INTERNATIONAL QUEER & MIGRANT FILM FESTIVAL 2025 (10TH ANIIVERSARY)

With our returning series Broedplaats LAB111 Presents, we’re giving a platform and well-deserved spotlight to the filmmakers residing in the artist studios in our monumental building. We’re proud to welcome director Jeroen Houben who will be joined by actress Markoesa Hamer for a Q&A after a special early preview of his film Torch Song. The film will be out nationwide on January 23rd.

After the death of her mother, American singer Liz decides to visit her half-brother Gabe and his friend Joey in the Netherlands. Gabe, an aspiring writer, fears being overshadowed by his successful sister, whose eccentric personality always attracts attention. To make matters worse, it turns out Liz has set her sights on Joey, who inspires her to write new music. As family relationships continue to be disrupted, a complex relationship unfolds between the women that tests everyone’s independence.

Electronic Body Music is the dance floor evolution of Industrial music, with deep roots in Post Punk and Neue Deutsche Welle.

It all started in Germany and Belgium in the early 1980s, when seminal bands such as Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, Front 242, and Liaisons Dangereuses laid the foundations for this new music style, marked by thumping beats, aggressive vocals, and sequenced synth bass lines.

Adrenaline-filled live shows, controversial lyrics, and provocative looks shocked the music press and fueled the audience’s imagination, leaving a burning mark on the hearts and minds of their followers.

Four decades later, Electronic Body Music is regarded as a vital precursor to Techno and modern clubbing music. A wide and devoted fan community from all around the globe keeps its cult alive, organizing regular festivals and dedicated events.

Kübra is zich aan het voorbereiden voor haar huwelijk maar wordt gekweld door Djinns. Haar oude vriend Ebru, een psychiater, probeert haar te helpen en gaat op pad met een exorcist die Kübra wil redden. Oog in oog met de gruwelijke realiteit van bezetenheid slaat Ebru’s oorspronkelijke ongeloof langzaam om.

Dabbe: The Possession wordt door velen gezien als het beste deel uit de iconische Dabbe-serie, de moeder aller Turkse Djinn-horror. Regisseur Hasan Karacadağ studeerde in Japan, was getrouwd met een Japanse en raakte geïnspireerd door Japanse horror. Het wierp zijn vruchten af: met Dabbe 1, een remake van Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s J-horror Pulse uit 2001, introduceerde regisseur Hasan Karacadağ de Djinn in de hedendaagse Turkse cinema. Zijn Dabbe-films zijn nu dankzij streaming ook internationaal cultklassiekers geworden. Kübra want to prep for her marriage but is haunted by Djinns. Her old friend Ebru, a psychiatrist, tries to help her and finds an exorcist who wants to save Kübra. Faced with the gruesome reality of true possession, Ebru’s initial disbelief slowly disappears.

Dabbe: The Possession is seen by many as the best film in the iconic Dabbe film series, the mother of all Turkish Djinn horror. Director Hasan Karacadağ studied in Japan, married a Japanese woman and was inspired by Japanese horror. The result of this cultural influence was Dabbe 1, a remake of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s J-horror film Pulse (2001), which allowed Karacadağ to introduce the Djinn to contemporary Turkish cinema. Thanks to streaming, the Dabbe films are now international cult classics. The Possession, part four in the series, mainly consists of found footage, making for scary and moody Blair Witch vibes in a Turkish Islamic setting.

Fascists who don’t know they’re fascists? That was Paul Verhoeven’s idea when he made his still frighteningly accurate satire Starship Troopers, based on the controversial novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein. With his team from RoboCop – including visual effects wizard Phil Tippett, Imagine 2024’s Guest of Honour, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Starship Troopers – Verhoeven created an underrated, hyperviolent masterpiece. The absurd world of machismo and militarism was his reaction to George W. Bush’s 1990s policies, but feels even more relevant now. And the propaganda videos on tv network FedNet are as hilarious as ever.

Special effects-tovenaar Phil Tippett werkte dertig jaar lang aan deze dystopische nachtmerrie vol monsters en wreedheid.

Een zwijgzame man in een steampunkpak daalt af in een ondergrondse wereld die bevolkt wordt door monsters en hun hulpjes. Hij verslaat ze één voor één op gruwelijke wijze. Vrijwel zonder dialoog of plot creëert animator en regisseur Phil Tippett een visueel overdonderende, dystopische droomwereld.

