On the 19th of June we’re hosting our next queer speed dating event at Kriterion to help you find your perfect match in record time. Your hosts, Iona Smith and Jackie van Gemert will guide your romantic journey and pair you with a selection of Amsterdam’s local hotties. 
To help you ease off the second date stress, we are hosting a movie screening at the venue, so you can go on your second date straight away! The movie will be screened at 21.00 for both rounds, so don't be late!  

In this edition, a few lucky matches will win a second date- on us. More details to follow... Better get a ticket to experience it for yourself.

Dai Miyamoto's life is turned upside down the day he discovers jazz. Dai, a former high school basketball player, picks up a saxophone and begins practicing day and night, determined to become one of the best of all time. He leaves his dull hometown to go to the bustling nightclubs of Tokyo, but soon discovers that the life of a professional musician is not for cowards. His passion eventually wins out over the arrogant but talented pianist Yukinori, and after Dai persuades his friend Shunji to learn to play drums, they start a new jazz trio whose rugged sound contains a raw energy that soon attracts the attention of local audiences. But what does it take to be truly great?

Deze film speelt zich af in een dystopische wereld, waar de druk om een partner te vinden nog groter is dan in onze wereld. Het is er niet toegestaan om single door het leven te gaan. Doe je dat wel, dan wordt je opgepakt en vervoerd naar The Hotel. Hier krijg je 45 dagen de tijd om een partner te vinden. Lukt dat niet, dan wordt je verandert in een dier en losgelaten in het Bos. Daar verschuilen zich ook de Loners, waar hoofdpersoon David zich bij aansluit wanneer hij dreigt te falen in het vinden van de ware liefde.

Schmutz Cinema comes to Kriterion with an edition that will bring some much needed heat. Fan your fannies during this Summer Squirt special, featuring a variety of sloshing bodies, gender identities and sexual preferences. Displayed on a penis-shaped floaty of cinematographic creativity. 

Schmutz Cinema will be dishing up six short films to inspire your wettest erotic fantasies. The filmmaker’s line-up includes Maximum Skaff for Erika Lust, Lina Bembe, Hannah Schaich, Joaquin Wall & Yero and a very special graduation piece from cuties at the HKU. In addition, we invite the sensual sensation Bnice to perform sexy poetry.

There’s a whole universe of erotic content: some good, some bad, some meh. Schmutz Cinema knows excellent porn, and we love to share. Join us in celebrating intimacy and pleasure as essential to our mental and physical well-being.

Schmutz Cinema: Summer Squirt 

On Jan. 28, it's time for another tête-à-tête. This time on the theme of "Diverse forms of activism. We will screen the documentary "Breaking Social," directed by Fredrik Gertten, with the animated short film "WORD!" by Amos Mulder beforehand. After the screening (19:20) there will be a free accessible conversation in the foyer with Pippi van Ommen (initiator and organizer for deep canvassing and environmental justice advocate), Daan Dorr (co-founder De Sering), Maud (Asian Raisins). The conversation will be moderated by freelance film producer and curator Yara Yuri Safadi. Food will be served by public space De Sering. 

The tête-à-tête: a get-together between two films and their makers. A monthly program created in collaboration with documentary distributor CineDeli and De Ontmoeting, a platform that gives new makers the chance to further develop their ideas by bringing them into contact with established parties in the industry. Always with a special event that accompanies the screenings, such as music, a lecture or a workshop.

Breaking Social 

Societies are based on the idea of a social contract. Work hard, treat each other with respect, play by the rules and you will be rewarded. But the reality is different. Profits are funneled through tax havens and land is drilled empty without society getting anything in return.

In the hopeful documentary Breaking Social, Fredrik Gertten (Push, Bikes vs. Cars) looks at the global patterns of kleptocracy and land clearing. From a murdered investigative journalist in Malta to a waterless river in Chile. But the tipping point has been reached. Activists worldwide are rising up against social inequality and corruption. Their inspiring stories are interspersed with reflections by authors Rutger Bregman and Sarah Chayes.

Can the tide be turned? Breaking Social is a film that makes us reflect on the building blocks of our society and tries to plant a seed of hope in each of us.

WORD!

This animated short is a visual exploration of language in an alternate, post-factual universe. Quotes in the form of tweets by famous philosophers and writers appear throughout the film. Between the evocative urban scenarios that unfolds, the viewer is invited on a seven-minute cinematic journey that interrogates our indissoluble relationship with words.

