Ajay Saggar is BHAJAN BHOY. Since beginning in 2020, he has released 6 albums, and will release a new LP on 14 February 2025. He has toured the USA twice, the UK 3 times, and played shows throughout Europe. He has done radio sessions for WFMU, KALX, BBC, KSPC, WGXC. He is also a member of Water Damage, and CHELA.

“With BHAJAN BHOY, Saggar synthesizes all of the stylistic approaches he’s explored over the years, swirling them into an intoxicating musical blend, with an earthy spirituality. Even the project’s name reflects the dual aspects of Saggar’s upbringing coming together in harmony. In Hindi, a “bhajan” is a devotional song, sung in the mandir, or temple, while “bhoy” is a Scottish and Irish derivation for a young man. Charnel Ground presents: John Wiese (US), Secret(e), Hesker & Thom Floris – An evening of noise, musique concrete & digital cut-up.

John Wiese (US) is an artist and composer from Los Angeles, California. His ongoing projects include LHD and Sissy Spacek, but is known for his collaborations with many artists as diverse as Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Merzbow, Aaron Dilloway, Smegma, Kevin Drumm, Cattle Decapitation, and C. Spencer Yeh as well as his work as a solo artist. He has toured extensively throughout the world, covering Europe, Scandinavia and Australia as a member of Sunn O))), the UK as part of the Free Noise tour (a tentet including Evan Parker, C. Spencer Yeh, Yellow Swans, etc.), the United States alongside Wolf Eyes, and recently performed in the 52nd Venice Biennale with artist Nico Vascellari. While releasing albums on a variety of international labels, Wiese often releases work on his own label, Helicopter.

Secret(e) is Kevin Jansen (Svartvit, Coma Cluster, etc..) is an sound artist based in Den Haag, NL. Exploring the boundaries of sound & performance since 2009. Especially interested in the inner-world of objects & bodies, brought to the surface through contact microphones & extreme amplification. Sculpting corporeal sonic landscapes that pulsate with raw intensity. Through extensive manipulation acoustic sounds are held captive in the liminal space between their point of origin & grotesque indecipherable slabs of distortion.

Hesker is a raw, analog exploration of sonic abrasion, utilising archaic tape machinery to distort and fracture reality.

Thom Floris is an experimental sound artist, his process mainly involves sampling memetic tropes and utilizing further DSP (Digital Signal Processing) in order to create blithering and frantic compositions.

In 1981, Dave Dictor, Al Schvitz, Mikey ‘Offender’ Donaldson, and “x-con Ron” Posner put out their first two-song single 7” as The Stains. Shortly afterwards, they were duly christened Millions of Dead Cops by Buxf Parrot, the hardcore bass player of The Dicks. And the rest, as they say, is history…

M.D.C. is a musical and political organization always striving to make intelligent, powerful, political statements that scream loudly against political insanity and social malignancy, addressing oppression and the human condition. Their originality challenges and often rivals, with their distinctly blunt and radical views, some of the most iconic bands of the past-and-present punk scene often littered with meaningless personal topical babble.

M.D.C. undoubtedly influenced many bands of today, evident in many modern anti-government and anti-oppression oriented groups, as early American Punk folklore blazoned its course through the past 44 years. M.D.C. was on the cover of the FIRST issue of Maximum Rock’n’Roll, which also includes a band interview. They have had major articles in Playboy, Spin, Sounds, and interviews far too numerous to count in local papers and fanzines across the globe. As an integral part of early American Punk folklore, it is not surprising to find references to M.D.C. in the annals of punk history and beyond the boundaries of mainstream music culture–their honourable mention in the alternative duo They Might Be Giants’ song “Rhythm Section Want Ad” and the “Millions of Dead Cops” album ranking #7 on Kurt Cobain’s all-time favourite list are two interesting examples.

Barackca were formed in 1993 in Budapest. Political songs already appeared in their early years alongside with the satirical ones. They self-published a total of 8 albums. They had over 900 concerts in 29 European and 4 Asian countries.

In their songs they often criticize capitalism, point out social problems, and they hold racism, National Socialism and every repressive authority unacceptable.

Their music is a mix of Hungarian punk style with US hardcore/punk and anarcho mentality.

Since we are all simultaneously yelling how unique we are, I decided to rename myself Plastic Persoon. An Avant Gabber act consisting of Sob (45ACIDBABIES, FFOOSS) and Juna (Imhotel, Gita Buhari). Both brutally loud and relatable to people who want change. Kicking against the status quo every minute of every day is exhausting. Plastic Persoon is a coping mechanism.

To celebrate 20 years of DNK we are organising some special events through the year. The first of these is at Willem de Zwijgerkerk with the support of Occii.

