BEATRIZ brings the vibrant energy of Cuba to the stage—and that’s no coincidence. Pianist and bandleader Laura Argudin was born on the island and named her group after her mother. Based in Rotterdam, the international ensemble has developed an infectious live sound that feels like a sultry night in Havana. Musicality runs in her blood: Laura is the daughter of Latin jazz legend Rodolfo Argudin ‘Peruchín’ and the great-granddaughter of the iconic pianist of the same name.

The repertoire ranges from traditional son montuno and chachachá to fiery Cuban Latin jazz. In 2024, they released their debut EP Momentos, full of danceable, rhythm-driven tracks bursting with energy. BEATRIZ has collaborated with international artists such as Philip Lassiter (known for his work with Prince), Jay Kalo, and Laura’s father, Rodolfo Argudin.

Terrace Concerts  
This concert takes place outdoors, in collaboration with the Muziekgebouw. Right by the water, the sun and wind can be quite present, so please take this into account. In case of bad weather (rain or strong winds), the performance will move to the Entrance Hall, which overlooks the IJ.

It’s all in the name: The Rhythm Hunters, the new band of Belgian drummer and composer Stéphane Galland, is on a quest for extraordinary rhythms. The aim? To naturally and fluidly integrate rhythmic approaches that may initially seem unusual or complex into a coherent musical narrative. Through his teaching at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Galland – known for his work with Ibrahim Maalouf and Aka Moon – assembled a group of exceptionally talented young musicians, continuing the path of his acclaimed project The mystery of Kem.

Thus, The Rhythm Hunters was born, featuring Japanese tenor saxophonist Shoko Igarashi, alto saxophonist Sylvain Debaisieux (also part of ‘The mystery of Kem’), French trumpeter Pierre-Antoine Savoyat, Tunisian pianist Wajdi Riahi, and Dutch bassist Louise van den Heuvel. Their self-titled debut album was released last year on the Dutch label Challenge Records.

4 The Culture

South East Jazz is a free two-day music festival that celebrates the unique energy of Amsterdam-Southeast with jazz in the broadest sense of the word. From soulful classics to electronic improvisation, from local talent to international names – spread across multiple stages, jazz forms the bridge between cultures, generations and worlds. With food, art, dance and a strong community, Southeast will be the place where music connects people on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August.

Jazz Focus Big Band
The Jazz Focus Big Band is bursting with young talent and has been led by conductor Lorenzo Mignacca since 2019. Mignacca continues the legacy of the late Peter Guidi. This 18-piece ensemble breathes new life into the big band repertoire with music by Thad Jones, Cole Porter, Buddy Rich, and Gordon Goodwin. They’ve performed at major venues including the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Concertgebouw, and the Uitmarkt, and have won first prize multiple times at the Prinses Christina Concours.

Alice Leggett Quintet
British saxophonist and composer Alice Leggett is a rising voice in European jazz. She made her mark as a member of Teis Semey’s Super Deluxe Orchestra, won the 2024 Keep an Eye International Jazz Award, and has been an active part of the Dutch jazz scene since graduating from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. In May 2025, her critically acclaimed debut album Birdsong was released on Zennez Records, followed by a successful UK tour. She was also named “One to Watch” by Jazzwise magazine.

Ramón Valle & Maite Hontelé
What began as a one-off duo performance blossomed into a deep musical partnership. Pianist Ramón Valle and trumpeter Maite Hontelé found common ground in their love for melody, freedom, and the Cuban idiom. They’ve performed across Europe and even recorded an album in Havana. Valle is praised for his expressive playing, full of Cuban flair and classical depth; Hontelé for her international career in salsa and her warm, lyrical tone. Together, they create music that speaks straight to the heart.

Eddy Veldman
Opo Yeye (“elevate your soul”) is the vibrant ensemble led by drum veteran Eddy Veldman, one of the pioneers of the Paramaribop sound. With a line-up featuring members of Fra Fra Sound and violinist Yannick Hiwat, the band brings a powerful blend of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and Surinamese rhythms like Kaseko and Kawina. Since 1998, Veldman has led this boundary-pushing group, where groove, improvisation, and cultural richness converge in a high-energy live show.

4 The Culture
According to founders Sarah-Jane Wijdenbosch and MrJetFly, Kawina music rarely gets the platform it deserves. That’s why their initiative 4 The Culture proudly brings this energetic, deeply rooted Surinamese style into the spotlight. What started with a livestream concert in Paradiso has grown into sold-out shows, and even two concerts in Carré. Together with the 16-piece Black Excellence Kawina Orchestra, they offer an uplifting and unifying tribute to Kawina and Suriname.

The Eric Boeren 4Tet weaves together music from the ‘classic’ Ornette Coleman quartet with original compositions by trumpeter Eric Boeren. Saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman shook up the jazz world in the late 1950s. He found improvising over chord changes ‘compulsive’, a rigid approach that, in his view, placed too many restrictions on musicians. His groundbreaking approach wasn’t well received: he was banned from stages, and his saxophone was even destroyed. Still, Coleman held fast to his vision, replacing traditional structures with freer forms of improvisation.

That freedom comes with great responsibility, according to Eric Boeren. “To be free in music requires great discipline. It’s not that anything goes, that would be arbitrariness. No. Musical freedom is like having a meaningful conversation, and the compositions are the topics.” He engages in this musical conversation with improv veterans Michael Moore on alto saxophone, Wilbert de Joode on double bass, and Han Bennink on drums.

