IMPORTANT UPDATE: BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.)
New location: Het Slotervaart on Friday 31/5, Saturday 1/6 and Sunday 2/6.

We are happy to announce that BODIES AND SUBWOOFER can be experienced from Friday till Sunday at the former Slotervaart hospital. Together with Stefanie Egedy and Care Design Lab we are installing the work on the 8th floor, which is still fully empty.

B.A.S. can be visited at Het Slotervaart on these times:

Friday: 19:30 - 23:00
Saturday: 13:00 - 23:00
Sunday: 13:00 - 20:00

The piece will be played every 5 minutes at the 8th floor, no time slot reservation is required. You are welcome to enter the Het Slotervaart (Louwesweg 6) from the main entrance.

About the work:

Can low frequency sounds create feelings of relaxation and stress reduction? Is an intense sonic experience of vibrations soothing to some, where others might experience discomfort? To enhance the festival theme of Outer/Body, we invite you to step into B.A.S. during all festival days. The artist Stefanie Egedy created the installation BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (B.A.S.) 6.0: TRIPLE R-45 for you to experience the possible interactions between sub-bass, infrasound, bodies, and subwoofers. B.A.S. is a travelling and transforming series of site-specific sound installations and concerts composed of subwoofer arrangements and low frequency sound (LFS).

Stefanie Egedy investigates sound as a composer of conceptual pieces, commissioned works, and experimental electronic music. Focused on researching possibilities with low frequency sound, bodies, and subwoofers, her work stems from installations to live performances as sonic propositions. She runs the label COISAS QUE MATAM (THINGS THAT KILL), researches light-sound relations with Camille Laurent, and has worked with Monom Center for Spatial Sound, Alexis Blake and Chris Salter. Her work was presented at festivals and institutes such as CTM Festival, Berghain, Tresor, Nextones Festival, and The High Line.

The third concert night with the title Liminal Being, taking place at the Brakke Grond, is dedicated to the fusion of natural and synthetic spaces, bodies and the audiovisual aesthetics this produces. Two performances by Nexcyia (Live) and LOREM (Live AV) take you on an immersive journey that leads through themes of otherness, exploring lived or synthetic identity while questioning what makes or defines our human limits. 

Themes of otherness and belonging are at the forefront of Nexcyia’s debut LP, ‘Endless Path of Memory’. Rejecting conventional song structures and the constraints of the tempo grid, the London-based ambient musician and sound artist crafts an atmospheric exploration of the boundaries between reality and illusion, driven by spontaneity rather than a predetermined destination.

LOREM is the music-driven multidisciplinary practice of Italian musician, visual artist, and independent researcher Francesco D’Abbraccio. ‘Time Coils’ is the enigmatic artist’s latest album: a hypercollage of audio materials in which eras of corrupted memories coalesce into diverse cultural influences and reimagined connections that are refracted through ongoing processes of resampling and recomposition.

Concert III: Liminal Being

The festival opens with the concert evening Organ/Body in collaboration with the Orgelpark. FIBER will present two premieres made especially for, and partly within, the Orgelpark. The fusion between organ sounds, software and electronic music is the focus of the evening.

How can air be controlled and used in a new way within traditional organ music? Rotterdam-based musician and composer Casimir Geelhoed breathes new life into two organs in the Orgelpark. For this he uses the hyperorgan, electronics, self-developed software and spatial sound. He will play Deviation live on the hyperorgan. The piece combines hyperorgan and live processing, accompanied by a 12-channel 4DSOUND system. We kindly thank Orgelpark and 4DSOUND for their support. Deviations is commissioned by FIBER and Orgelpark.

Maria W Horn and Mats Erlandsson present a version of The Spectral Organ, adapted to the organs and architecture of the Orgelpark. Horn’s compositional practice uses minimalist structures and piercing power electronics, utilizing both digital and analog synthesis as well as acoustic instruments and audiovisual components. In this setting, the music uses electronically-treated organs to create a hybrid instrument. When playing the pieces, the two performers measure the duration of each chord by the length of their individual breaths, connecting the body to the organ through the medium of air.

Concert I: Festival Opening - Organ/Body

What are the boundaries between bodies and the outside world? Are these hard separated entities as we in the West see ourselves, or are they in reality much more porous and interconnected with the outside world? What ecological systems weave together bodies, both human and non-human, and what technological developments create divisions between inside and outside, the comprehensible and ungraspable?

