SEX... IN THE CITY?
A main focus of the inaugural Porn Film Festival Amsterdam is to engage in a dialogue with the city. Specifically, in this segment, the aim is to explore the concept of the city as a space for sexual freedom. How are sex and freedom taking place under blatant gentrification? Amsterdam is facing a housing crisis that affects many people. But when gentrification affects sex workers in the historic Red Light District, it happens as part of a moralistic project that wants sex to be marginalised from society. This  selection of films places sex in the city to contest patriarchy, capitalism, colonialism, and the police brutality that shields them all.

After the films, we will have a conversation with local activists and sex workers fighting against the gentrification of the Red Light District, and the project of marginalizing sex work even more through the construction of a centre for prostitution on the outskirts of Amsterdam.

Electric Bodies

Gaza (2019) captures the beauty, colour, vibrancy and warmth on display in Gaza. It goes beyond the reach of television news reports to reveal a portrayal of life under occupation. The documentary is directed by Irish filmmakers Garry Keane and Andrew McConnell, and was selected as Ireland’s entry for the 2019 Oscars’ Best International Feature Film.

The screening will be followed by a reflection on the film, holding space for the intense emotions the film may evoke and finding ways to channel grief and anger into meaningful action, facilitated by Asiya from the Gaza Grief Support group at the VU.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Palestinian Counselling Centre (https://www.pcc-jer.org/en).

Throughout the territory we call “Mexico” (and beyond); the triad formed by the State, the corporations and the (para)military groups wage an invisible war against indigenous peoples. Mega-projects, mining, energy extraction, tourism, and drug trafficking are some of the main  forms of capitalism driving the violent dispossession of their ancestral lands, waters, mountains, air, bodies and dignities. But because whenever there is oppression there is resistance, the Indigenous National Council (CNI) and the Center of Human Rights Fray Bartolomé de las Casas (Frayba) are traveling through Slumil K’ajxemk’op, the Land That Does Not Surrender, the Europe from below, to weave and strengthen networks of solidarity in defense of life; here and there.

In the film, the indigenous community of Santa María Ostula is trying to survive the violence and dispossession of their lands in the context of the war against drug trafficking in Mexico. With the uprising of the self-defense groups, the residents who had previously being displaced, could finally return to their lands and begin the reconstruction of their community.

This screening aims to offer a look into one of the many mirrors of struggle of the indigenous communities in Mexico, and to reflect it into our own struggles here; as well as to collect money to help funding the travel of members of the Indigenous National Council (CNI) and the Center of Human Rights Fray Bartolomé de las Casas (Frayba), from Mexico to the Netherlands, and throughout Europe.

Each night is hosted by a long lasting companion of Cavia:

VERA Zienema (https://www.vera-groningen.nl/zienema/), an alternative community-run cinema located in Groningen, opens the first day with a silent film and live music composed by Julia Bekker & Hugo Heinen.

On Friday, Jeffrey's Underground Cinemas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwo2YJeN_dE) will curate the night! As you probably know, Jeffrey has been programming movies at different alternative venues in Amsterdam for 18 years, offering a wide range of forgotten cinematic gems. For this night he has chosen one of the most innovative films of the 1960s.

Again BUT Film Festival (https://www.butff.nl/) will visit Cavia to share their archive. BUT is based in Breda for B-movie, Underground and Trash films. They bring a 16mm film to be shown to the public once again on the big screen. Come by and enjoy a forgotten analogue cult film on Saturday!

On the last MOONS night, Kaboom Animation Festival (https://www.kaboomfestival.nl/), a progressive and inclusive festival in the Netherlands that celebrates animation in all its glorious shapes and sizes, shows 8 short animated films from various countries.

The entrance for all of the screenings is free but donations are very much appreciated.

Practice makes perfect. Does that also apply for an avatar? Nikita Diakur wants to learn a backflip, but that’s not exactly safe. You can break your neck, or land on your head, or hurt your wrists. So, he let his avatar learn the trick. Practicing on a 6-core processor, Fake Nikita makes thousands of attempts to do a backflip with the help of Machine Learning. Highly entertaining and equally hilarious, this experimental film mixes age-old slapstick routines with modern tech.

Starting in a science class with a girl who has a crush, the film rapidly descends into a moldy, furry, wet dream-like experiment. When the fumbly feelings of a crush are held out for too long, they turn ugly – and furry.

Mathieu is weighed down by many questions which put him in a heavy state. But as he gives in to his sadness, the rain becomes tears and his tears become rain. He becomes one with his sadness. It’s his time to dance, and the tears accompany him. This beautiful symbiosis of music and visuals is a music video for a song by French singer-songwriter Mathieu Boogaerts. It was achieved through the cyanotype photographic printing process, giving the short film very soft textures and a wonderful analog look and feel.

Freedom Swimmer

Exploring the effect of past trauma, Freedom Swimmer documents a mass migration story from the 20th century, which is relatively untold in the Western world. Director Olivia Martin McGuire parallels a grandfather’s journey to safety from China (swimming to Hong Kong in the 70s) with his granddaughter’s fight for freedom in Hong Kong today. A timely, captivating story of the search for a better life.

Jeffrey's Underground Cinema: Happy End
Oldrich Lipský | 1967 | Czechoslovakia | 71' |  EN subs

This is one hell of a crazy film, totally unique in the history of cinema.... showing how creative and inventive Czech filmmakers were already back in the 60s. This is the first film I know of that is totally in reverse – in fact it's actually the only one I know... though Memento and Irreversible come close. But this film is radically different because it really does run 100% in reverse – not just the storyline but all the activities are in reverse... dialogue is mouthed backwards, everything moves backwards, people walk backwards, eat backwards. And what makes it such a stroke of genius is how the narrative is constructed – if you played it forward, it would be a typically serious dramatic tragedy, but since it's in reverse it magically becomes its opposite – an innovative black comedy!

This film is also a great exercise in understanding how we view cinema. It shows how thinking forward is actually just a bad habit, and the director of the film really does play with your normalized automatic assumptions of watching movies. This film was never shown to so-called "arthouse" crowds, but to the normal mainstream audience in Czechoslovakia. It just goes to show how open and intelligent the mainstream was back then. Absolutely insane and wonderful. This will be an outrageously rare screening.

The Lutkemeerpolder in Amsterdam-West contains the city's last agricultural land. For centuries, farmers and their fields were part of Amsterdam, but now only one piece remains. And it is precisely there that the municipality has planned huge distribution centers. The plans have been the subject of fierce debate for years

In the film, GroenLinks alderman Marieke van Doorninck defends the arrival of the business park; she is determined to have the distribution centers built. Farmer Trijntje tries with all her might to prevent her organic care farm from disappearing for sheds and trucks. In the meantime, involved Amsterdammers are taking increasingly tougher actions. How did it get this far? Why is the business park actually being built here? Or are there alternatives?

This documentary tells about the colorful and cheerful history of the Amsterdam Ship of Fools, which sailed around the world for more than 30 years to bring theatre, joy and folly. At the helm is the creator of this sailing work of art: captain and actor August Dirks, who lived and worked on the Azart for more than 30 years. Amsterdam's Azartplein is named after this fool's boat. Captain August wanted to sail the VOC route, he said, but in a different way. “Not to steal and kill, but to play and share.” Now stranded – literally – on a South American beach, where the wonderful story continues, led by a local theater group.

Captain August will be present and questions can be asked to him after the film. The photo book AZART De Blauwe Schuit and film posters will be for sale this evening and can be signed by Captain August.
