infrastructures. Her works simultaneously demystify the confounding inner systems at play within our technology while transforming it into unexpected sonic experiences that raise questions about our technological entanglements and their implications on humans and ecology.

New instruments and interfaces that are explored for their sonic and interactive affordances. The evening concludes with a jam-sessions combining ‘old’ and new NIMEs.

Koray Tahiroğlu – COMMUNAL
The piece Communal, is a composition written for the AI-terity instrument, idiomatically reflecting the autonomous features of its audio synthesis module. AI-terity instrument is one of the outcomes of research on digital musical instruments, it is a non-rigid musical instrument and comprises an artificial intelligence (AI) method for generating audio samples for real-time sound synthesis.

Gaël Stéfan Moriceau – Study for T-Stick and Granulation
This performance offers an exploration of sound synthesis and instrumental gestures using the T-Stick, a well-established gestural controller. Mapped to a granulation-based sound engine developed in the SuperCollider environment, the T-Stick transforms into a digital musical instrument (DMI), enabling the performer to shape sounds in real-time.

Oliver Kwapis – Lucky
Lucky is a 4-channel, data-driven, electro-acoustic composition for Wacom Tablet and Kyma. In addition to its extra-musical program, Lucky explores the musical and expressive capabilities of the Wacom Tablet, a repurposed instrument originally created as a drawing surface for digital illustrators, animators, and photographers.

Joseph Gascho & Julie Zhu – Fulgura Frango: A Composition for Extended Harpsichord
fulgura frango is a composition for extended harpsichord and electronics. It is conceptually inspired by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre’s opera Céphale et Procris, and many of its techniques refer to Cephale’s bow and arrow that mistakenly pierced Procris’s unwavering heart.

NIME Concert: Explorative NIME

Dutch producer, multi-instrumentalist and composer BINKBEATS – real name Frank Wienk – has a consummate knack for translating organic sounds to the synthesis of electronic music. Wienk’s singular talents amassed both global renown and a passionate following with his Beats Unraveled video-series. Over the course of the decade, he developed his mastery of sound into a rapidly expanding vocabulary, churning out compositions that transcend the realms of IDM, jazz, hip-hop, classical, ambient pop, minimalism, and techno. As an artist, he is working with new technologies and controllers together with more conventional acoustic and electronic musical instruments. He is keen to explore the physicality of sound and searching new ways to touch the sound.

NIME Keynote: Binkbeats – Organic sounds in the synthesis of electronic music

40 years ago, Michel Waisvisz played his first concert with The Hands. The instrument failed spectacularly, and was nearly abandoned, but after a chance encounter at IRCAM in Paris, it was rescued back out of the cardboard box and developed into one of the first sensor-driven musical instruments with a digital environment. The Hands made use of the then brand-new MIDI protocol and paved the path to the development of the STEIM SensorLab, which in turn inspired many early NIME projects.

In this talk, Andi Otto and Kristina Andersen will tell the story of The Hands and the significant traces it has left in the history of new musical interfaces. They will address the complexities of unarchiving a lifetime of musical live practice, which put documentation almost totally in the blind spot. Through this, they will loop back to the original STEIM stance of looking at the instrument as an expression of the desire to make new music and by extension the need for new instruments with which to imagine new music.

In this first of six NIME concerts, we introduce the conference theme: “tactility in a hybrid world”. A concert with tactile interfaces and NIMEs tackling human neurological diversity.

Chi Wang – AEON
An immersive musical experience with touch and motion augmented tambourines. AEON incorporates functionalities such as light, motion, direction, and touch interaction. Through this, a complex network of performative actions can be orchestrated.

Vincenzo Madaghiele and Arife Dila Demir – Pain-creature
An interactive wearable instrument for improvisational movement and sound making. The instrument materializes the distinct qualities of the performer’s chronic Pain through visual-tactile-auditory aspects.

Giacomo Lepri and Nicola Privato – Stacco
A new NIME, embedding magnetic attractors that detect variations in the surrounding magnetic fields. It attracts and repels magnetic spheres displaced by the performer, allowing both fine musical control and the emergence of unpredictable interactions out of its interlaced magnetic forces.

Matthew Rogerson – Dromos/Autos: The Autistic Ontology as Performance
The author is a neurodivergent sound artist and performer. Dromos/Autos is a EEG/neurofeedback performance and informed by their own lived experience as a person diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

NIME Concert: Tactile NIMEs and sensitivity

De belangrijkste internationale conferentie rondom instrumentenuitvinders en muziektechnologie komt naar Nederland! NIME strijkt tussen 2 en 6 september neer in Utrecht. Koop kaarten of volg online!

NIME 2024 gaat in op het thema van tactiliteit: de intieme (gevoels)ervaring van muziek maken, die op gespannen voet lijkt te staan met de toenemende afstand die we tot elkaar hebben of ervaren in onze huidige maatschappij. Hoe creëer je een fysieke ervaring in bijvoorbeeld elektronische muziek?

NIME 2024 vindt plaats op verschillende locaties in de stad Utrecht: HKU-locaties (IBB-laan, Oudenoord, Conservatorium, Theater), maar ook TivoliVredenburg, DUMS, EKKO en creatieve broedplaats de Nijverheid.

NIME wordt verzorgd door de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU), Stichting Gaudeamus en Sounds Like Touch. Kies voor een (online) NIME passe-partout of voor een dagkaart. Passe-partouts voor Gaudeamus Festival geven toegang tot selectie van optredens van NIME.

New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), is an international conference about new musical interfaces, their artistic use and the technologies involved in building them. Researchers from all over the world share their knowledge and late breaking work during the conference. The conference started as a workshop at the CHI conference in 2001 and, since then, has been held annually around the world.

NIME2024 will be held between September 2 and 6, 2024 in Utrecht. The conference will be held physically but with opportunities to follow the conference online as well. This years edition is organised by three institutions: Sounds Like Touch, Gaudeamus and HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht). The conference is partly ingrained within the Gaudeamus Festival 2024. This festival annually attracts about 3000 (inter)national visitors and hosts a the Gaudeamus Award, an incentive prize for composers under 35. Visitors at the Gaudeamus Festival are known to not only be interested in New Music but also in new ways of making it. There will also be lots of concerts that are interesting for the NIME audience and an Off-NIME program is part of it.
