On April 20, the renowned Argentine bandoneonist Santiago Arias will perform a unique concert at Theater Munganga in Amsterdam. The performance will take the audience on a musical journey through the diverse rhythms of northern Argentina, weaving the rich sounds of the Andes with the depth and melancholy of tango, the iconic genre of the Río de la Plata.

With an innovative and contemporary approach, Santiago Arias explores these musical traditions, accompanied by guest artists. He offers an intimate and captivating experience that connects the roots of Argentine folklore with new musical horizons.

Santiago Arias is a multi-instrumentalist, although the bandoneon is his instrument of choice.  
He was born and grew up in Jujuy (in the very North of Argentina), where he absorbed the music of the Andes, his inspiration; now he takes it up again with his own expressiveness and with the opening of the traditional forms that improvisation offers.

He released 2 of his own albums: "Fuellisto" (2014) and "Evocación de Carnaval" (2021), playing bandoneon solo in both of them.

His latest record "Evocación de Carnaval" was created and recorded in the COVID 19’s quarantine and shows a Santiago Arias only with the bandoneon, and in some cases the voice, intimate and with room for free improvisation on anonymous folkloric melodies, with the noticeable influence of his trajectory through various musical genres.

Currently performs a bandoneon and voice concert, with a folkloric repertoire (approached from a renewed and not so traditional aesthetic) from the northwest of Argentina and the Andean part of Bolivia, where he plays songs from his two solo albums, and music from other genres such as Tango and Jazz. He integrates the set with an effects pedal that gives a new perspective to folk music, taking it out of the traditional sound, and giving it a dreamlike aesthetic at times but without losing the root and weight that characterizes Andean music.

He also has four more albums from other projects of his own, and participated in the recording of the album "Absinthe" (2019), by the English guitarist and composer Dominic Miller for the german label ECM, wich took him on tour for two years through Asia and Europe.

Zorzal is a son huasteco trio (mexican folklore music from the northeast region of Mexico called Huasteca) leaded by César Puente.
The so called Son Huasteco or Huapango, is warm and joyful music, played and sang by the three huapangueros: César Puente on jarana (5 strings guitar), Fátima Hernández on the Violin and Pablo Suaste on Guitarra Huapanguera (8 strings guitar).

The trio combines poetry, improvisation and dance into colorful songs.
Zorzal has the ambition to build a bridge between the Mexican folklore music Son Huasteco and the jazz scene in Amsterdam.

Milunes is a tango salon in the warm and theatrical atmosphere of Teatro Munganga.

Ik ben Valerie, inmiddels vijf jaar DJ. Misschien klinkt dat alsof het me zomaar overkomen is, maar ik ben DJ geworden omdat ik mijn liefde voor muziek wil delen – muziek die mij diep raakt.

Ik dans zelf al 25 jaar tango, en mijn gevoel voor tangomuziek is in de loop der jaren alleen maar sterker geworden.  
Tijdens traditionele milonga’s draai ik graag de orkesten uit de *Golden Age* van de tango. Maar ik waardeer ook de interpretaties van sommige moderne orkesten en draai deze afhankelijk van de sfeer en de milonga.

Soms word ik uitgenodigd om te draaien op milonga’s die een mix van traditioneel en neo tango willen horen. Dat doe ik ook met plezier. Ik sta open voor verschillende stijlen – geen dogma's wat mij betreft.

Mijn stijl is intuïtief: ik draai op gevoel, omdat ik meen goed aan te voelen wat er op de dansvloer gebeurt – welk orkest, ritme of emotie op dat moment welkom is.

We will practice Caixa do Divino*—Brazil's only drumming tradition exclusively led by women. Rooted in Candomblé Houses and Maroon Communities, this tradition is part of the Orixá Oxalá celebrations, an ancient force of nature. The Caixeiras (priestesses) sing and praise the prophecy:

✨ The Earth will know one hundred years of peace, under the rule of children. ✨

Caixa do Divino chantings are slow, steady litanies accompanied by drumming. You will be encouraged to learn both playing and singing simultaneously. The chanting is in Brazilian Portuguese, incorporating words and concepts from Brazilian Creole dialects influenced by Yorubá, Kimbundu, and native languages spoken in Candomblé houses and native communities.