Yoràn Vroom: Groove Beest
Drummer Yoràn Vroom returns to Amsterdam-Zuidoost, where it all began for him. In the family concert Groove Beest, he teams up with MC Cheyenne Toney and a powerhouse band to dive into a world of rhythm, dance, and music rooted in his Caribbean heritage. An explosive and interactive concert where standing still is no option. For all ages.

Chatlein i su Zumbi
Percussionist Vernon Chatlein explored the Zikinza sound archive, tracing a path through the rich Afro-Curaçaoan musical history. Inspired by the mysterious style Muzik di Zumbi, he composes new music for his group Chatlein i su Zumbi. With this band, he blends jazz and Latin with Antillean rhythms to create something vibrant and deeply rooted.

Nausyqa
Five young, international super talents united in a quintet: NAUSYQA. These musical storytellers from Portugal, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands bring a fresh buzz to the Dutch jazz scene. Their second album PUNQ takes you on a sound journey. Each composition feels like a musical voyage: immersive, intense, and remarkably cohesive.

BNNYHUNNA
BNNYHUNNA (Benjamin Ankomah) grew up in Amsterdam-Zuidoost and discovered his deep passion for music at an early age. In church, he taught himself piano, drums, and guitar, and developed his gift for composition and production. He has since collaborated with artists like Akwasi and José James, and released his acclaimed debut album Echoes Of Prayers in 2023. His music moves between West African afrobeat, melodic hip-hop, and London-style funk jazz, enhanced by poetry, video, and visual art.

Tuesday night means it is time for a new Tuesday Jam! Still led by saxophonist and winner of the Boy Edgar Prize 2019 Jasper Blom, Tuesday Jam is the place where musicians of all ages and levels meet and inspire each other. With the celebrated jazz department of the Conservatory of Amsterdam only a couple of hundred meters away from our BIMHUIS, there is no lack of impressive talent on stage at anytime. Add some spontanious visits of world-class musicians like Esperanza Spalding, Seamus Blake and Dick Oatts, and you got the perfect mix. In short, this is the session where every jazzmusician and jazzlover should be.

Entrance is free, reservations are not necessary.

With a career spanning over twenty years as a sideman, Zack Lober has finally formed his own band according to his own concept: a perfect marriage of catchy, singable songs with fierce moments of spontaneous collective improvisation. The trio with rising stars Suzan Veneman on trumpet and Sun-Mi Hong on drums will be expanded for the occasion with tenor giant and Boy Edgar Prize winner Jasper Blom.

A native of Montreal, double bassist and composer Zack Lober came up in Boston and played the New York jazz clubs for eleven years, alongside respected band leaders such as Henry Threadgill, David Binney en Seamus Blake. In 2019 he relocated to the Netherlands, where he started this trio, following the examples of Paul Bley and Jimmy Giuffre. Last year the first album by this formation was released on ZenneZ Records. For the recordings at Wisseloord Studios, Zack called in the help of another Dutch jazz luminary, saxophonist Ben van Gelder, who produced the album.

The National Youth Jazz Orchestra is the breeding ground for top talent in the Dutch jazz scene. Led by the innovative guitarist and composer Reinier Baas, the NJJO lifts a new generation of musicians to great heights. For this edition, Baas puts together an orchestra that learns to unite the process of improvisation with a wide range of influences from genres other than jazz.

The challenge is found in the combination, and the balance between challenging the musicians and keeping the audience engaged. Expect fresh energy, boundless improvisation and an innovative sound from these young jazz talents, led by one of Holland’s most exceptional guitarists.

‘Izaline Calister Makes History at BIMHUIS’, headlined the NRC in 2000 following the CD presentation of her debut album in our venue. As a crowning achievement of her career, the singer now returns after exactly 25 years with a new program combining her most beautiful songs and new music.

Calister’s music is a fusion between the traditional music of her birth island Curaçao and jazz with Afro-Caribbean influences. Her body of work connects language regions through translations and her own versions of Dutch and Curaçaoan songs. She has released nine CDs under her own name; has many hits in Curaçao and Aruba; has been honored with an Edison award (2009) and was knighted (2018) for her work and the attention to our slavery past in her music theater performances.

‘This tumba queen sang captivating Antillean songs. She added jazz and salsa, walked barefoot as always, and thus made the ode to the Chopin of Curaçao passionate.’ (NRC)

Opo Yeye (‘elevate your soul’) is an energetic, groundbreaking band led by Eddy Veldman, the Paramaribo-born drum veteran. Expect a dynamic mix of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and Surinamese dance music such as kaseko and kawina. Opo Yeye fuses many rhythms and styles into a unique sound full of groove and improvisation.

As a co-founder of the legendary Surinam Music Ensemble, Eddy Veldman is one of the originators of the Paramaribop sound. Since the 1970s he has played in innovative bands such as Reality and Solat, and since 1998 he is leading Opo Yeye. In its current form, the group has a richly varied line-up including members of the influential Fra Fra Sound and rising star violinist Yannick Hiwat, who played on our stage with his own bands.

We scheppen in alle lagen van de organisatie condities om goed te luisteren voor meer wederzijds begrip. Luisteren naar de muziek, naar makers, naar elkaar, naar de bezoekers en naar de samenleving.
