Tender is the Night vertelt het verhaal van rijke Amerikanen die tussen de twee wereldoorlogen neerstrijken aan de Franse Rivièra. De opera verklankt de sociale hogedrukpan waarin zij terechtkomen en de losbandigheid en chaos van de Roaring Twenties. Het is een verhaal vol romantiek en glamour; over een decadent leven vol succes en geld dat door verslaving en mentale problemen langzaam afglijdt naar de desillusie van crisis en depressie. Het feest kwam abrupt ten einde door de beurskrach van 1929, waarna men berooid wakker werd.

Naar de roman van F. Scott Fitzgerald door Kees Arntzen. Deze uitvoering van een aantal fonkelnieuwe scènes markeert zijn afscheid bij CREA: een jazzy zangfestijn met negen solozangers, vier saxofoons en een vocaal octet.

Tender is the Night tells the story of wealthy Americans who settled on the French Riviera between the two World Wars. The opera captures the social pressure cooker they entered, reflecting the debauchery and chaos of the Roaring Twenties. It is a tale of romance and glamour; of a decadent life filled with success and money that, through addiction and mental struggles, slowly slides into the disillusionment of crisis and depression. The party of the Roaring Twenties came to an abrupt end with the stock market crash of 1929, leaving everyone to wake up penniless.

Based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald by Kees Arntzen. This performance of several brand-new scenes marks his farewell to CREA: a jazzy vocal feast featuring nine solo singers, four saxophones, and a vocal octet.

How Europe Breaks Free: A Blueprint for Individual and Continental Freedom

Een lezing door Alberto Alemanno. Met medewerking van: het Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES).

“Zijn wij als Europeanen werkelijk vrij?”

De schokken van Trumps dwang en Poetins agressie hebben een ongemakkelijk antwoord opgeleverd: we zijn aanzienlijk minder vrij dan we dachten. Maar er is ook iets bijzonders gebeurd. Voor het eerst hebben Europeanen de moed om Europa op te eisen als een politieke ruimte die hun eigen levenskansen definieert.

De kloof tussen de groeiende vraag naar pan-Europese actie en de verlamming van nationale leiders vormt wellicht dé politieke kans voor de huidige generaties. Alberto Alemanno, Jean Monnet Professor aan HEC Paris, gaat in op wat er nodig is om deze kans te grijpen. Na de lezing is er gelegenheid om na te praten tijdens de borrel.

The gap between mounting public demand for pan-European action and the paralysis of national leaders might be the defining political opportunity for at least two generations. Alberto Alemanno, Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law at HEC Paris, joins us to discuss what seizing that opportunity would require. The lecture will be followed by drinks.

“Zijn wij als Europeanen werkelijk vrij?”

De schokken van Trumps dwang en Poetins agressie hebben een ongemakkelijk antwoord opgeleverd: we zijn aanzienlijk minder vrij dan we dachten. Maar er is ook iets bijzonders gebeurd. Voor het eerst hebben Europeanen de moed om Europa op te eisen als een politieke ruimte die hun eigen levenskansen definieert.

De kloof tussen de groeiende vraag naar pan-Europese actie en de verlamming van nationale leiders vormt wellicht dé politieke kans voor de huidige generaties. Alberto Alemanno, Jean Monnet Professor aan HEC Paris, gaat in op wat er nodig is om deze kans te grijpen. Na de lezing is er gelegenheid om na te praten tijdens de borrel.
