The combination of modular synthesizer and viola is an uncommon one, but Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer manage to create a distinctive dyad that comes together with grace and truth. They’ve accomplished this by bringing much more than their respective axes to the table. Years of collaboration, cohabitation, shared experience, and separate but equally inspired commitments to utilitarian cultural work bind their disparate timbres together into a singular aesthetic reality.

The two artists met, appropriately, as members of a large ensemble performing Terry Riley’s *In C* for an annual concert organized by Bitchin Bajas at Chicago modern music hub Constellation. Honer & Chiu had been living and working in Chicago for a long time, both active members of the notoriously interconnected improvisational and experimental music scenes, but they were somehow previously unintroduced. Chiu’s musical CV to that point included work with bands like Icy Demons and Chandeliers, but he was mostly known for his visual and graphic design work as Some All None. Honer had primarily worked as an instructor in Chicago, as well as a member of the ensemble Quartet Datura. In 2014, a year after their first collaboration, they decided to migrate to Los Angeles to continue developing their respective careers and crafts in sunnier climes.

Relocation to Los Angeles has proven to be fruitful for both artists. Honer has since become a first-call session player for the likes of Adrian Younge and Beyoncé. She’s also played on recordings by Chloe x Halle, Angel Olsen, Fleet Foxes, and Stanley Clarke, among others, including five recordings with Grammy nominations. Along with her session work, Honer is on the music faculty at California State University. Chiu has expanded his visual work in numerous capacities, in addition to becoming an active intersectional community organizer, and refocusing his musical practice to electronic music composition and sound art. He’s an Assistant Professor at Otis College of Art & Design; has exhibited/performed at The Getty Center, LACMA, and other distinguished locales; has become a resident programmer for Dublab; and has generated a strong unit of regular musical collaborators that includes Celia Hollander, Booker Stardrum, Ben Babbitt, Dustin Wong, Takako Minekawa, and Sam Prekop.

On Friday 27th of September, we’re hyped to announce we’ve got Mary Lattimore hosting the night at murmur. She’ll not only perform parts of her new album, but also provide soundtracks throughout the rest of the night. She’ll also bring a support act which is yet TBA.

"Goodbye, Hotel Arkada," the latest album by American harpist and composer Mary Lattimore, reflects on universal themes of loss and change through six expansive compositions. The album, inspired by a beloved hotel in Croatia facing renovation, serves as a meditation on the ephemeral nature of experiences and places. Lattimore, known for her emotionally resonant music, blends improvisation with refined production, creating some of her most polished work yet. The album features collaborations with artists like Lol Tolhurst, Meg Baird, and Rachel Goswell. Lattimore's music captures fleeting moments and memories, exploring the tension between holding on to the past and embracing change. The inspiration for the title comes from a visit to Hotel Arkada, where Lattimore was struck by the charm of the aging hotel, soon to be modernized, prompting her to "bottle" its essence before it's lost to time.

Topu Lyo

Join us for a special evening on September 10th with Topu Lyo and Salenta De Badisdienne. Their album, "Moon Set, Moon Rise," created during the early days of the pandemic, is a beautiful blend of wistful, contemplative cello and piano music. The live recordings capture their bond and shared experience, promising an intimate and healing musical journey.

Topu and Salenta's connection shines through in every note, creating an atmosphere that feels both peaceful and liberating. The duo’s roots in Brooklyn, where they met and began their musical journey, add an authentic and heartfelt layer to their performances. Their show in Amsterdam is particularly special, as it marks their first European tour since the album's release.

Since its founding in 1996, raster has established itself as an international artistic platform and a label for experimental electronic music which would not be imaginable without the diverse engagement of its associated artists. It was founded with the aim of releasing groundbreaking electronic music and wants to create and maintain spaces for future-oriented experiments. Serial concepts are being pursued, and audiovisual forms of presentation of electronic music were the focus already at an early stage.

In addition to music which has influenced subsequent generations through production techniques, raster also published books (awarded), data carriers (awarded) and graphics, among others. Another aspect includes activities such as installation works, often realized in collaboration with well-known institutions such as ZKM / Karlsruhe, TodaysArt / The Hague, Lenbachhaus / Munich, Ruhrtriennale / Bochum and the Museum of Contemporary Art / Toronto.

Since 2005, raster has also been hosting a well-known, non-commercial music festival. Originally initiated as a private party, the "Electric Campfire" was an annual guest of the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome between 2007 and 2017. Since 2018, the festival has been taking place at different locations every year. Its aim is to bring artists and community into real exchange.

◍ Olaf Bender, born in Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1968, began with experimental film techniques and later joined the avant-garde band AG Geige, exploring music through home computers. He co-founded rastermusic, which evolved into raster-noton, and released minimalist, rhythm-based music as Byetone, with notable albums like "Death of a Typographer" (2008) and "Symeta" (2011), and has remixed for artists like Modeselektor and created sound works for designers such as Rick Owens and NikeLab.

◍ Grischa Lichtenberger is a German electronic musician and visual artist known for his intricate, experimental soundscapes and multimedia installations. Affiliated with the Raster-Noton label, his work blends digital and analog elements, characterized by complex rhythms and glitchy textures. Lichtenberger's critically acclaimed projects challenge traditional music structures and create immersive audio-visual experiences.

This concert is supported by the Free State of Saxony in the context of the campaign "Simply Saxony", and by Goethe-Institut Niederlande.
