Default is back as they kick off this cultural season with their second season of their default series.

Six editions will take place between September and December and default have been kind enough to offer a limited amount of tickets for Subba members.

The next edition, default #7, taking place on Septermber 8th, will have performances by the experimental cellist, improviser and electronic musician Dorothy Carlos (NYC / Chicago) and multidisciplinary artist Mhm Mhm (NYC / Amsterdam), -“a maker of blues you can only see once your eyes and ears get adjusted”.

Default den haag is a sound series taking place in the Hague, hosting listening events with a focus on experimental music and sound art performances.

Floris Vanhoof

Together with De Brakke Grond, we present a double bill on November 30th featuring two acts from Flanders. The common denominator: their foundation in and around sound art. This evening, De Mond (Stijn Wybouw & Arno De Bock) will perform alongside Floris Vanhoof. Additionally, Ben Bertrand will collaborate with Manah Depauw. This double bill promises to be a mix of hypnotizing sounds and audiovisual experiments.

DE MOND is the brainchild of Stijn Wybouw and Arno De Bock, two musicians from Brussels. Together, they craft an electrifying blend of mucky vocalizations, tape loops, hypnotic synth sounds, and deep drum beats. There first EP “Glow” will be released by Futura Resistenza in spring ’24. They work together with Musician/visual Artist Floris Vanhoof, who joins the live-sets as a 3th member by making live collages (with gobo’s, color filters, Fresnel, reflecting materials …) on 2 big open Strobes. Artist Floris Vanhoof, who lives and works in Antwerp, explores the boundaries between image, light, and sound. Inspired by structural film and early electronic music, Van hoof creates installations, performances, and compositions. The work of Vanhoof was previously exhibited during the Neighbouring Frequencies exhibition at de Brakke Grond.

Ben Bertrand is a Belgian bass clarinetist and composer. With his instrument and countless machines, Ben creates his live sets with a hypnotic web of sounds. Listening to his music is like sitting at the sea, watching the slow motion of our crazy lives sailing by. Manah Depauw is a Belgian actress, theatre maker and radio host. She is known for pieces like Johnson & Johnson, La Wallifiornie and the movie Welcome Home. The duo collaborated on Black Zodiac, an album narrated by Depauw that centers around themes of science fiction, blended with Bertrand’s layers of manipulated clarinet. This album will be released on 31 October on Nosedrip’s music label Stroom.tv.

After gracing us last year with an unforgettable show, we are ecstatic to welcome ML Buch to Amsterdam once again, this time in the warm intimacy of Concertgebouw’s recital hall. Don’t fret as the days grow darker and shorter, Buch’s 7-string guitar will bring you the right touch of sunny acoustics to brighten your day, week, month, year.

ML Buch is Marie Louise Buch, a Copenhagen-based composer, producer, guitarist and vocalist. Following debut EP ‘Fleshy’ in 2017 she released her critically acclaimed album ‘Skinned’ on Danish imprint Anyines in 2020. ‘Suntub’ is her second full length release, a double album consisting of 15 tracks, and was released in October 2023 on cult new label 15 love. Buch’s compositional practice sketches up sound in an almost architectural way, crafting and assembling raw sonic material into an immersive landscape of her own. Her live performances, both in solo and group formations, are reflective of her love of combining 7-string electric guitars in open tunings with synthetic instruments and electronic experiments. Previously working with themes of digital intimacy and modern love, her latest album lyrically departs toward more worldly, visceral sentiments. Glimmering guitar melodies re-amped through liminal space create the underpinnings for Buch’s musings on nature, the flesh, connection and disconnection.

Get ready to ascend from your seat into a hyper-real dreamscape imbued with touches of alt-rock nostalgia that will keep your ears buzzing for days on end. Trust us when we say this is a performance you won’t want to miss. See you the 22nd of November.

The Concertgebouw was founded in 1888 and presents a broad programme with classical, pop, jazz, global, family concerts and film music of the high quality. There is something different to enjoy every day, and a sublime experience is the aim.

On November 8th we welcome two trios to share their pivoting jams-turned-music to the stage of De Nieuwe Anita.

Tara Clerkin Trio are Pat Benjamin, Sunny Joe Paradisos and Tara Clerkin, three musicians involved in a number of cult Bristol bands over the years before confidently settling down in triangle formation. They are inspired by and borrow from jazz, trip hop, electronica, psychedelia & minimalism, twirling the non-pretentious strands of these threads together into a trippy green winged-cloak, adorning Arthur Russell and dripping in blue jam.

The bodies behind MARIA describe themselves as a “post-religious” band from the Netherlands and Czechia who make outsider pop music with vintage synths and drum machines. The vocals are handled by Katerina Gabriel-Konarovská, while Lyckle Willem Pier de Jong and Bjorn Barendse provide an itchy, intentionally B-grade backdrop drawing on post-punk, C86 and bedroom pop.

Bassvictim

Bringing you bass-heavy, glitchy EDM with an indie-sleaze twist, London duo Bassvictim touches down in Amsterdam for a floor-shaking live show at Garage Noord on October 10th.

