Ibrahim Maalouf

The French-Lebanese trumpeter and composer Ibrahim Maalouf returns to Paradiso. Maalouf is one of the world’s greatest jazz musicians and skillfully bridges jazz, Arabic, and classical music, resulting in a unique and recognizable sound. Maalouf is known for his virtuosic technique and his ability to unite various musical traditions in his work. After multiple jazz albums, a hip-hop album, and a symphony, he is making his debut in electronic music. With a brand new show, he will be performing at Paradiso on Saturday, December 21st.

Khari Lucas, with his musical alias Contour, belongs to a striking group of young artists who blend the traditions of black music with a modern, avant-garde approach to songwriting. Having started out as a producer, he expanded his musical knowledge with albums such as ‘Onwards’ (2022), ‘Love Suite’ (2021) and ‘Weight’ (2021), in which he switches between genres and disciplines such as dark, sample-driven R&B , post-punk and new wave.

Despite these musical excursions, his sound remains recognizable, thanks to his voice, flow and candid lyrics, which in turn are strongly influenced by rap. Khari’s curiosity remains evident on his upcoming album ‘Take Off from Mercy’. This time he leaves the samples behind and focuses on guitar-driven songwriting, with a mix of blues, tropicalia, hip-hop, post-punk and indie rock. The album documents the lessons he learned along the way. Together with his co-producer Omari, Khari worked on the songs in various cities worldwide, with the central theme of transformation through migration.

After the album’s release this fall, he will embark on an extensive tour through the US, UK and Europe, including Amsterdam on February 11.

Thee Sacred Souls

Thee Sacred Souls consists of drummer Alex Garcia, bassist Sal Samano, and singer Josh Lane, who formed the band together in 2019 and secured a record deal within a year with the iconic funk and soul label Daptone Records, once home to artists like Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley. At Thee Sacred Souls, everything revolves around delivering the most beautiful and authentic sound possible; for this reason, the trio chooses to record all their music analog instead of digitally. Their debut singles have been streamed over ten million times, catching the attention of mainstream media such as Rolling Stone, as well as artists like Timbaland and Gary Clark Jr. With lyrical reviews and a growing fanbase, the spotlight on this young band from San Diego appears poised to spread like wildfire in the coming years.

Nubya Garcia

After her fantastic performance at Super-Sonic Jazz Festival 2019 in Paradiso, Nubya Garcia returns to Amsterdam on February 18 for a show in Paradiso. Tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia is one of the standard bearers of England’s vibrant contemporary jazz scene. As a child of Caribbean parents, raised in a creative environment in multicultural London, she was introduced early to genres such as gospel, soul and Latin and the styles so typical of England such as grime, garage and dub. You can hear all these influences in her special compositions, danceable live shows and her choice of music in DJ sets and on the radio, because in addition to being a musician, Garcia is also a resident on the leading NTS radio.

Garcia’s second album Odyssey, due out in September 2024 via Concord Jazz, is an impressive mix of orchestral arrangements with R&B, jazz, broken beat and dub. The result is a grand and layered album that feels light and dreamy, without losing the groove. It is a personal project in which she shows her renewed love for composing music over the past four years.

Super-Sonic Jazz Talk with André Marmot – Unapologetic Expression: The Inside Story of the UK Jazz Explosion
Prior to the show, Super-Sonic Jazz will host a talk in the Basement with author André Marmot. In 2024, Marmot published the book Unapologetic Expression: The Inside Story of the UK Jazz Explosion, offering an in-depth look at the recent revival of the British jazz scene. The book combines interviews with artists like Nubya Garcia and Moses Boyd with stories from collectives such as Steam Down and Ezra Collective, placing the movement within a broader cultural context. Marmot highlights the influence of genres like grime and Afrobeat and the role of communities fostering experimentation and inclusivity. Featuring stunning visuals, the book captures the energy and aesthetic of this musical revolution, serving as an essential document for anyone looking to understand and celebrate the rise of the UK jazz scene.

Orion Sun

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and producer Orion Sun is completely in charge of the creative process behind her music. With her characteristic calm and confident R&B, she has now built up a loyal fan base, who are impatiently waiting for new music. After two years of isolation since the release of her EP ‘Getaway’ in 2022, the moment has finally arrived: Orion is ready to release her self-titled album ‘Orion’.

