Curious to see what happens when the world’s most prestigious percussion festival meets one of the greatest modern music composers? Step into the world of TROMP during your lunch break, where percussion ensemble Havelok performs the works of Philip Glass.

Discover the next generation of musical talent at the TROMP international percussion competition – an event that you can experience right here in town, and even at our very own university. We’ve partnered with the festival to bring you a performance by the Rotterdam-based percussion quartet, Havelok, who are ready to impress with their extraordinary skills.

Havelok will captivate you with a performance of ‘Aguas da Amazonia’ by none other than Philip Glass, the iconic American composer and pioneer of minimalism. This piece reflects the majestic flow of the Amazon River, blending rich harmonies and repetitive rhythmic patterns to evoke a sense of purity and movement.

But that’s not all – the program also features a vibrant and dynamic piece by Florian Magnus Maier, which fuses the rhythmic energy of flamenco with the rich traditions of Balinese music.

Here's your chance to experience the rising stars and some of the world's best percussion artists live, as the TROMP Festival comes to the TU/e campus. 

Tromp Festival
This concert is brought to you in collaboration with the TROMP Festival. Back in the early seventies, engineer Theo Tromp founded the TROMP Biennial in Eindhoven, driven by a passion to give young musicians more opportunities. Over fifty years later, the TROMP International Percussion Competition has grown into the world’s premier competition for solo percussion, staying true to its original mission of supporting and showcasing young talent from around the globe.

Join us for an immersive experience with FOR REAL, a theatrical radio show that explores what it truly means to matter. The starting point is the intellectual undermining of women: the lack of interest in what they think, say, make or try to achieve in life. 

Through the speakers, you’ll hear the voices of fourteen women. They analyse the intellectual undermining, starting from their personal and professional experiences with sexism on the mind and soul. How does this influence your sense of self, your career options, your trust, the building of relationships, and eventually: the course of life?

The audience completes the investigation, when the musicians start interviewing them on the topics at hand. These interactions are carried out by a new technique of improvising, in which the musicians support open and honest conversations as they unfold. Feel free to take part in live interviews, or to simply watch and listen.  

Each performance of FOR REAL will be recorded* and released as a podcast-episode. By doing this, a sounding collection of your voices is created on what it means to matter: to have dignity, to feel understood and to be taken seriously.  

*Participation in the podcast-recording happens on a voluntary basis.

makes musical journalism by combining in-depth, social journalism with lots of original music. Artistic director Andrea Voets is undertaking a worldwide search into the question ‘how to feel safe’, with support of the selective Dutch grant FastForward. The home-base of Resonate Productions is De Balie in Amsterdam.

“The Netherlands needs a completely new building culture.” This, according to architect and urban designer Floris Alkemade, is the answer to the question of how to solve the housing crisis and keep the Netherlands livable.

The housing challenge currently facing the Netherlands is perhaps the greatest social challenge since the Dutch post-war reconstruction of 1945-1965. A solution must be found for the acute shortage of housing for the growing population. However, this issue cannot be viewed in isolation from the other complex problems facing the Netherlands: climate change, the transition to renewable energy, and the sustainability of agriculture and the living environment. Issues in which the scarcity of space has become central.

Fundamental demographic shifts are also a factor. Residents’ needs are changing, requiring a diversity of housing types as well as a rethinking of the identity of village and city centers, the combination of living and working, and the organization of an affordable society. As the current building culture is faltering and we are discovering the downsides of our ingrained patterns, it is time to change direction toward a new social, technological and economic concept.

