Piet Heinkade 3, 1019 BR Amsterdam, Nederland
Double concert with young international players giving jazz a contemporary update. International jazz talent flourishes in The Netherlands. This concert includes forward-thinking young masters from all over the world who have established themselves here, in the tight-knit trio Mn3mosyne and the adventurous quintet of vocalist Līva Dumpe. Both formations feature Ilia Rayskin, the in-demand drummer who has collaborated with Tineke Postma, Jesse van Ruller, and many others. In Greek mythology, Mnemosyne is the goddess of memory. The young trio Mn3mosyne reminisces great achievements in the past while looking ahead. Material of atonal composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina, Witold Lutosławski and Morton Feldman is re-envisioned and adapted to an improvisational environment. At the same time the band takes inspiration from musicians such as J. Cole, Squarepusher and James Blake, for example through the use of electronics. Drummer Ilia Rayskin created the compositions. Strong melodies, emotional stories and energetic improvisations are at the core of the ensemble of Latvian vocalist, pianist and composer Līva Dumpe. The connecting element is Līva’s voice and her role as storyteller. The band’s sound gravitates toward the idea of ritual and mysticism, stretching between the influences of jazz, avant-garde and folk. The instrumentation creates playful contrasts between the chamber-like orchestrations and rough, dynamic grooves. This concert previews the upcoming debut album _Tālskatis_, to be released in June.