Workshop Facilitator -  
The workshop will be led by Mameto Kaloyá, a non-binary, queer Roma diasporic descendant born into the Candomblé tradition (Maroon communities and houses). Kaloyá holds the title of Egbomi (poorly translated as 'young priestess') in the Candomblé House of Redandá (Cipó-Guaçu, Brazil). From an early age, they inherited multiple drumming and chanting practices from elders and learned the Caixa do Divino from the Caixeiras of the Fanti Ashanti House. Kaloyá is also a long-time participant in the Festa do Divino - Associação Cachuera! and an apprentice of Master Daniel Reverendo, Mother Gunzolande, and other traditional masters.

Antonio Villeroy, singersongwriter from Brasil interprets classics of Bossa Nova.

Considered a genius artist by musicologists and specialized journalists, João Gilberto revolutionized Brazilian music by creating the guitar beat and the way of singing that gave rise to Bossa Nova.

Through their interpretations and the music of composers such as Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moares, this musical genre definitively projected Brazilian culture on a global scale.

In Tribute to João Gilberto Antonio presents some of the main songs that became known worldwide through the voice of the brilliant Bahian artist, such as Wave, Insensatez, Garota de Ipanema, Caminhos Cruzados and Retrato em Branco e Preto, among others.

In addition to Bossa Nova being one of his most important artistic influences, Antonio also has other emotional motivations for putting on a show dedicated to the memory of João Gilberto.

Antonio Villeroy, renowned Brazilian singer-songwriter, brings his 11-year-old daughter Luísa, who already sings and composes, for a warm ‘family’ show.

Pamela, the matriarch of the clan, and Antonella, the youngest, aged 7, are the special guests.

The show will mix authorial songs with songs from Brazilian folklore.

Claudia Maoli and Carlos Lagoeiro, the hosts, will join the troupe to make the show even more fun.

The opera ‘the guitars of death’ was written by composer Elomar Figueira Mello in the tradition of early baroque Italian opera, but is also full of elements from the culture of the Sertão of Bahia: melodic and rhythmic lines, recitatives referring to ancient troubadour art and Iberian Romanticism.  Henrique Gomide (workshop and piano), Joao Luis Nogueira (guitar) and the Apollo Ensemble will introduce the colorful musical world of the interior of Brazil with a lecture, workshop and music.

TUESDAY 29 APRIL
10:30 - 13:30 Lecture : Together with Brazilian Jazz pianist and arranger of the opera, Henrique Gomide, we dive deeper into the world of Elomar. What did the original sound like? How was the opera created? After this lecture, you will know all about the opera ‘the guitars of death’ and much more!

14:30 - 17:30 Workshop : Led by by Henrique Gomide, together with the members of the Apollo Ensemble, you will be immersed in the Brazilian rhythms used in Elomar's opera. The rhythms will be clapped, spoken and sung, so that by the end of the workshop you will have a whole pallet of Brazilian rhythms in your repertoire!

19:30-20:30 Brazilian evening ‘A taste of the opera’ performed by the Apollo Ensemble combined with original Brazilian music, played by Henrique Gomide (piano) and João Noguiera (guitar). This will of course be concluded with drinks and Brazilian snacks!

El Periquín is celebrating a joyous milestone this year: 40 years of sharing his love of flamenco on stage. With his intense playing, he has touched many hearts in many countries over the years.

As a teenager, Peter fell for the sound of the acoustic guitar. For the timing, swing and rhythm. For decades he deepened his knowledge and skill. The journey took him past packed halls and small studios.

El País – Spain’s largest daily newspaper – wrote of Peter’s music, “Intense, deep, without glitz and glamour.” Peter lets his hands speak. The music and the person are fused into one.

This is reflected more than ever on his first album without accompanying instruments homecoming. From the various traditional flamenco styles Peter has composed beautiful personal stories.

An album with variation from subdued and sensitive styles like soleá, farruca and balada to the cheerful tangos and exuberant bulerias. And don’t forget the traditional zambra with Arabic influence in the song naciemento. Subdued guitar playing with an intimate mysterious hypnotic atmosphere.

Teatro Munganga is the theater hall of Munganga: a multidisciplinary forum for artists and art lovers. This monumental building – the former horse tram depot on the Schinkelhavenstraat – is located a few meters from the entrance to the Vondelpark, on the Amstelveenseweg.
