Tijdens het Nederlands Theater Festival kun je van 4 tot en met 14 september, 11 dagen lang in 12 theaters in Amsterdam, de mooiste, meest indrukwekkende voorstellingen zien van het seizoen. Speciaal voor jou geselecteerd door 7 vakjury’s: toneel, cabaret, jeugdtheater, mime, performance, nieuwe makers en meer.  

Dit jaar is het thema Art is Power. Een uitnodiging tot luisteren, kijken en geraakt worden. Een leus die continu vraagt om verschillende perspectieven en bedenkingen over de wereld. Kunst kan verdelen, ja, maar vooral verbinden. Ze kan misbruikt worden, maar ook ruimte bieden aan stemmen die anders niet gehoord worden. Op het festival zie je makers die de status quo bevragen, machtsstructuren ontleden en tegelijkertijd de schoonheid van het leven bezingen. 

Ook de Brakke Grond opent dit jaar weer zijn deuren voor het Nederlands Theater Festival: je ontdekt hier Haribo Kimchi van Jaha Koo / CAMPO en My Body as a Commodity van Anne-Laure Vandeputte.

Amsterdam Fringe Festival toont ieder jaar in september 11 dagen lang een mixmash van theater, performance en dans van nieuw, opkomend en ongetemd talent.

We presenteren een multidisciplinair programma van ruim 54 makers/ groepen, met uiteenlopende achtergronden, herkomsten en toekomsten. Ons showcasefestival is een vrijhaven voor experiment en biedt een podium aan nieuwe makers en verhalen. Amsterdam Fringe Festival is een ode aan de theatrale gekte, de onafhankelijke geest en een pleidooi voor artistieke vrijheid. Een dikke, innige omhelzing van het experiment in de ware zin des woords: eentje waarvan de uitkomst je nog echt verrassen kan.

De hele stad is onze speelplaats; van tuin tot bar tot theater, van Noord tot Zuid, je vindt ons 11 dagen lang op zo’n 22 locaties verspreid over heel Amsterdam.

Ook de Brakke Grond opent dit jaar weer zijn deuren voor Amsterdam Fringe Festival. Je ontdekt hier maar liefst zeven voorstellingen van nieuwe makers.

Amsterdam Fringe Festival

With the support of De Brakke Grond, Nikima Jagudajev and collaborator Laura Stellacci will work on developing their clothing line, Arcane Clothing, for a new work called Whatever, and will continue to collect "doodles" on a massive quilt inspired by the concept of the world map in video games; a graphical representation of the game world that provides players with an overview of the layout and structure of the game environment. Eventually, the plan is to invite SNDO students into the studio to partake in various structured conversations surrounding the construction, disruption, demise and reconstruction of space. "As we hang out and discuss, Laura and I will invite our guests to embroider their initials, a tag, a small drawing or message; drawing our map into existence. These doodles are called ‘grandma’s tattoos’ and are inspired by the notes we used to etch into the bathroom stalls at school and the doodles we left in the margins of each other's notebooks."

Space is configured through repetition; gestures and postures inscribe space with homogenized expectations. Conversely, sitting on the same ground together and sewing pieces of fabric together or doodling ideas, notes, drawings on one big quilt etches a different storyline into our material world. These small playful acts are a source of delight and interrogation as we exercise our immediate impact on the world. In a context where our ability to exercise power is siphoned from us in whatever way possible, these simple acts become meaningful; a worldbuilding practice in which we are collectively stitching our own landscape into existence, what will it look like?

BANKET is terug! Op vrijdag 19 september gooien we de deuren van ons huis weer wagenwijd open om het nieuwe Brakke Grond seizoen feestelijk te openen. Met op het programma onder andere een dansvoorstelling over levensdrift en dans als vorm van verzet, een kijkje achter de schermen bij een van onze residenten en uiteraard een banket in de vorm van een eetbare installatie.

Centraal binnen BANKET staat dit jaar de voorstelling Badke(remix) van laGeste en Stereo48. Deze voorstelling is een herwerking van de dansvoorstelling Badke met 10 Palestijnse dansers die tussen 2013 en 2016 wereldwijd toerde. De heruitgave van Badke komt nu artistiek in Palestijnse handen, met name van Amir Sabra en Ata Khatab, en wordt Badke(remix). Uitgangspunt voor deze voorstelling is de dabke, een traditionele volksdans uit de Levant die traditioneel is voorbehouden voor (huwelijks)feesten. Badke(remix) etaleert levensdrift en danslust als een vorm van verzet. Na de voorstelling staan de dansers en makers het publiek te woord tijdens een nagesprek.