This album, born from intense heartbreak, explores themes such as love, loss and self-development. Orion makes herself emotionally vulnerable and shows both the peaks and valleys of love. Singles like ‘Already Gone’ and ‘Sweet’ show that balance between embracing pain and seeking escape, while songs like ‘Take My Eyes’ bring peace and reflection.

Y.O.P.E. is the musical experiment of bassist Joop de Graaf, known for his work with Brintex Collective, Imaginarium, Diana Dzhabbar Kwartet and Dandana, among others. Joop studied at the Jazz Department of the Conservatory of Amsterdam and started his own project Y.O.P.E. together with drummer Luis Possollo. In 2022 they recorded their first EP ‘Lost but Here’ together, which sounds like a danceable fusion of electronic jazz and breakbeat. The band later also appeared on the ‘Super-Sonic Family Vol. 2’ LP with their swinging song ‘A Place To Go’. Y.O.P.E.’s latest album ‘Peer Pleasure’ will be released on February 26, 2025, which they will celebrate during their album release show in the Bovenzaal.

On Friday, February 28, Tarriona ‘Tank’ Ball will perform her spoken word show ‘The Heart, The Mind, The Soul’ in the Zonnehuis in Amsterdam. Please note: this is not a regular Tank and the Bangas concert. Tank will perform both music and poetry this evening, accompanied by band leader and musician Norman Spence. Tarriona ‘Tank’ Ball is an American singer and spoken word artist from New Orleans, best known as the frontwoman of Tank and The Bangas.

Her music passionately mixes hip-hop, jazz and R&B into a unique whole. In her lyrics she often addresses social themes, both in her singing and in her spoken and written word. In 2021, she released her first collection of poems, titled Vulnerable AF, in which she explores themes of infatuation, love and heartache. Tank and The Bangas won the 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Contest and were nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Artist category in 2020.

Berhana is not only consciously concerned with his profession, but also with his identity. 

Right now, life is too short for him not to commit authentically to every facet and detail of his calling. On ‘HAN’, the 2019 project, Berhana plays with his name ‘Han’ which is part of his stage and birth name. The understated and lush fusion of R&B, funk and jazz has a narrative feel that guides the listener through the project in a neat and formal manner. The follow-up to ‘HAN’, 2023’s ‘Amén (The Nomad’s Dream)’, Berhana combines the love for his birth name (Amain Berhane), his native language and the concept of a transporting home and who he has become. 

All in all, it serves as an apt nickname. On October 25 he released a sequel called ‘Amén (The Missing Tapes)’. In honor of this project he makes a stop in Paradiso.

Jalen Ngonda

Jalen Ngonda is a gifted songwriter and artist, blending classic and contemporary soul influences to create a unique sound. His critically acclaimed debut album “Come Around And Love Me” was released last year, followed by two new singles in early 2024. Recognized by notable artists like Snoop Dogg, Jill Scott, Kehlani, Olivia Dean, and Elton John, who predicted his stardom, Jalen has been busy with sold-out tours in the USA, UK, and Europe. Despite his hectic schedule, he is already planning new recording sessions. Signed to Daptone Records, Jalen’s rich, nuanced voice and fresh, contemporary music set him apart. His live performances captivate audiences, evoking nostalgia for the golden era of soul while showcasing his modern artistry, making him a once-in-a-generation talent.

Ashley Henry

Ashley Henry is an award-winning jazz pianist, vocalist, composer, and producer. His album Beautiful Vinyl Hunter (2020) received international acclaim and was nominated for BBC 6 Music’s Album of the Year. He has toured as a band member with Christine and the Queens and supported Loyle Carner on his tour. Henry’s sound is influenced by his upbringing in London and his Caribbean roots, blending genres and drawing from classical training and the Black radical tradition. He is inspired by figures such as James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Ahmad Jamal, and Aretha Franklin.

In 2023, Henry launched his own label, Royal Raw Music, with the aim of exploring new musical boundaries. Two years ago, he captivated audiences at the Super-Sonic Jazz Festival in Paradiso. Now, he returns to Amsterdam, this time at Tolhuistuin, to showcase his new album Who We Are.

Apart from organizing events and releasing music, we share background stories about the artists we love and extend knowledge about past and present music. We are building this community together.