Speaker
Architect and urban designer Floris Alkemade studied Build Environment at TU Delft and worked at the leading international firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) from 1990 to 2008, becoming a partner in 2001. In 2008, he founded his own firm, Floris Alkemade Architect (FAA), with projects in the Netherlands and abroad. For several years, he lectured at Ghent University and the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. From 2015 to 2021, he held the position of Rijksbouwmeester (Chief Government Architect) within the College van Rijksadviseurs (Board of Government Advisors). He provided the Dutch cabinet with solicited and unsolicited independent advice on architecture, urbanism and landscape, and published the essay De toekomst van Nederland – De kunst van richting te veranderen (Thoth, 2020). Alkemade also co-authored the recently published Report State Committee Demographic Developments 2050 (Jan. 15, 2024) on the population growth and prosperity resilience of the Netherlands. His current projects include the development of the Evoluon area in Eindhoven and the conversion of monasteries.

Towards a New Dutch Building Culture

Put your work, deadlines and thoughts aside for a moment and drift away on beautiful classical sounds this afternoon. 

It has become a new tradition for Studium Generale: in the week before exams start, we offer a lunch concert to ease your mind and fill it with beautiful music. This time, we are delighted to spotlight Laurens de Man, winner of the prestigious Nederlandse Muziekprijs, the highest honor awarded to a Dutch classical musician by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. It is even more special because he is the first organist to win the prize.

While today's concert in the Blauwe Zaal won't feature an organ (though we hope to invite him to play the organ in the Auditorium in the future), Laurens will play the grand piano and also, quite uniquely, the clavichord.

Laurens de Man studied piano, organ, and harpsichord at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Berlin University of the Arts, graduating in 2019 with top marks. He has won several prestigious prizes, including the Prinses Christina Concours, J.S. Bach Competition, Martini Organ Competition, and Silbermann Wettbewerb, and was named "ECHO Young Organist of the Year 2020."

Currently, Laurens de Man shares his expertise by teaching organ at the Utrecht Conservatory of Music and piano at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! Director George Miller waited a whopping nine years but is finally back with an exciting new chapter in the Mad Max saga. Get ready to witness the origin story of the fierce renegade warrior, Furiosa, before her epic encounter and team-up with Mad Max. Don't miss this thrilling journey into the wasteland!

2015's groundbreaking fourth installment, Mad Max: Fury Road, redefined the non-stop action genre. This prequel, Furiosa, delves even deeper into the post-apocalyptic world (better known as “Australia”), telling the story of young Furiosa as she navigates a world of constant war. Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa falls into the clutches of a massive biker horde led by the warlord Dementus. As they sweep through the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel, ruled by the tyrant Immortan Joeth. With these two power-hungry leaders vying for control, Furiosa finds herself in a relentless battle to return home.

Featuring an impressive cast including Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth and a pulsating score, Furiosa is an outstanding experience on the big screen.

The table is set, the meeting agenda is printed. “The water is ready for pouring and the coffeemaker is dripping”. A meeting is about to happen – are you ready? 

Three executives meet to discuss urgent matters. But will they be able to find an appropriate solution? And how does that work in a culture where ‘polderen’ (consensus-building) is a verb? What starts as a normal meeting changes into a ritual with no need for language. What happens to a meeting when everything but its well-worn procedures are stripped away? 

De Vergadering (the Meeting) is a deadpan performance (mime) for all those who passionately hate, as well as those who passionately love, a good old-fashioned meeting. 

Studio Dooie Mus are pioneers of post-traumatic theater, exploring the experiences of those for whom existence is something absurd and in need of some decent user instructions. With The Vergadering —inspired by the poem "Vergadering" by Rodaan Al Galidi— they reshape traditional Dutch social conventions into an absurd visual performance that explores the world of decision-making, reconsideration and doubt. This absurd symphony tries to find a deeper meaning in everyday actions.

The Vergadering premiered at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival 2023 and is now on tour. On October 17th, The Vergadering will take place under the flattering and crisp fluorescent lights of TU/e’s Vertigo building.

Picture this: occurring atop an apocalyptic garbage dump are a concert by three percussionists on instruments made of plastic and a lecture by the Plastic Soup Surfer. Welcome to... Soundtrack of the Plastic Age.

What does music made from plastic waste sound like? What does it look like? Discover the answers with Rogier De Nijs Group's unique installation and performance 'Soundtrack of the Plastic Age' featuring homemade instruments crafted from plastic waste.  