We starten de avond met Brussels transdisciplinair maker en DJ M I M I, die ons BANKET zal openen met een Sound Ceremony. Kunstenaar en choreograaf Nikima Jagudajev - die twee weken lang in residentie is in ons huis - opent de deuren van hun werkplek zodat je een glimp kan opvangen van hun werkproces. Het Amsterdams culinair collectief Maison Dante zorgt voor een eetbare installatie met traditioneel Midden-Oosters brood. Én we lanceren vol trots ons gloednieuw Brakke Grond magazine! Deze feestelijke openingsavond sluiten we uiteraard af met een drankje en een dansje.

BANKET

A remix is ​​an edited version of an existing song. Badke(remix) is a remake of the dance performance with 10 Palestinian dancers that toured worldwide between 2013 and 2016, created by Koen Augustijnen, Rosalba Torres and Hildegard De Vuyst. The reissue of Badke is now artistically in Palestinian hands, namely Amir Sabra and Ata Khatab, and becomes Badke(remix).

The title is a conscious reversal of dabke, the name of the Palestinian folk dance and the starting point of the performance. With backgrounds in traditional dabke, contemporary dance, hip-hop, capoeira or circus, the Palestinian performers bring a contemporary version of this dance that is traditionally reserved for (wedding) parties. Badke(remix) displays a zest for life and passion for dancing as a form of resistance.

In Badke(remix), a contemporary version of the vernacular, non-academic variety is chosen, an explosion of joy, a lively physical expression that speaks of connection, an affirmation of belonging somewhere. This kind of collective physicality is hardly encountered in contemporary dance with its emphasis on individuality and reflection. At the heart of the 'social' dabke is something unique that Palestinian dancers can proudly show off to the rest of the world.

We spreken vaak over intergenerationeel trauma, maar is er meer? Waarom hebben we intergenerationaliteit enkel tot het trauma beperkt? Als herinneringen van pijn generatieslang in ons lichaam opgeslagen blijven, bestaat er dan ook zoiets als intergenerationele troost die doorgegeven wordt?

Is één leven genoeg om weer heel te zijn? Ja. In een daverende monoloog die verder bouwt op de roman Half Leven kruisen intimiteit en universaliteit. Sabi & Mahammed volgen Shams terwijl ze kritisch reflecteert over de grote vragen, maar ook terwijl ze - heel eenvoudig - een sjaal koopt. We moeten aan de pijn raken, maar gaan ook verder. Intergenerationele troost: een overerfbaar gevoel van veiligheid en vertrouwen.

Tijdens deze residentie wil De Craene op zoek gaan naar de manier waarop grote thema's des levens vorm krijgen in verschillende muzikale tradities. Hoe maken we met elk onze eigen muziek, instrumenten en cultuur ruimte voor spiritualiteit, beleving en connectie? Kunnen we, los van de verschillen in de muziek, een gemeenschappelijk geconstrueerd klankenpalet maken om deze thematieken in te vertalen? Voor dit onderzoek focust De Craene zich op Gnawa: een Noord-Afrikaanse spirituele en muzikale traditie die bekend staat om zijn trance-opwekkende ritmes en spirituele zang.

Daarnaast combineert De Craene dit onderzoek met de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe experimentele live show waarin saxofoon en electronica samenkomen.

In the run-up to the premiere of Kidnapped – Frames of a Contemporary Landscape, theatre maker Rodrigo Batista, together with performer and co-creator Mariana Senne, is working on the final technical, dramaturgical and scenic refinements at De Brakke Grond.  
Kidnapped – Frames of a Contemporary Landscape is a poignant and surprising theatre production that takes a close look at our times. What if the world we live in is actually a shared political hallucination – shaped by neoliberal ideas, colonial legacies and a system that makes us believe that there is “no alternative”?  
Using the metaphor of a kidnapping, Kidnapped shows how our choices – cultural, political and personal – are often driven by market interests and identity struggles, without the underlying power structures ever really being shaken.

The residency is the final phase of the artistic process. Rodrigo Batista works according to a self-developed methodology in three steps:  
- Brainwashing: a collective immersion in philosophical, political and historical sources;  
- Cannibal Lab: a creative “digestion” of this material through improvisation and deconstruction;  
- Word Becomes Flesh: what remains – voice, gesture, presence – takes shape in the final performance.

During this week, the complexity of the performance is translated into a clear but deliberately overwhelming scenic language: refining camera registration, balancing live and recorded images, and sharpening rhythm and space.