The exhibition Outer/Body - open for one long weekend at Door Open Space - presents seven artworks by multidisciplinary artists who give their own perspective on a wide range of questions related to the interaction between bodies and their environment. Operating between art, media, science and software development, the artists reflect on social, ecological and technological themes by creating sensory compositions.

Visitors are invited to understand their environment in alternative ways, through the unconventional use of medical equipment to get a different sense of inner and outer bodily dimensions. Discover how technological innovations interact with human perception and augment senses, while at the same time using technology to determine which bodies are excluded and which are not. Learn how the hard boundaries between inside and outside do not hold up in an ecological reality.

On May 30, join us at Bimhuis for an extraordinary exploration of intense emotions, memories, and how they acquire a presence in bodies, under the title Memory Vessels.

How do an inner and outer world relate to each other, when personal turmoil interacts with the chaos of the universe? PYUR performs her latest Subtext release Lucid Anarchy. A pulsing, ethereal soundscape composed of nine prismatic, emotionally raw electronic pieces. Recorded against a fragmented backdrop split between Berlin, a tiny fishing village in Bretagne, the Jura mountains, and a Tyrolean alpine village, the album oscillates between the alienation of human-built environments, and the rawness and vividness of nature. A personal and emotional sonic journal filled with pulsating electronic soundscape that is both minimalist in form and rich in emotional depth.

Hulubalang will bring the haunting, emotionally potent soundscapes of his solo debut album, BUNYI BUNYI TUMBAL to BIMHUIS. Roughly translated to "a synthetic feeling for anonymous sacrifice”, this work was born from a deep dive into Indonesian war archives, drawing our attention to those at the periphery of historical records. From this material, the live AV show was developed with visual artist Brandon Tay. Through brutal noisescapes, ghostly samples, and furious polyrhythms that subvert established club music tropes, BUNYI BUNYI TUMBAL explores the grief and trauma of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia.

On Saturday June 1 FIBER will take over Garage Noord for an evening of deep, mind-expanding electronic and dancefloor vibes. We present a lineup of club artists at Garage Noord, consisting of contemporary blends of different electronic music styles from different parts of the world.

Poly Chain is a distinctive voice in today's landscape of electro-infused electronic music and Kyiv’s club scene. She developed her fierce, yet spacious and hypnotic, style in the music scene in the Ukrainian capital, where different styles and worlds meet. Behind the decks Poly Chain skillfully crafts sets which  weave together diverse influences from electro and techno to IDM and experimental ambient sounds.

Palestinian DJ and producer Oldyungmayn's multifaceted identity is layered through both his productions and performances, influencing an exhilarating musical lexicon of 90's era rave, sharpened sound design, and a wide spectrum of music from fellow Middle Eastern producers. Blending diverse influences, from techno mutations to Arabic musical traditions, his genre-defying mixes and sets act as outlets for emotional expression and dialogue.

Hard hitting, rhythmical and genre-traversing, Rama is a DJ and multidisciplinary artist who bridges sonic worlds. Her sets are adventurous journeys through various sorts of future-focused club music, mutated UK bass, dubstep, rap, Brazilian funk, and percussion-influenced music with Arabic roots — all with a certain industrial edge, technically sharpened to move the body.

Named after the Kurdish tale of a half snake half woman with an uncompromising attitude, Rotterdam-based DJ Shahmaran fearlessly combines broken beats, deconstructed club, and bass music. By frequenting record bins while scavenging online platforms for new producers, their digging is an ode to the duality — and blurring — of the traditional and experimental in electronic music.

Beatrice M. rides the subsonic waves of the dubby and hypnotic spectrum of electronic music. Hailing from the French club scene, they navigate the low-end frequencies of dubstep, bass and half-step, immersive techno.

With a style spun more from texture and mood than limited to any specific tempo or genre, k means likes to throw you in at the deep end. They have a knack for bringing together the trippy, strange, intense, and wondrous together in unexpected ways.

Setting the tone for the club night is DJ Leoni, who will pull you into a spiral of deep and hypnotic electronics. Whether it’s techno, drum ‘n’ bass or dubstep, DJ Leoni skillfully navigates her way through. At the heart of all this lies a deep understanding of the power of rhythm and groove. As an OOST resident from the start, DJ Leoni developed a distinctive sound, which sets her apart as a one-of-a-kind artist. The Amsterdam-based DJ also has a bi-monthly radio show at Radio Radio and is a familiar face at Garage Noord.
