‘The River is Me’ is een korte film over de Whanganui-rivier in Nieuw-Zeeland en de wettelijke erkenning ervan als een rechtspersoon. Geregisseerd door David Freid, verkent deze 17 minuten durende film de baanbrekende beslissing en de culturele en ecologische betekenis van de rivier voor het Māori-volk. 

Jarenlang was er een geschil over het eigendom van deze rivier. Nu bezit ze zichzelf. In wat wordt beschouwd als een wereldprimeur, is de Whanganui-rivier erkend als een rechtspersoon, met dezelfde rechten en verantwoordelijkheden als jij en ik. Maar het bepalen waar een rivier eindigt en de rest van de natuur begint — dat staat mogelijk nog ter discussie.

‘The River is Me’ is a short film about the Whanganui River in New Zealand and its legal recognition as a person. Directed by David Freid, this 17-minute film explores the groundbreaking decision and the cultural and environmental significance of the river for the Māori people. 
For many years, this river’s ownership was under dispute. Now, it owns itself. In what’s believed to be a world’s first, the Whanganui River’s been granted legal personhood, with the same rights and responsibilities as you and me. But determining where a river ends and the rest of nature begins — that may be up for some debate.

Het LAC Trio onderzoekt de expressieve mogelijkheden en tonale nuances van hun instrumenten. Elektronica en een onconventionele kijk op geluid zorgen voor een spannende samensmelting van klassieke muziek en jazz. Het publiek wordt meegenomen in een reis vol kleurrijke momenten en ondergedompeld in originele muziekstukken, jazz en herinterpretaties van componisten als Mompou en Debussy.

Ieva Seviakovaite is a fashion designer specialising in sustainable fashion and uniforms. These themes also play a role in her artwork. In this photo series of approximately 20 silent and moving images in a scented environment, she investigates how flowers and plants form part of our cultural and personal identity.

“Leliumai" - a renowned refrain in Lithuanian Advent folk songs, was once used metaphorically to emphasise the beauty of the bright, mysterious season, as well as the relationship between humans and nature.

The genesis of this project traces back to the quarantine period, a time when Ieva cultivated a rustic Lithuanian flower garden. Delving into the essence of Lithuanian flora; she explored their origins, names, and cultural references, culminating in the project's title, 'Leliumai,' inspired by a beloved folk song. Experimenting with photography techniques, ordinary plants were transformed into captivating portraits, blurring the lines between photography and painting. Ieva ventured further to incorporate video and scents from essential oils, creating a multi-sensory experience to immerse viewers in the beauty and significance of nature.

Artist Bios:

Karen Ng - Toronto-based improviser Karen Ng can be found in many different projects across a wide range of music. She has performed all over North America, Europe and Asia with The Weather Station, Andy Shauf, Lido Pimienta, Luka Kuplowsky, Badge Époque Ensemble, Tim Baker, L CON, Happiness Project, and Do Make Say Think. Currently Karen is involved in several ad hoc duos, trio and quartets, namely in Toronto, Brooklyn and Berlin.

Marina Džukljev – Serbian pianist, educator and active performer in the fields of free improvisation, applied, contemporary and classical composed music. She collaborates with wide range of multimedia artists across Europe and further such as: Dieb13, Franz Hautzinger, Joel Grip, Michael Griener, Jasper Stadhouders, Biliana Voutchkova, Vasco Trilla, John Dikeman, Richard Barret and many more. In each project, Marina is fully dedicated to the quest for new sonoric capabilities of piano playing and a non-traditional approach, by using the extended techniques of instrument playing in a genuine and inventive way. The unity of wide spectrum of expressive elements can be heard in her music: abstract, experimental, free jazz - all are embraced by the heritage of history of pianism.

Gregory Eric Smith – Canadian composer/drummer, based in Rotterdam, a musical chameleon whose prowess radiates in both his compositions and collective improvisational settings. He navigates between jazz and electronic scenes, producing, performing, and touring alongside David Binney, Chris Speed, Joachim Badenhort, Susana Santos Silva, Goncalo Almeida,  Simon Jermyn, and Ada Rave, among others. He also leads the Gregory Eric Smith Band featuring Andrew Moreno, Jonathan Ho, and Jonathon Haffner.

Xaloq's live is a journey through the traverses of Valencian folk music, which withdraws new paths in the way of interpreting the traditional roots.

These paths may go from the singing style of albaes de l'Horta, to the story of an XIX century revolution, passing through plains of free improvisation and forests of melodies inspired by the characteristic ornaments of valencian folk.

With all these elements Xaloq has a warm and vibrant live, the type of performance that makes the audience hold their breath: an experience beyond the concert.

Matteo Paggi and the Giraffes

“ZenSutra” consists of percussionist and tabla player Tarang Poddar and pianist Aseo Friesacher.

This project emerged out of deep friendship and the common passion for exploring the possibilities of bringing the world of Indian classical music and the world of Jazz together. Through their electro-acoustic instrumentation, the duo finds its way to let the listener immerse into their mantra-like soundscapes. The original and narrative compositions of the duo will promise a musical experience not to be forgotten.
