Filmhuis Cavia proudly presents Black. White. Red., the newest feature film by Andreas Marschall and winner of the BUTtest Feature Award 2024. The film was originally planned to be shot in St. Petersburg, Kiev and Marseille, but after delays due to the coronavirus, the Russo-Ukrainian war forced the film crew to change their plans significantly.

The protagonist of this film and club owner Chemkar lives for excess and criminal business. When the mysterious and seductive drug courier Eris brings him the brand-new designer drug FLASHBACK, the doors to long-buried memories of his childlike, innocent self are opened. Chemkar believes he has found redemption. But Eris's love does not lead to paradise, but straight to hell.

Director’s statement: For me, BWR [= Black. White. Red.] was an experiment that began as an art project and whose outcome was decisively changed by Russia's war on Ukraine. What was originally an art installation with numerous pop-culture references to the European genre cinema of the seventies and eighties turned more and more into the hellish journey of a male soul, who is tormented by the violence of a father who acts like a god of war. Influenced by the disintegration of our familiar world order, associations and stark contrasts took over the linear narrative, combining opera music with techno, childhood poetry with images of violence, dream with stark reality as if in a delirium. For me, the editing process was also like a journey whose outcome I didn't know. I hope that the viewer will also go on a journey and not see BWR as a classic narrative, but experience it like a dark dream.

GALALIVE (Egypt)

Galalalive is a sound collective and a live music band founded in 2019 by Abdo Zin Eldin. It began with recording and archiving sounds from Egypt's underworld marginalized communities, capturing the atmosphere of spiritual festivals, raves, weddings, and funerals, which are increasingly threatened by gentrification... During the COVID pandemic, it evolved into a solo electronic music project, blending contemporary and traditional Egyptian sounds. Galalalive has performed at venues like Bardo Clubhouse and Cairo Jazz Club. In 2023, it expanded into a flexible band, featuring different musicians and instruments depending on the event.

CAESO (Brazil)

Caeso aka Carlos Eduardo Soares is a musician and sound artist with a diverse creative output, exploring mediums such as acousmatic music, live electronics, free improvisation and also traditional written composition, besides building sound sculptures, videos and other multimedia artworks. Holds both a bachelor's and a master's degree in Music Composition, and is currently a docARTES PhD candidate (Orpheus Institute/Leiden University) on artistic research in Music with interest for the poetics of negativity and creative uses of DIY practices. His collaborations with other artists range from soundtracks, sound design and soundscapes to more technical development in digital and analog media. Currently lives and works in The Netherlands.

enWIREment 3 – the current experience!

EN | Join animator and director Juliana Erazo for an afternoon of discussion (in English) on the tender and complex subject of motherhood through the lens of her animated documentary project that has been in the making since 2022.  

There will be a short preview of the film, a Q&A with one of the film's interviewees, and an exhibition to launch of the Unlearning Motherhood podcast.  

Unlearning Motherhood is an animated documentary that tells the stories of 6 cis and transgender women, and their experiences with what could be considered an unconventional motherhood. The film makes use of the fictional story of Dolores, the main character, as a read thread to connect the testimonials together.  

Argelia, Luba, Sarah, Marcia, Guendalina and Vicky tell their experiences with postpartum depression, being child-free, adoption, abortion, and transgender motherhood. Their real-life stories illustrate how diverse motherhood really is, and ultimately invite the audience to come together and re-think its standards.  

This film, produced by Valk Productions, has been awarded grants by the AFK, NL Filmfonds, Stimuleringsfonds and Playgrounds Next, and it is currently in the final stages of production.

Unlearning Motherhood is een geanimeerde documentaire die de verhalen vertelt van 6 cis- en transvrouwen en hun ervaringen met wat beschouwd kan worden als onconventioneel moederschap. De film maakt gebruik van het fictieve verhaal van Dolores, het hoofdpersonage, als een rode draad om de getuigenissen met elkaar te verbinden.  

Argelia, Luba, Sarah, Marcia, Guendalina en Vicky vertellen hun ervaringen met postnatale depressie, kindvrij zijn, adoptie, abortus en transgender moederschap. 2.Dh5 (https://www.2dh5.nl) returns to Cavia for their upcoming festival which will be held from 23 - 25 February. It's an annual festival for the exchange of radical ideas, strategies and practices by grassroots groups, collective projects and direct action campaigns in the Netherlands and beyond.

For the second film night, 2.Dh5 collaborates with Reclaim the Seeds (https://reclaimtheseeds-amsterdam.nl) to screen a film of Jumana Manna, a visual artist and filmmaker, to recognise intersections and struggles in relation to colonial inheritances and histories of place.


WILD RELATIVES

Deep in the earth beneath the Arctic permafrost, seeds from all over the world are stored in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault to provide a backup should a disaster strike. Wild Relatives starts from an event that has sparked media interest worldwide: in 2012 an international agricultural research center was forced to relocate from Aleppo to Lebanon due to the Syrian Revolution turned war, and began a laborious process of planting their seed collection from the Svalbard back-ups. Following the path of this transaction of seeds between the Arctic and Lebanon, a series of encounters unfold a matrix of human and non-human lives between these two distant spots of the earth. It captures the articulation between this large-scale international initiative and its local implementation in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, carried out primarily by young migrant women. The meditative pace patiently teases out tensions between state and individual, industrial and organic approaches to seed saving, climate change and biodiversity, witnessed through the journey of these seeds.

SEX... IN THE CITY?
A main focus of the inaugural Porn Film Festival Amsterdam is to engage in a dialogue with the city. Specifically, in this segment, the aim is to explore the concept of the city as a space for sexual freedom. How are sex and freedom taking place under blatant gentrification? Amsterdam is facing a housing crisis that affects many people. But when gentrification affects sex workers in the historic Red Light District, it happens as part of a moralistic project that wants sex to be marginalised from society. This  selection of films places sex in the city to contest patriarchy, capitalism, colonialism, and the police brutality that shields them all.

After the films, we will have a conversation with local activists and sex workers fighting against the gentrification of the Red Light District, and the project of marginalizing sex work even more through the construction of a centre for prostitution on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

Kissable Screens: L.A Zombies

This documentary tells about the colorful and cheerful history of the Amsterdam Ship of Fools, which sailed around the world for more than 30 years to bring theatre, joy and folly. At the helm is the creator of this sailing work of art: captain and actor August Dirks, who lived and worked on the Azart for more than 30 years. Amsterdam's Azartplein is named after this fool's boat. Captain August wanted to sail the VOC route, he said, but in a different way. “Not to steal and kill, but to play and share.” Now stranded – literally – on a South American beach, where the wonderful story continues, led by a local theater group.

Captain August will be present and questions can be asked to him after the film. The photo book AZART De Blauwe Schuit and film posters will be for sale this evening and can be signed by Captain August.

Kawa Nemir is like a walking dictionary of Kurdish language. Whenever he hears a new word or an idiom, he records it and he never forgets. Considering the Kurdish language his home, he wanders from one exile to another. But how to transfer this collective memory into paper? With its vast, infinite range of words, symbols and anti-colonial resonance, James Joyce’s Ulysses becomes an obsession for him. A translation that would incapsulate all the Kurdish words and idioms he collected throughout the years. Exhausted from political prosecutions and language ban, he flees Turkey and takes refuge at Anne Frank’s former house in Amsterdam, now serving as residence for exiled writers. Will he be able to finish the translation of Ulysses and publish it?