We have invited the inimitable Alasdair Roberts in duo with a new DNK favourite Fredrik Rasten. DNK Ensemble will play works by Koen Nutters and Seamus Cater. All happening in this beautiful and little known church close to the Vondelpark in Amsterdam Zuid.

The Scottish/Norwegian duo of Alasdair Roberts and Fredrik Rasten fuses their respective work with traditional music, folk song and experimental minimalism. Their first encounter was in the septet ‘Alasdair Roberts og Völvur’, which released the LP «The Old Fabled River» on Drag City Records in 2021, featuring Roberts-originals and a blend of Scottish and Norwegian traditional songs. In duo, Roberts and Rasten have so far focussed on traditional Scottish narrative ballads, often with long durations, and where slowly evolving musical materials build up throughout the strophic verse-structure to emphasise the storytelling.

The duo employs both field recordings and printed sources of traditional song as the basis of their interpretations, often evolving new original compositions and always resulting in a meeting point between time-honoured and contemporary forms of musical expression. Both musicians sing and play a variety of instruments, Roberts’ clear and unadorned vocal delivery blending with Rasten’s sensibilities of just intonation tuning and timbrel qualities of sound.

Benzin (DE)

Berlin’s Benzin brings us a blistering barrage of blazing beats and breakneck bursts of brio on Treibjagd, their debut vinyl for Static Age Musik. While Benzin rips through their songs at hardcore tempos (Treibjagd’s 12 songs fly by in a mere 15 minutes), they’re a punk rock band at heart, with songs built around hooky riffs with eruptions of surf-tinged melody a la East Bay Ray from the Dead Kennedys. But while both the songs and the dry, punchy production recall proto-hardcore punk from the US west coast, the vocalist’s German-language speak-singing infuses Benzin’s sound with the icy cool of their country’s rich art-punk tradition

(Bärchen und die Milchbubis). Songs range from the spiky minimalism of “Freundschaft” (which sounds like a long-lost Group Sex outtake) and “Traumaspirale” to more fleshed-out, garage-y tracks like “Zeichen Der Zeit” and “Treibjagd,” whose sassy, hip-swinging rhythms and big riffs could win over any Hives fan. Aficionados of artsy and agitated contemporary punk bands like Warm Bodies and Spread Joy are bound to fall for Benzin’s charms, but Treibjagd is a treat for any punker with an ear for a hyperactive hook. OCCII is an independent music venue. Situated in a building complex which was squatted in 1984, legalized in 1992. OCCII has since developed into a unique social centre for alternative music and other arts. 
 
OCCII provides a cultural program that is hand-picked for those drawn to a wonderful and wide range of subversive sounds and music genres: global beats, noise, punk, folk, improv, rave, avant-garde & electronic.
 
OCCII is not in it to make profit. We aim to be a home to all kinds of subcultures and non-commercial collaborations. At OCCII we want to create a space where all feel welcome and safe(r), regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, ability, sexuality or otherwise. Our venue is wheelchair accessible.
 
In addition to live music, OCCII also hosts Kinderpret: a series of Tuesday & Wednesday afternoon theatre performances and workshops for kids aged 2-12 years. OCCII is part of De Binnenpret, a social center consisting of a variety of cultural and political collectives.

COMMUNITY

We are part of a community of musicians, artists and audience from Amsterdam and beyond: an active group of volunteers to connect music, people and other venues in the city.

This community and our volunteers are the ones that continuously bring new music and new developments to OCCII. Many of them are not native Amsterdammers. OCCII has a staff of two who coordinate the program, volunteers and other tasks needed. Together we try to contribute to creating space we think is crucial to the social fabric of Amsterdam. To (re)claim a place in the ever gentrifying city center and to continue our radical, non-commercial way of hosting musicians from all over the world.

THE BUILDING’S ARCHITECTURE

People often ask us: What is the story behind the eclectic facade of OCCII? The venue was once part of a larger complex (built in 1883/84) which functioned as horse stables and a depot for trams – that’s why OCCII’s main entrance has such tall doors! The architect was Abraham Salm, he based his design on the Russian National Style, inspired by a painting of a clock made by Viktor Hartman.

For many years, the facade was in disarray (very punk..!). In 2010 we were able to restore the exterior facade to its beautiful original state, with help from Monument Zorg and OCCII volunteers!

Other significant buildings in Amsterdam designed by Abraham Salm and his father G.B. Salm are (what we now know as): Paradiso and de Melkweg. It’s a wonder that all three buildings have transformed into the most important venues for live music – and the squatting movement in Amsterdam is to thank for that.