Tête-à-tête | Diverse forms of activism

John Smith’s films are renowned for their formal ingenuity, subversive wit and oblique storytelling. Over the past 50 years he has created a wide variety of film, video and installation works that have been shown in independent cinemas and art galleries around the world and awarded major prizes at many international film festivals. In 2013 he was the winner of the UK’s prestigious Jarman Award, which celebrates the spirit of experimentation, imagination and innovation in the work of artist filmmakers. John Smith’s films are in the collections of Tate Gallery, Arts Council England and MoMA New York, amongst many others. Retrospectives of his work have been presented at international film festivals in 16countries.

On 1, 2 and 3 december Kriterion Amsterdam will host three screenings where John Smith will be present for a Q&A with the audience afterwards.

Expect your senses to be blown wide open in Kriterion during ADE. From October 19 until October 21 we present to you a special program with films, music and audiovisual performances. Thursday we start off with the incredible untold story of female electronic music pioneers ‘Sisters with Transistors’. Later in the night there will be an audiovisual performance by Pouya Ehsaei and Tormoz. Friday we will explore Afrofuturism on a night organized by the @cpt.collective, ‘Welcome to Afrofuturism’. Saturday we wrap it up with Music For The Eyes (the short films ‘Dustin’ and RoXY’, followed by a Q&A) and an audiovisual performance by QUANZA and Getahun Zagai.

ADE x Kriterion | Saturday

Welcome to Afrofuturism: Space Is The Place (1974) + Drexciya (2010) + Groove God, Jaïr Darnoud (LIVE) + Sunny Saimuns (DJ set) Kriterion and CPT Collective present an evening full of film and music. The evening will be rounded off by artist Groove God, Jaïr Darnoud, who will provide an Alt-groove session. CPT Collective A collective, set up by Amsterdam natives of color, that strives for equality in the underground art and culture scene. CPT provides a platform for people of color to express themselves - authentic, raw, and disruptive. Space Is The Place (1974) - directed By Sun Ra & John Coney Sun Ra and his Solar Myth Arkestra return to Earth after several years in space. Ra proclaims himself to be “the alter-destiny” and sets out to enact his plan to use music as salvation for the black community—even battling with the devil himself to save black people from oppression. Drexciya (2010)- directed by Akosua Adoma Owusu A portrait of an abandoned public swimming facility located in Accra, Ghana set on the Riviera. The Riviera at one time was an upscale development, consisting of luxury high-rises and five star hotels. Since the 1970s, the Riviera has fallen into a disheveled state. This short documentary was inspired by afro-futurist myths propagated by the underground Detroit-based band Drexciya. They suggest that Drexciya is a mythical underwater subcontinent populated by the unborn children of African women thrown overboard during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. These children have adapted and evolved to breathe underwater. Groove God, Jaïr Darnoud (LIVE) Groove God, Jaïr Darnoud: Inventor of the Alt-Groove and a fresh new face in the electronic music scene. Ready to break neck’s and have fun on stage with his Push. Jaïr is a rhythm driven musician Funk, Ska, DNB, Alt-Groove, House, Hiphop and Disco all play their part in this adventure, for which Jaïr exclusively uses material from (un)released tracks off his own label “Honingrec.”

Expect your senses to be blown wide open in Kriterion during ADE. From October 19 until October 21 we present to you a special program with films, music and audiovisual performances. 

Thursday we start off with the nostalgic 90’s film ‘Human Traffic’. Later in the night there will be an audiovisual performance by Pouya Ehsaei and Tormoz. 

Friday we will explore Afrofuturism on a night organized by the @cpt.collective, ‘Welcome to Afrofuturism’. We’ll screen the films ‘Space is the Place’ (1974) and ‘Drexciya’ (2010), after which we give the stage to Groove God, inventor of the Alt-Groove and a fresh new face in the electronic music scene. Ready to break necks and have fun on stage with his Push. The night will be completed with a DJ set by Sunny Saimuns. 

Saturday we wrap it up with Music For The Eyes (the short films ‘Dustin’ and RoXY’, followed by a Q&A) and an audiovisual performance by QUANZA and Getahun Zagai.

Who said you could only party at a club or rave? With this screening we bring the 90's clubbing culture to the cinema.


For Jip, Lulu, Koop, Nina and Moff, the dead-end jobs they endure during the week just kill the time until Friday night. That's when they cut very loose and get on the crazy roller coaster ride that takes them right through to Monday morning. An adrenaline-pumped comedy, "Human Traffic" chronicles the ups and downs -- both chemical and emotional -- of five friends whose weekends are filled with endless clubbing, pubbing and partying where there are no rules, no limits and no saying "no."
