(M)otherhood in the arts How can the art sector take responsibility and facilitate the integration of parenthood and artistic practice? These are the topics we will discuss during this symposium with researchers, institutions, advocacy groups, artists, and creators. "We can endlessly debate within the arts, create performances and exhibitions, publish articles and books on various forms of care and its significance. However, as long as we exclude the ultimate form of long-term care, parenthood, from this discourse, genuine development and progress is not possible." This was written last year by writer, artist, and co-curator of this symposium, Mirthe Berentsen, in Metropolis M. Discussions around the urgency of care within the arts should never be a symbolic gesture and take place within an echo chamber; it must emerge from an active engagement within the social infrastructure of the art field. Registration You can now register via the registration form. The symposium is free of charge. However, we do ask for a contribution of €15 for lunch and drinks afterwards. Upon request, we provide free childcare during the symposium, which you can indicate during your registration. The symposium is developed by Mirthe Berentsen and De Brakke Grond. The language used during the symposium will be a combination of Dutch and English, depending on the subject. More details will follow soon. Below is an overview of the programme. The full programme will be announced in the course of January. Please keep an eye on the Brakke Grond website for updates. In the keynote lecture, prominent British writer, curator, and critic Hettie Judah will speak about her years of research on art, care, and parenthood. In 2022, Judah published the global bestseller "How not to exclude artist mothers (and other parents)," in which she argues that the art world has much to gain by being more open to the needs of artist parents. In 2021, she co-wrote the manifesto 'How not to exclude artist parents: some guidelines for institutions and residencies' with a group of artists. Additionally, together with Jo Harrison she co-founded the Art Working Parents Alliance, a British network for working parents in the arts sector. Maxime van Haeren and Hannah Sweering are speaking on behalf of the Boekman Stichting and are presenting the outcomes of a study on the position of female visual artists in the Netherlands, conducted on behalf of the Niemeijer Fund. Following this, a panel discussion with Van Haeren, Ciska Hoet (cultural journalist and co-director of RoSa vzw), Nixie Van Laere (Kunstenpunt, Flemish support center for professional arts), Lucette ter Borg (art critic, investigative journalist at NRC, board member of Auteursbond), and Anne Breure (co-chair Kunsten ’92 & director of Theater Utrecht) will focus on mapping systemic issues in the art field. What role can advocacy groups and institutions play in sharing knowledge and offering solutions for these issues? Artists, creators, and researchers will share their perspectives on the various ways in which parenthood finds a place within their artistic practice. Contributions will be made by, among others, artist and DJ Jonas Ohlsson, artist and filmmaker Magnus Monfeldt, writer and critic Joke de Wolf, curator, writer, researcher, and director of De Appel Lara Khaldi, theatre maker Line Mertens, researcher and artist Weronika Zielinska-Klein, writer Bregje Hofstede, and artist Richtje Reinsma. Workshops and discussion sessions, led by Platform Aanvang, will provide an opportunity to delve deeper into the day's themes and collectively explore new approaches and concrete tools for a sustainable and equitable art field.
