Tussen 9 en 13 mei zijn er studentenraadsverkiezingen! Jij kunt stemmen op de partij van jouw voorkeur, zowel voor de Centrale Studentenraad als voor de Facultaire Studentenraad. Nog geen idee wat je moet stemmen of wat de verkiezing inhoudt? Op 10 mei organiseert Room for Discussion om 13:00 het Groot UvA Studentenraad Debat met de fractievoorzitters van de vier partijen die meedingen naar een plek in de Centrale Studentenraad. Kom langs en bepaal de toekomst van jouw universiteit!

Er komen verschillende prikkelende stellingen aan bod: Wat vinden de partijen van de Maagdenhuis bezetting? Hoe kijken zij aan tegen verdere democratisering? Moet jij straks per vak kunnen betalen voor je studie? Dienen stilteruimtes enkel om te tot rust te komen, of moet er ruimte zijn voor religie? En moeten alle colleges direct online beschikbaar zijn of is écht college volgen zo slecht nog niet? Over thema’s zoals deze gaan de lijsttrekkers in debat.

Verwacht een scherp debat; stel je vragen en bepaal op wie jij gaat stemmen!

Groot UvA Studentenraad Debat

Room for Discussion is excited to be hosting Eugene Rhuggenaath, the former prime minister of Curaçao, Friday the 20th of May. In his term, Rhuggenaath was faced with various challenges which arose from the ‘independence’ of Curaçao from the Netherlands, along with difficulties brought on by the Covid-19 Pandemic. His government was the first to complete the entire term since Curaçao’s ‘independence’ in 2010. Nevertheless, he was faced with major protests which arose during the pandemic ignited by controversies surrounding financial mismanagement and saturated government salaries. We will look back on 4 years in office, explore the relationship between Curaçao and the Netherlands and investigate the major problems Curaçao faces today. Op 28 mei interviewen wij schrijver en Nederlands student Lale Gül. Zij schreef een autobiografische roman over haar ervaringen in een conservatief Turks Islamitisch huishouden. Na het publiceren van haar boek werd ze overspoelt met haar reacties en zelfs bedreigingen. De gespannen situatie thuis bereikte ook een hoogtepunt, waardoor Gül haar ouderlijk huis moest verlaten.
In voorgaande interviews werd er vooral gesproken over de reacties op haar boek van haar omgeving en de maatschappij. Wij willen het echter hebben over Lale Gül als schrijver, opiniemarker en leeftijdsgenoot.

Het is de spannende kinderdroom van velen om rechercheur te worden en achter zware criminele aan te gaan, net zoals de acteurs in detective series als Flikken Maastricht en Baantjer. Maar wat doet een rechercheur nou echt? Hoe gaan ze te werk? En is het echt wel zo spannend als het lijkt op tv?
We lezen veel over criminaliteit in het nieuws. Zware misdaad is aan de orde van de dag, steeds vaker lijkt georganiseerde criminaliteit hier ook deel van uit te maken. Criminele activiteiten lijken steeds verder door te sijpelen in de samenleving. Klopt dit beeld van toenemende criminaliteit? Hoe heeft zware criminaliteit en georganiseerde misdaad zich ontwikkeld de afgelopen jaren? En wat betekent dit voor de samenleving? Dit soort vragen zullen worden besproken in ons gesprek met Jonne Janssen, het Sectiehoofd Dienst Regionale Recherche van Amsterdam.

Marilyn Waring helped pioneer the feminist critique of mainstream economics for ignoring the unpaid work that women do even though this is essential for sustaining economies. Tune in with us on the 2nd of September to hear critique on GDP, learn more about feminist economics and and perhaps reconceptualize how you see economic growth!

Marilyn Waring is a former New Zealand politician as well as one of the Founders of Feminists Economics. She was elected to the New Zealand Parliament at 23 on an environmental platform (of the conservative New Zealand National Party) with whom she fought for a Nuclear-Free New Zealand. She obtained a D.Phil in Political Economy in 1989 and published her most influential book “If Women Counted” in 1988. Through her academia and writing she has become known as a principle founder and pioneer of Feminist Economics. She has consulted for the UNDP, is an outspoken critic of GDP and currently offered a place at the WHO council of Economics of Health for all.

Marilyn Waring: Pioneer of Feminist Economics

Als onderdeel bij de opening van het academische jaar zal Room for Discussion een speciale sessie organiseren met Maarten Hajer. Hajer was tot vorig jaar directeur van het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving en hoogleraar Bestuur & Beleid aan de UvA en is nu faculteitshoogleraar Urban Futures aan de Universiteit Utrecht, neemt plaats op de Chesterfield. Volgens Hajer zijn slimme steden lerende steden. Wat betekent dit voor de universiteit en voor de maatschappelijke rol van de universiteiten?

Dit jaar staat de Opening Academisch Jaar in het teken van de maatschappelijke opdracht van de Universiteit van Amsterdam in de stad en in (inter)nationaal perspectief. Een open samenleving heeft sterke én toegankelijke universiteiten nodig. Onder de titel Het democratisch tekort zal collegevoorzitter Geert ten Dam tijdens de opening ingaan op de spanning tussen toegankelijkheid, kwaliteit en internationale samenwerking. De vraag om creatieve, kritische, oplossingsgerichte academici die kunnen samenwerken in interdisciplinaire en internationale verbanden en zich thuis voelen in een diversiteit aan culturen groeit. Welk appèl doet dit op de universiteit?

Schrijver en journalist Hassan Bahara laat in een gesproken column zijn licht schijnen over diversiteit en de discussie hierover in de academische gemeenschap. Studentassessor Lianne Schmidt blikt terug op het afgelopen jaar en kijkt vooruit naar de komende maanden. Het programma wordt feestelijk afgesloten in het Atrium.

On the 15th of September we will be discussing the concept of Circular Economy with Thomas Rau.

The circular economy is a concept that rethinks the way our economy works: instead of a linear model, a circular one. In the linear model consists of ‘take, make and dispose’. In a circular economy, the products are not wasted but designed in a way to ensure they can be used all over again.

To illustrate, Thomas Rau applied this concept to his office building in collaboration with Philips. Instead of buying lightbulbs, he wanted to buy the service of light from Philips. The idea is that whenever the producer of the product is responsible for the lifespan, it will try to make the product last as long as possible.  
  
Will the concept of Circular Economy radically change the business models of our economy? Are we going to enter a new era of economic organization, more and more based on services instead of ownership?

Thomas Rau is ranked fourth on the Sustainable top100 of Dutch newspaper Trouw. He has been awarded ‘Architect of the Year 2013’ and received the Oeuvre Award from from the magazine Architect ARC13 for his contribution to sustainable architecture over the past 20 years, as well as for: “his inspiring contribution to the social and architectural agenda.” He is founder of Rau Architects and Turntoo.
