Lege ruimtes bestaan niet: de vloer waarop wij in Nederlandse theaters optreden is meestal gemaakt van Keruing hout. Keruing groeit vooral in Indonesië en is door illegale ontbossing een ernstig bedreigde boomsoort. Waar deze boom vandaan komt, blaast een levensbedreigende wervelwind door zijn wortels heen. De vloer van ons toneel is besmeurd met bloed. Wat betekent het om op deze niet-meer-boom, maar-nog-niet-grond te staan, op dit lichaam dat vermoord werd door koloniaal geweld? Wij kijken naar deze bomen als geesten. Zij achtervolgen de ruimte en fluisteren verhalen over het regenwoud onder onze voeten. In een wandeling door deze botanische bewijzen van genocide wordt onze beweging onrustig, onschuld voelt onmogelijk. De geesten tonen zich in sporen van houten herinneringen: littekens, krassen, markeringen, snijwonden. Wij houden een seance voor deze geesten om bij hun herinnering te blijven: om het geluid luid te laten klinken van een boom die valt in een bos. Keruing is native to Indonesia, and is now, through illegal deforestation, a critically endangered species. Where this tree comes from, a whirlwind of life and death entangles their roots. The floor of our stages is blood-stained. What does it mean to stand on this no-more-tree, but not-yet-soil, on this body killed by colonial violence? We think of these trees as ghosts. Their presence haunts this space, whispering stories of the rainforest under your feet. In the wake of these botanic evidences of genocide, our movement becomes unsettled, innocence becomes impossible. The ghosts haunt us in traces of wooden memories: scars, scratches, markings, cuts. We hold a seance for these ghosts to stay with their relentless remembering: to invoke the sound of a tree falling in a forest.
