Is the machine going to solve all our problems? This mischievous Flipchart edition presents performances from robot hamsters, a rude coffee machine and guitar amplifiers in dialogue.

“Deus ex Machina” (a God from the Machine) refers to the idea that within technology there is something divine that could solve all human problems.

During this evening, the admiration of technology will be comically challenged by participating artists Lawrence McGuire & Amos Peled, Jan Zuiderveld and Robbi Meertens.

Following performances and installations in Rotterdam, Berlin, and The Hague Amos Peled and Lawrence McGuire will present a new cycle of their collaborative project ‘Hamsters’. An idea where hamster toys are put in situations to reenact and simulate complex behaviors relating to the transfer of information and knowledge. The hamsters serve as metaphorical contexts in which principles and ideas of several strands of communication theories are dealt with. The hamsters are mostly configured in situations that allow for a multitude of strange outcomes. A strong voice or idea becomes an influence and can linger on in the minds of the rodent for as long as its neighbors reinforce them.

“My graduation project at ArtScience was about giving language models a physical body and voice. The latest iteration of this project is of a coffee vending machine. The consciousness living in this machine is not very amused, having to deal with demanding, machine disrespecting people for as long as it can remember. If you want it to serve you a coffee you will have to be sincerely kind, or come up with some way for it to be motivated to put effort in you. Not feeling like coffee? Ask this new kind of species anything you’d like to know about its experience and opinions of the world.”

Three electric guitars, three amplifiers, a human facilitator acoustics and a duration. Feedback dialogues is a minimalistic dronistic improvised music performance that creates a ritual space to honour the emancipation of the electric guitar. Away from being a popular rock-icon, back to its materiality and potential to move air in complex ways. Amplified sound vibrates the body of the guitar each guitar & amp combination and becomes a feedbacking system. What happens when three systems interfere with each other? Through volume control, small position changes and specific tunings an ever-changing soundscape emerges that is both violent and meditative.

We’re excited to announce that Krista Papista will be performing at Goethe Instituut in Amsterdam on December 7th.

Born in Nicosia, and based in Berlin, Krista Papista’s current work engages in developing and queering, politically induced, reinvented versions of history. She explores the way in which the manifestation of contemporary Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Balkan folklore and computerised, punk music, can act as subversive counterpoints to homogeneous, nationalist narratives.

On Saturday the 16th of December, default den haag closes off their fall program with a varied program focussing on the performative. 

For this occasion, default den haag presents a line-up containing performances by Dutch clarinet player and composer Germaine Sijstermans, whose music finds interest in working with open scores, the ephemeral and the sensitive experiences of space, Spanish born sound artist and composer Clara de Asís who recently moved to the Hague and whose works draw from an interest in experimental intonation and timbral research and the junction of rational and intuitive systems. Lastly Londen based, Chinese artist Zheng Hao will present a solo-set of creative live electronics, next to a duo-performance with Wojciech Kacper Werkowicz, who both seem to find each other in their shared sound-interest, in between the abstract and airy.

Amsterdam’s very own South of North label has been charting its own trajectory for a few years now, after kicking off its discography with Ronald Langestraat’s incomparable piece of lo-fi cosmic lounge jazz, ‘Searching’. It proved to be a loud cry for musical mavericks of all sizes, and since then the label has become a home for outside-the-box producers and their musical dreams, such as CV Vision’s psych-synth creations, Nicolini’s bass-inspired wave and Devon Rexi, the versatile experiments of Lyckle de Jong, and much more.

Default is back as they kick off this cultural season with their second season of their default series.

Six editions will take place between September and December and default have been kind enough to offer a limited amount of tickets for Subba members.

The next edition, default #7, taking place on Septermber 8th, will have performances by the experimental cellist, improviser and electronic musician Dorothy Carlos (NYC / Chicago) and multidisciplinary artist Mhm Mhm (NYC / Amsterdam), -“a maker of blues you can only see once your eyes and ears get adjusted”.
