Genre: Academy Open: 20:00 - 22:00 hrs Tickets: € Free Dutch below In May and June this year the first three meetings of the Amsterdam Alternative Academy (AAA) took place. This is a low-threshold initiative of Amsterdam Alternative, to discuss one or more texts collectively and in a cooperative, intersectional and anti-capitalist atmosphere, based on a theme. Before the summer, that theme was the question of whether there is life after capitalism, guided by Mark Fisher’s book Capitalist Realism. This fall we will continue the sessions of the AAA in the OT301, every Wednesday evening, with a frequency of once every two or three weeks. We will start on September 21 with a discussion of a chapter from the book Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire, on how to design a space for collective learning. This is an attempt to make the design of the AAA a little less messy, and a little more participatory and emancipatory. On October 12 we will discuss how we can still save the climate, based on Andreas Malm’s book Eco-sabotage, the Dutch translation of his How to blow up a pipeline. And the last two meetings, on November 23 and December 7, will be devoted to the question of what a feminist anti-capitalism could look like. For this we will use the book Feminism for the 99% (published by Verso and not yet translated), and possibly also Philosophical Trends in Feminism by Anuradha Ghandy. The evenings start at 8 pm and are free to all. The language of discussion will be English, but we will probably work with breakup groups, of which at least one will be in Dutch. On request, the texts to be discussed will be sent in advance as pdf files, in English and Dutch. On the evenings themselves A4 sheets are available with a short description of the theme and a number of discussion points, also in English and Dutch. Dit is een laagdrempelig initiatief van Amsterdam Alternative, om in groepsverband en in een coöperatieve, intersectionele en anti-kapitalistische sfeer een of meer teksten te bespreken, aan de hand van een thema. Vóór de zomer was dat thema de vraag of er nog leven is na het kapitalisme, met als leidraad het boek Kapitalistisch realisme van Mark Fisher. Dit najaar vervolgen wij de sessies van de AAA in de OT301, telkens op de woensdagavond, met een frequentie van eens in de twee of drie weken. We beginnen op 21 september met de bespreking van een hoofdstuk uit het boek Pedagogie van de Onderdrukten van Paulo Freire, over de vraag hoe je een ruimte voor collectief leren kunt inrichten. Dit is een poging om de opzet van de AAA wat minder rommelig, en wat meer participatoir en emancipatoir te maken. Op 12 oktober gaan we het dan hebben over hoe we alsnog het klimaat kunnen redden, op basis van het boek Eco-sabotage van Andreas Malm, de Nederlandse vertaling van zijn How to blow up a pipeline. En de laatste twee bijeenkomsten, op 23 november en 7 december, zullen gewijd zijn aan het vraagstuk hoe een feministisch anti-kapitalisme eruit zou kunnen zien, Daarvoor gebruiken we het boek Feminism for the 99% (verschenen bij Verso en nog niet vertaald), en wellicht ook Philosophical Trends in Feminism van Anuradha Ghandy. De avonden beginnen telkens om 20 uur en zijn vrij toegankelijk voor iedereen. De voertaal is Engels, maar waarschijnlijk gaan we werken met breakup groups, waarvan er minimaal één Nederlandstalig zal zijn. Op verzoek worden de te bespreken teksten van te voren als pdf toegezonden, in het Engels en Nederlands. Op de avonden zelf zijn A4tjes verkrijgbaar met een korte beschrijving van het thema en een aantal discussiepunten, eveneens in het Engels en Nederlands.