Experience a musical and social journey by drummer Rogier de Nijs and co-musicians Sjaak van Dam and Sylvan Amoureus. The performance is an audiovisual reflection of the time in which we live today: the plastic age, or according to some geologists “the Plasticeen”, a geological period in which we find plastic as a ‘raw material’ in our soil.  The Rogier De Nijs Group invites you to explore various global locations impacted by our consumer society through powerful video projections and rousing percussion compositions and soundscapes.  

Expect innovative music made with instruments crafted from collected plastic, demonstrating that even discarded materials can create extraordinary sounds.  

Tonight's event is more than just a concert. Merijn Tinga, also known as the Plastic Soup Surfer, will give a lecture providing insights into the underlying issues of plastic waste. Tinga, known for his campaigns and unique surfing expeditions targeting politics and businesses, will share his experiences and answer questions about the topic.  

Join this evening and witness how you can make extraordinary and contemporary music with something that seems to have lost its value, namely plastic waste.

Soundtrack of the Plastic Age

Cycling is second nature to everyone who grew up in the Netherlands. But a cycling culture is not unique to our country! From Africa to North America, this lecture will take you on a global journey to explore what makes cycling thrive in some cities and not in others. 

With more than 35,000 kilometers of fully segregated bicycle lanes, the Netherlands is renowned for its bicycle-friendly infrastructure and culture. There are more bicycles than people in the country. This mode of transportation has a significant impact on our economy, health and environment.  

It wasn’t always like this, and many factors have contributed to the success of Dutch cycling. The research project Cycling Cities looks at 100 years of cycling policy and practice around the world. Why have some cities become true cycling cities and others not? It traces how policymakers, engineers, cyclists, and community groups have made a difference since the early twentieth century. Innovation in non-motorized mobility is key, and in some cities it is abundant. Ruth Oldenziel discusses how smart cycling innovations in different parts of the world are leading to improved urban mobility and more resilient and livable urban regions.  

Prof. dr. Ruth Oldenziel is a Professor for The History of Technology at TU/e and is particularly interested in the relationship between Europe and the United States. Her research focuses on the mutual shaping and exchanging of technological knowledge and practices between Europe and the United States in a transnational context. She has extensively researched the integration of cycling into urban planning and its societal impacts. She directs a research program on Sustainable Urban Mobility since the 1850s (SUM) and is program leader of Cycling Cities: The Global Experience (CC) research project - involving 50 cities in 25 countries. In 2025, a new publication Cycling Cities: The African Experience will be released.

Cycling Cities

Now here’s a film that has everything to become a modern cult classic: an enchanting main character, a punk attitude, a fantastic soundtrack and bizarre plot twists. Sometimes magical, always provocative. The Sweet East is sharp and mocks hyper-specific niche groups in America and plays with representations of popular culture in fascinating ways.

High school student Lillian, played by Talia Ryder (Never Rarely Sometimes Always), is an angelic but passive schoolgirl who is bored during her school trip to Washington D.C. When she becomes separated from her group, she explores on her own and begins a road trip through the cities and forests of the East Coast of the United States. Separated from her classmates, she tumbles like an “Alice in Wonderland” into an absurdist lair where she meets people from different subcultures: neo-Nazis, QAnon supporters, and hipster filmmakers. But uninhibited and fearless as she is, Lilian always manages to get herself out of oppressive situations. 

The Sweet East, the directorial debut of Sean Price Williams who is well known as a cinematographer (Good Time, Marjorie Prime), is an absurd and humorous road movie with enchanting characters, an eclectic soundtrack, and bizarre plot twists. The filmmaker creates a world full of cinephilic references and sharp satire, highlighting the absurdities of contemporary America. 

Awards
The film had its world premiere at last year's Cannes Film Festival and subsequently won numerous awards at various international festivals. And fun-fact: Lead actress Talia Ryder also sang the opening number.
