Joe Magnarelli Tribute To The Giants Of Jazz This international all-star-quintet brings together a top soloist of the New York scene and four of Europe’s most valuable and experienced musicians who share the same love: classic swinging straight-ahead jazz in the tradition of their idols and mentors such as Thad Jones, Kenny Dorham, Pepper Adams and Cedar Walton, the true “Giants of Jazz”. Joe Magnarelli has been one of the world’s leading trumpeters for three decades. He graduated from SUNY-Fredonia in 1982 and moved to New York in 1986. First, he worked from 1987-89 in the Lionel Hampton Big Band and then from 1989-94 with the organist Brother Jack McDuff. In 1991 he founded the New York Hard Bop Quintet and led further own groups with John Swana and Jerry Weldon. He also worked as a sideman with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Laverne Butler, Harry Connick, Jr., the Buddy Rich Band, Maria Schneider, Grant Stewart, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Ray Barretto, and many more. https://www.joemagnarelli.com His partner in the front line is Rik van den Bergh from Rotterdam who has dedicated himself to the baritone saxophone only. His approach is rooted in the playing of Harry Carney, Leo Parker, Pepper Adams and Ronnie Cuber. He builds upon this tradition that focuses on harmony, melody, time and an overwhelming sound. As a first-call baritone saxophonist in the Netherlands, it has not gone unnoticed internationally that Rik is a specialist on his instrument. He has shared the stage with, among others, Dick Oatts, Teddy Edwards, Don Braden, Gary Smulyan, Jim Rotondi and Ronnie Cuber. He is also a highly appreciated teacher at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music. https://www.rikvandenbergh.com The rhythm section is formed by three of Europe’s most experienced and established sidemen, who have worked in various projects with many jazz legends. Rob Barron is a mainstay of the London Jazz and Studio scene and has been described as “one of the most creative and versatile musicians of his generation”. Rob has played with American artists Grant Stewart, Al Jarreau, Marlena Shaw, Patti Austin, Curtis Stigers, Benny Golson, Terrel Stafford, Phil Woods, Sheryl Bailey and in groups lead by leading UK artists Jacqui Dankworth, Stacey Kent, Claire Martin, Dave O’Higgins, Steve Fishwick, Allison Neale, Anita Wardell, Georgia Mancio and Jean Toussaint. He also leads his own trio and his latest album, From This Moment On, was released in October 2020. BBC Music Magazine featured it as one of the best jazz releases of 2020 and gave it a 5 star review citing “This is classic piano trio jazz at it’s very best.” The album has already had over 8 million plays on digital streaming platforms. Rob also appears regularly with the BBC Big Band and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. Since 2018 he has held the position of professor of jazz piano at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He became part of young jazz bands such as the Houdini’s, the Hoogendijk/Van den Dungen quintet and the Beets Brothers. In 1999 Marius gave a new boost to the Rein de Graaff trio and set for several European tours with jazz legends as Johhny Griffin, James Moody, Bud Shank, Gary Bartz and Ronnie Cuber. Marius has an impressive discography with over a hundred recordings. Featured artists are a.o.: Herb Geller, Jeff Hamilton, Deborah Brown, Rita Reys, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Peter Beets, Houston Person, Ronnie Cuber and Dave Liebman. Beets is a well know guest at large Dutch orchestras such as the Metropole Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Schoenberg Ensemble, Skymasters and the Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw. Since 1999 Marius teaches double bass jazz at Codarts, the Rotterdam Conservatory. As composer and orchestrator Marius wrote arrangements for large orchestras and ensembles s.a. Amsterdam Sinfonietta, The Stolz Quartet, Residentie Orkest en Jazzorchestra of the Concertgebouw, besides that for singers s.a.
