The Institute for Night Culture (INC) is on its way: a new type of cultural institution in Amsterdam, solely focused on night culture, and a unique case in the world.

The mission of this new institute is to present, produce and document progressive night culture. It will be a place for artistic production at the intersection of nightlife and contemporary art. The launch of the institute is organized in collaboration with the Stedelijk, museum for modern and contemporary arts and culture and known for identifying emerging artists and new initiatives.

While construction has started on its future building, designed by architecture office XML and nested in a 17th century courtyard in the heart of Amsterdam, the symposium intends to be a catalyst for building its program. As an institution solely dedicated to night culture does not exist anywhere in the world, now there is a rare chance to invent it together.

Nightlife protagonists from Amsterdam, Europe and beyond were asked the same question: What is an Institute for NightCulture? Their answers are collected in a kaleidoscopic book that will be presented during this symposium at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Together, this polyphony of answers situates the foundational framework for the future Institute for NightCulture. Anyone with a taste for free spirit, contemporary art and club culture is very welcome to join and share their thoughts.

Attendees will have a chance to vist for free the new exhibition Unravel (★★★★★ - Volkskrant) and Nora Turato at the Stedelijk Museum, including a return ticket for a second visit after the ADE.

The symposium is hosted by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and INC Foundation.

The Institute for NightCulture is an initiative of the INC Foundation and is supported by the City of Amsterdam. The project is developed by Michiel Kleiss, who has a long history in nightlife as a DJ and former director of RoXY; Paradiso and Lowlands Festival.

What is an Institute for NightCulture?

Marina Abramović

The House with the Ocean View is one of the most daring durational performances where human endurance is put to the test. In this re-performance by Abramović a performer lives in the museum’s exhibition area for twelve consecutive days and nights following strict rules that include fasting, being silent and showering three times daily.

The performance takes place in the recreated installation of Marina Abramović’s original performance from 2002: a platform with three sparsely furnished spaces that serve as a bedroom, living room and bathroom, separated from visitors by ladders with knives for rungs. The audience is invited to silently connect with the performer.

The performance will take place from 5 through 16 June at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam as part of the large retrospective exhibition of Marina Abramović’s work. The performance can be visited during the museum’s opening hours.

In collaboration with the Holland Festival there will also be three special evening openings for a limited number of people on 8, 11 and 15 June.

On 8 and 15 June, visitors will get the exclusive chance to experience the performance at their leisure and - either before or after the exhibition/performance - attend an in-depth talk by curator Karen Archey. It is also possible at all times to take part in the performative installation Counting the Rice.

On 11 June, guides from the Stedelijk Museum will give introductory talks about performance art especially for HF Young and Young Stedelijk members; it is also possible at all times to take part in the performances Counting the Rice and Work Relation.

The evening openings for the performance The House with the Ocean View are a joint initiative from Holland Festival and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Je weekend begint in het Stedelijk! Een vrijdagavond vol programmering dwars door het museum. Hoe dragen ontwerpers bij aan mogelijke oplossingen voor de klimaatcrisis? De aarde is Our F***ing Backyard en daar moeten we voor zorgen. Luister naar kenners als Chihiro Geuzenbroek, Raki Ap en Mounir Samuel. Dans op de beats van DJ Pokkoehontas, glij in een infinity pool vol plastic soep, ga in gesprek met makers en elkaar, ruil je kleding en ga vooral zelf aan de slag.
