The Plantage Doklaan is a building located in the centre of Amsterdam that has served many functions in its life. It has been a church, a printing business and a school. In 1998 the building was squatted by a group of 10 people who themselves had much experience with squatting and collective awareness in Amsterdam. In 2000 the group bought and renovated the building with government assistance thus securing its future. The Plantage Dok is very much a collective project. It is a building that is run by the people who work there along lines of cooperation and equality. Everybody involved share the responsibility and are encouraged to bring forth their own initiatives. These days some 30 people are present in the building. They are concerned in many fields of activity. There are architects, visual artists, actors, political activists, crafts people, musicians and designers. The (semi) public facilities of the building are a large hall The Dokzaal, a café and gallery space The Dokhuis Gallery and an artist in residence The Dokhuis Guest Studio. The Dokzaal is a communal space for activities inside the building and is also used by outside organizations for various cultural activities. The café/gallery is used for exhibitions and performances. See agenda for upcoming events. The Plantage Dok is very much a collective project.