Born out of dissatisfaction with the scene, Bassvictim is the project of singer-songwriter Maria Manow and producer Ike Clateman. Following a couple of earlier releases, Bassvictim’s debut album Basspunk is a genre-blending dopamine hit, an amalgamation of the old and the new when it comes to dance music. Their sound carries echoes of all hard-hitting club elements from dubstep to grime to jersey club.

Seedlink⁺ is an Amsterdam-based label founded by ity, Go Me and Yoong in 2019. Their current discography counts 24 releases, of which a number has been released on CD as well as digitally. The artists on the label all explore their own distinct sound, but share an interest in the more contemplative side of electronic music. Even though much of the music released on the label is clearly indebted to the online, Seedlink⁺’s main focus is on the offline and the physical, giving rise to various events at Amsterdam clubs kanaal40 and Garage Noord as well as a recent merchandise collaboration with Baby Reni.

Seedlink⁺ and Subbacultcha are joining forces for a sick lineup. Opening the night with a live performance by skylar followed by dj’s screenage dj and Yoong closing the night.

Amina Hocine

presents their editie drie with composer, sound artist and instrument creator, Amina Hocine. Hocine’s recent work had been centered around a self-made organ, which produces mesmerizing drones with profound psychoacoustic effects.

“One of my earliest memories of sound was when I was in kindergarten. I was (…) four or five years old and alone on a swing, and Hesa Fredrik (the name of the emergency siren of Sweden) came on. I had a profound feeling of loneliness and I remember feeling as if I were stuck in that swing”. Ignited in this juvenile memory, Amina Hocine embarked on a quest to find control of these imposing vibrations. During her studies at The Royal College of Music in Stockholm, the composer and instrument creator developed The Instrument: an organ, tuned in meantone temperament, and constructed out of PVC-pipes, various HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) components and 3D printed parts. The beating heart of it all, pumping Hocine’s creation full of life; a 90 liter air compressor.

presents the gothic pop and EBM of Kontravoid. Music for “deserted corners of misty, strobe-lit clubs”. The one-person act has toured with Boy Harsher, ADULT, Drab Majesty and Hide. On support: the Berlin-based Italo, EBM & synthwave artist Charlie She throws parties under the name Szum where she combines cold mutated electro with sparkling Italo disco. Charlie has collaborated on various film and performance projects—and over the years she developed a killer live show using analogue synthesizers and machines, which she presented at festivals such as Unsound, Black! Factory, Up to Date and Kalabalik Pa Tyrolen.

Subbacultcha and We Are Public present Loom: a recurring (on- and offline) program that weaves together a multitude of creative disciplines. Theatre, performance art, music, talks, visual arts, DJ sets, you name it. This time around: in the Twin Peaks-esque Blauwe Zaal of ‘t Zonnehuis.

For our third edition of 2024, we have invited choreographer & performer Flavia Pinheiro, who “investigates networks of resilience and resistance to existing knowledge systems. In her artistic practice, Flavia imagines unlikely entanglements with non-humans such as bacteria, plants, birds, antelopes and ghosts.” She navigates in different medias (photography, video, performance, urban interventions, installation, sound, writing) to underline how diversity and transversality can contribute to (un)learning colonial pedagogies.

Lyckle & Giacomo will present KK1SRC (Kawai K1 Synth Review Concert), in which they explore a synthesizer from the late 80s. “They are particularly interested in the multiple contexts the instrument has contributed to and in turn have contributed to the machine, ranging from early instruments and the 1980s, when the digital synth democratized many sounds, to the present, in which its sound has become somewhat archaic.” The K1 continues to echo in solitary synth reviews on Youtube: “This is an imagination machine”. Leaning into the predispositions of the machine, Lyckle and Giacomo pick up themes from across these epochs and spheres to explore the narrative potential of the instrument that brought baroque scoring to mundane suburban betrayal. Zeta Lys will DJ during the evening. She blends “an array of club sounds, from dub-heavy rhythms to uk bass and broken beats. The outcome is a constant alternation of different moods and dynamics, sensitively brought together to formulate their own narrative.” Zeta Lys is a regular at Kiosk radio and has performed at Kanal Centre Pompidou, Garage Noord, Slagwerk, FIBER Festival, Horst, C12, among many other places.

The artwork of this installment is created in joint effort by designers Basia Strzeżek & Catherine Hu.

In 2024, Loom will house 5 events, coinciding with talks, releases and a publication. To wrap it all up, we’ll host ‘Loom XL’ at the bookend of the year. “Ginning, opening, cleaning, combing, drawing, spinning, winding, warping, sizing and beaming.”

“Keep Honkin’! I’m Listening to the Spiritual Sound of Ecstatic Black Metal by the Band Agriculture”—reads the ‘bumper sticker merch’ of four-piece blackgaze and post-metal outfit. On the 22nd of September, we’re welcoming Agriculture in OCCII.

On their debut album and upcoming EP Living is Easy, both released on The Flenser, the band explores feelings of ‘ecstatic joy’ through the means of extreme music. We’re excited to announce that Krista Papista will be performing at Goethe Instituut in Amsterdam on December 7th.

Born in Nicosia, and based in Berlin, Krista Papista’s current work engages in developing and queering, politically induced, reinvented versions of history. She explores the way in which the manifestation of contemporary Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Balkan folklore and computerised, punk music, can act as subversive counterpoints to homogeneous, nationalist narratives.