In Kidnapped, excess is not a mistake, but an artistic choice. The chaos, contradiction and oversaturation on stage reflect a world that already feels incoherent and unbearable. This residency helps to make that world tangible – not to solve it, but to face it without a filter.

Scarlet Tummers zet de eerste stappen in het creatieproces van DIDION, een voorstelling geïnspireerd op de cultfiguur Joan Didion (1934–2021).

“Life changes fast.
Life changes in an instant.
You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends.
The question of self-pity.”
Joan Didion werd wereldberoemd met bestsellers als The Year of Magical Thinking en Blue Nights, waarin ze met radicale openheid schrijft over rouw, nadat ze in korte tijd zowel haar man als haar dochter verliest. Als icoon van de jaren zestig en inspiratiebron voor talloze vrouwelijke schrijvers voldeed Didion, met haar autobiografische toon én scherpe analytische blik, niet aan het clichébeeld van de vrouwelijke schrijver. Op de omslagen van haar boeken staat ze steevast tegen een auto geleund, zonnebril op, sigaret in de hand — cool as fuck. Ze is mysterieus, die dunne, fragiele vrouw die bijna verdwijnt achter haar grote zonnebril.

In haar werk focust Didion op het verhaal van het verhaal. Ze creëert én ontmantelt. Ze laat ons zien dat elk narratief een constructie is — en dat die constructie ons meer vertelt over onszelf en onze tijd dan het verhaal zelf.

DIDION wordt een voorstelling over een dochter die haar moeder observeert, haar naspeelt en misschien, soms, wordt.
Met de afstand van de blik van het kind, maar bij momenten ook samenvallend met de positie van de moeder, een rol die Scarlet inmiddels ook in het echte leven vervult. DIDION is een onderzoek naar rouw en tegelijk een portret van een vrouw die creëert, het persoonlijke politiek probeert te maken en zoekt naar haar eigen stem.

“I tell you this not as aimless revelation but because I want you to know,
as you read me,
precisely who I am and where I am and what is on my mind.
I want you to understand exactly what you are getting:
you are getting a woman who for some time now has felt radically separated from most of the ideas that seem to interest people.
You are getting a woman who somewhere along the line misplaced whatever slight faith she ever had in the social contract,
in the meliorative principle,
in the whole grand pattern of human endeavor.”

Kidnapped – Frames of a contemporary landscape interrogates an assumed shared political hallucination — meticulously shaped by neoliberal logic, colonial legacies, and a capitalist realism that proclaims “there is no alternative". The piece uses the metaphor of kidnapping to reveal how our cultural, political, and personal choices are confined by market imperatives and identity struggles that rarely disrupt power structures. In the performance, two characters, Terror and Compassion, treat (and threaten) the audience as “kidnapped children”, transitioning from a childlike theater format to sinister political revelations through a spiral dramaturgy that disrupts linear time. By channeling historical “guests/ghosts” — from figures like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan to icons such as Michael Jackson and Pier Paolo Pasolini — the piece exposes the roots of our systemic captivity while inviting spectators to reclaim their agency. Ultimately, Kidnapped transforms abstract political despair into a visceral and collective call to reflect, resist, and challenge the forces that hold us captive.

Kidnapped - Frames of a contemporary landscape

Louis Janssens

For the performance Family, theatre maker Louis Janssens has invited four performers from different generations to join him on stage. Together, they share stories, ask questions, and seek comfort, support, and recognition in one another. The piece explores how family ties connect us and how they inevitably shape our lives — touching on both blood relatives and chosen families. It is about parents, children, growing up, and the fear of being left behind. The performers appear on stage as themselves, but over the course of the performance, they increasingly seem to become each other’s family.

Family is a poetic and relatable text-based performance about the universal concept of family. Starting from a queer perspective, they tell a broader human story about having — and searching for — a family. Not everyone has children, but in the end, we are all someone’s child.

Over the past few years, Louis Janssens created the solo performance Serenade (#newyoung, TheaterFestival 2021), the duet Analoog with Willem de Wolf (TheaterFestival and Nederlands Theaterfestival 2023), and Desire (TheaterFestival 2024). He now presents Family, a performance created together with an intergenerational queer cast featuring Peter Seynaeve (NTGent, Het Zuidelijk Toneel), Maureen Teeuwen (Maatschappij Discordia, mugmetdegoudentand), Mourad Baaiz (Artemis/hetpaleis/Het Zuidelijk Toneel, Schauspielhaus Bochum), and Francis Geeraert (Compagnie Barbarie).
