“Club Up Amsterdam is one of the city’s hidden gems, located close to the Leidseplein. Since first opened its doors in 2008, Club Up Amsterdam has been and continues to be, a popular club amongst a wide audience. Everyone loves this place!” - Amsterdam Nightlife

The origin story of this club is quite special. In 1922, there was an artists’ society (members club) established in the building. People could come together here to enjoy music, talk about art and meet other artists. But, due to fire regulations and safety, the location of the society needed an emergency exit. There was no place to install this extra exit, but fortunately, there was another building behind one of the societies that had exactly the exit door that was necessary to keep the location open. This second building was turned into Club Up! Nowadays, the artists’ society still exists, and on some of the club evenings, you can visit this place called ‘ De Kring’ (‘The Circle’ in English).

Another fun fact about Club Up is the meaning behind the name. It is called ‘Up’ because no matter what entrance you take, you will always have to climb upstairs.
