Please join Kansas City PBS and Laura Riffel Ph.D. on Thursday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. for an in-person workshop for early childcare providers and educators interested in understanding toddler and adolescent meltdowns. When children engage in meltdown behavior, adults frequently tell them to “use their words”. Unfortunately, for most, the words have not yet been taught. Adults cannot give them the words to use while they are having a tantrum. Instead, children should proactively learn co-regulation strategies so they can access coping mechanisms before breaking down. In this workshop, adults will learn how to reinforce positive communication skills by learning about the amygdala, also known as the "fear center" of the brain, as it plays an integral role in regulating emotions and behaviors. Participants will learn how to set up an amygdala recalibration station at home or school, model regulating behaviors, and share with children what is happening in their brains. We will also equip participants with printable breathing cards, coloring books for younger children, age-appropriate videos, and language to help guide discussions. A light meal will be provided. Each attendee will earn two clock hours. This workshop is sponsored by The Francis Family Foundation and Hallmark.