Met zijn ontwerpen, animaties en stop-motion-werk voor films als Star Wars, RoboCop, Jurassic Park en Starship Troopers verkreeg Phil Tippett in Hollywood een legendarische status. In zijn vrije uurtjes tijdens RoboCop 2 begon hij aan zijn passieproject Mad God, dat hij na bijna dertig jaar eindelijk afrondde. Tippett verbeeldt met virtuoze stop-motion een helse ondergrondse reis, beïnvloed door steampunk, Dante en Jeroen Bosch. Wreedheid is de norm in deze chaotische, dystopische wereld, waarin er niets dan minachting bestaat voor mensen en natuur. Tippetts visuele vuurwerk en Dan Wools muziek maken van Mad God een aanslag op de zintuigen.

The Imagine festival menu is once again richly filled with the best of fantastic film. From sexy vampires to nasty old people and lost chancellors, from feverish visions of the future to goose-throat dramas and everything in between. Imagine, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, takes place from October 24 to November 3 in the FilmHallen Amsterdam, LAB111 and Galerie Beeldend Gesproken.

Theme: 1984 Re:Imagined 
In addition to the first Weekend of Terror, another eye-opener took place in 1984: the fact that the world - thankfully - did not look like the dystopian nightmare predicted by writer George Orwell in his literary classic 1984, published in 1949. In honour of the book's 75th anniversary, and because many of Orwell's themes are more relevant today than ever, 1984 is the inspiration for this year's festival theme, 1984 Re:Imagined. By ‘reimagining’ 1984 in 2024, the festival, like Orwell, addresses pressing contemporary issues, but also gives a stage to modern storytellers who dare to speculate on dystopian future scenarios using fiction. Through the lens of the past, this will hopefully give us a grip on the future.

Imagine Expanded lets fantastic stories and worlds merge the different platforms, film, games and VR. Level Up is a showcase with publicly playable demos of the latest independently produced Dutch and Flemish games. In addition to the makers, various (inter) national guests present. Camera Japan is a Japanese cultural festival organized in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, every year since 2006. In deze feministische musical portretteert Agnès Varda twee vrouwen, Suzanne en Pomme, die op zoek zijn naar vrijheid in een Frankrijk waar hun rechten absoluut niet vanzelfsprekend zijn. Tussen poëzie en realisme vertelt deze ode aan vrijheid over vriendschap en zusterschap, tegen de achtergrond van de grote feministische strijd van de jaren 60 en 70 – van de invoering van gezinsplanning tot de decriminalisering van abortus.

Wordt samen met de korte film AMAL vertoond. De briljante Amal solliciteert na haar afstuderen voor banen bij grote bedrijven. Maar ondanks haar uitstekende CV worden al haar sollicitaties afgewezen. De reden? Op haar portretfoto draagt ze een hijab. Amal zit niet graag stil en besluit een vriendin te helpen die een kapperssalon heeft. Moet ze de glanzende carrière waarvan ze droomt opgeven vanwege haar religieuze overtuiging?

Lars von Trier schokte de filmwereld toen hij Antichrist in première liet gaan op het filmfestival van Cannes in 2009. In dit grafische psychodrama keren een door verdriet geteisterde man en vrouw – een verzengende Willem Dafoe en Charlotte Gainsbourg, winnares van de beste actrice in Cannes – terug naar hun hut diep in het bos na de dood van hun zoontje, waar ze terreur en geweld ondervinden van de natuur en uiteindelijk van elkaar. Maar dit meest confronterende werk tot nu toe van een van de meest controversiële kunstenaars van de hedendaagse cinema is niet zomaar een provocatie. Het is een visueel sublieme, emotioneel verwoestende reis naar de donkerste hoeken van de bezeten menselijke geest; een verontrustende strijd tussen de seksen waarin rationele psychologie het opneemt tegen eeuwenoud bijgeloof; en een uiterst effectieve horrorfilm.

Lars von Trier shook up the film world when he premiered Antichrist at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. In this graphic psychodrama, a grief-stricken man and woman—a searing Willem Dafoe and Cannes best actress winner Charlotte Gainsbourg—retreat to their cabin deep in the woods after the accidental death of their infant son, only to find terror and violence at the hands of nature and, ultimately, each other. But this most confrontational work yet from one of contemporary cinema’s most controversial artists is no mere provocation. It is a visually sublime, emotionally ravaging journey to the darkest corners of the possessed human mind; a disturbing battle of the sexes that pits rational psychology against age-old superstition; and a profoundly effective horror film.
