Baroeg on Tour stops for a second time at Grounds with the melancholic gothic doom of Dranconian, the melodic death metal of Nailed To Obscurity and the progressive sound of Fragment Soul.

Draconian
The Swedish gothic doom institute Draconian has been around for 30 years. Good reason to go on tour. The company has been delivering melancholy beauty mixed with heavy depressive sounds for seven albums. This is also reflected in the combination of grunts and angelic vocals. In short, a spectacle piece par excellence, both on record and on stage.

Nailed To Obscurity
Nailed To Obscurity has been active since 2005. This German band plays melodic doom/death with a progressive edge. Think of a mix of Opeth and Novembers Doom. It is also not surprising that the quintet releases their records via Nuclear Blast.

Fragment Soul
Fragment Soul is a Greek/Canadian band that will debut in 2021 with their first album. The successor will be released this year. Musically speaking, you can describe the band as progressive doom metal. An interesting band to discover.

Draconian

Organek is the band around singer-guitarist and songwriter Tomasz Organek. Especially in their home country Poland, their equally melodic and versatile altrock - which seamlessly transitions from punky or rootsy to electronic or melancholic - is so popular that they easily string together the million streamers. In addition, IDLES was recruited to remix their hit 'Pogo'. Tomasz's many diverse musical contributions pop up everywhere, from a Lady Pank anniversary release to a Męskie Granie Orkiestra live album and even a 'Toy Story' soundtrack. Then a performance at Baroeg is not that crazy anymore.

After two platinum releases, the album "Na razie stoję, na razie patrzę" is an album long awaited, primarily due to its stylistic diversity, but also the importance of the content contained therein. In addition to typical Organek texts about interpersonal relationships, there are also journalistic threads commenting on social phenomena in Poland in recent years. The band has also greatly expanded its stylistic range by reaching for post punk and electronic music, for which the basis is analog sounds from the 70s. As Tomasz Organek said: "retro is no longer enough for us. It's not time for memories, it's time to talk about what's happening here and now, and for that you need a contemporary language". The "Na razie stoję, na razie patrzę" tour is a dynamic, catchy and uncompromising show with new music for new times. Oi!



Whether the Rotterdam band Death By Audio uses gear from the eponymous American guitar effects pedal manufacturer is unknown to us, although a Death By Audio Supersonic Fuzz Gun could easily be part of the collection of foot clickers; nice to navigate between shoegaze and noiserock. The most recent EP from Death By Audio is called 'Beautiful Parasite' and there the lovers find themselves with this beautiful music.

Wavefest presents: Twin Tribes + Wingtips (Baroeg On Tour @Rotown)

In 1981 gooide Open Jongerencentrum Baroeg de deuren open. Niemand kon destijds bevroeden dat Baroeg zou uitgroeien tot een internationaal gerenommeerd cultpodium waar acts uit alle windstreken zouden optreden. Dat is niet zonder slag of stoot gegaan. Vooral de toewijding van een leger vrijwilligers heeft dit baken op Zuid in stand gehouden en gemaakt tot wat het is: een Rotterdamse thuishaven voor misfits die een passie delen voor alternatieve en extreme muziek.

Zo is ook het jubileumboek gemaakt door gedreven vrijwilligers die Baroeg een warm hart toedragen. Op de vertrouwde locatie aan de Spinozaweg wordt momenteel een nieuwe Baroeg gebouwd, want het oude pand had zijn beste tijd gehad. Een goed moment om het Baroegboek te presenteren in de Centrale Bibliotheek Rotterdam. Lezers, luisteraars en ogendekostgevers: iedereen is welkom.

Bijna 20 jaar geleden stond het Franse Merrimack in Baroeg. Dat was vlak voor de black metalband uit Parijs hun tweede album uit zou brengen. In 2024 verschijnt het zesde album “Of Grace And Gravity” waarop we een band horen die enorm is gegroeid. De puriteinse black metalgeest is intact gebleven en vergelijkingen met Watain liggen voor de hand. Toch is er een eigen stijl die vooral in het melodieuze aspect te horen is.

Gevurah komt uit het Canadese Montreal en leverde in 2011 een eerst demo af. Intusse heeft dit gezelschap ook twee volledige albums uit. En daarop hoor je snoeiharde black metal waarin ook ruimte is voor dissonante en melodieuze elementen. Kortom, een zeer interessante package op deze woensdagavond.

In 2023 bestond de Poolse death metal legende 40 jaar. Dat werd uitgebreid gevierd met in totaal 110 shows in 32 landen op 5 continenten. In 2024 gaat de band rond frontman Piotr gewoon door met toeren. Deze keer doen ze Rotterdam ook weer eens aan. Dit is overigens de 20e keer dat Vader op een door Baroeg georganiseerd evenement staat. Dat zegt eigenlijk voldoende over de klasse van dit death metalinstituut.

Het Griekse Bio-Cancer heeft in 2016 een keer in Baroeg opgetreden. Nu komen de thrashers dus opnieuw naar Rotterdam. In 2023 verschijnt het derde album “Revengeance” uit via het Nederlandse Hammerheart Records. Overigens is Bio-Cancer ook de eerste Griekse band die in China getoerd heeft.
Het Franse Warside was in 2023 ook al met Vader op pad. Hoewel het een relatief nieuwe naam is, hebben de bandleden de nodige ervaring. Onder andere in de band Benighted. Met hun brute death metal is Warside zeker een band om in de gaten te houden.

De cursisten van Rock Central presenteren zich vandaag met hun bands in SoundVille. Rock Central is een samenwerkingsverband tussen SKVR en Baroeg. Het is een muziek coachingsproject dat zich speciaal richt op muzikanten binnen de harde en alternatieve genres.

In 2019 zette Total Chaos zijn 30-jarig jubileum luister bij met een optreden tijdens Tales From The Punx. Dit jaar kunnen we hun zevende lustrum vieren aan de andere kant van de Maas. De mazen van de wet worden opgezocht door deze diehards, want een van hun credo’s is het aloude ‘Fuck The System’. Dat The Exploited een gelijknamige pogokraker heeft is geen toeval, aangezien de Britse betonpunkpioniers een van Total Chaos’ grote bronnen zijn, terwijl ze daar hun eigen Californische kick aan geven. En zoals frontman Rob Chaos ooit zei: “Zolang de wereld niet verandert zal er altijd behoefte zijn aan punkbands.”

Acidez brak de tent af bij de tweede Tales From The Punx en deed dat een jaar later in Baroeg nóg rigoureuzer met Disturbance. We riepen al eerder dat ze de Trumps muur zouden wegblazen met een muur van geluid. Roodkapje kan wel tegen een opstootje, dus het dak gaat er alleen figuurlijk gesproken af. Niettemin blijft Acidez’ Mexicaanse crossoverpunk een machtig wapen.

In de jaren 70 was D.O.A. een van de grondleggers van hardcore punk. Het eveneens Canadese Phane trad vier decennia later in hun voetsporen, al trapt dit viertal van meet af aan het gas nog een stuk harder in. Neem het venijn van de vroege D.O.A. met de impact van Discharge en je weet zo’n beetje wat je voor je kiezen gaat krijgen.
