Public reading ceremony , talk and food - Candomblé and Roma traditions
For the third time at Teatro Munganga, Mameto Kaloyá will conduct a public oracle session, honoring the Roma tradition of public divination.
The ceremony begins with anonymous questions placed into a shared vessel and drawn at random. They can be about any subject.
Following this, three participants will be invited to pose direct questions to the oracle.



Luna (formerly Delphine Bedel) artist, Coach and founder Divine by Design and a member of the Tulip Society, will share reflections on the symbols of tarot de Marseille, a sacred optical art dating from the 14th century, which they learned to read with tarot master Alejandro Jodorowsky in Paris.

Luna will offer a reading as part of their ongoing research on the art of tarot, archetypes and divinatory languages.

The session will be guided by Mameto Kaloyá, a non-binary, queer descendant of the Roma diaspora, born in the Candomblé tradition (Maroon communities and houses in Brazil). Kaloyá is an Egbomi (often translated as ‘young priestess’) of the House of Redandá (Cipó-Guaçu, Brazil), and works with different card systems and the Jogo de Búzios (cowrie shell oracle).

The Turkish musician Mert Pekduraner is best known for his work in folk and world music, often with a modern twist. His music combines traditional Turkish melodies with electronic elements, indie-folk and sometimes psychedelic influences. He often uses traditional Turkish instruments (such as the bağlama or ney) in a contemporary production. Many of his songs have a dreamy, emotional atmosphere and sometimes he mixes electronic beats with acoustic folk, creating a unique sound.

The poetic lyrics are often about love, loneliness and philosophical themes.

Mert Pekduraner will be at TEATRO MUNGANGA, joined by his talented fellow musicians!  
The group, which performs pieces from the first and second albums while also incorporating improvisations,  
includes Nihal Saruhanlı on drums, Orlando Cialli on clarinet and duduk, and Ton Felices on double bass.

In 2020, Pekduraner, who introduced the first sounds of future music with his composition "Kıyı (Side by Side  
Venice Biennale Main Theme)" for the 17th Venice Biennale, created a unique audience for himself.

Pekduraner presented his compositional style with the six tracks on his debut studio album, Geriye Ne Kaldı?,  
which was released in 2021. His second album, “DIALOGUES IN THE DARK”, released in 2022, took a deeper  
dive into his compositional approach, with its detailed instrumentation and musical style.  
This album takes listeners on a more in-depth journey into the development of his compositional artistry.

He performed alongside artists such as Erkan Oğur, Mammal Hands, GoGo Penguin, and Erik Truffaz.

This special event will celebrate Orixá Oxalá, an ancient force of nature. Through the priestesses, Oxalá praises the prophecy:

✨ The world will one day know one hundred years of peace, under the rule of children. ✨

During the event, you will have the opportunity to:  
● Ask questions about Brazilian Candomblé and engage directly with elders.  
● Experience a traditional drumming and chanting ceremony.  
●Enjoy a music concert.  
● Share in food and community.

This gathering is inspired by the Festa do Divino, a one-month-long ceremony found in Candomblé Houses and Maroon Communities across Brazil.  
It is a participatory way to create coexistence, build community, and reconnect with ancestry and diaspora.

The event will be hosted by Tulipa's Society, a Society that honors Zahar—a Vungira in the Brazilian Candomblé tradition.  
It is inspired by Sociedade das Tulipas, a sisterhood based at Redandá Candomblé House in Cipó-Guaçu, São Paulo, which has been organizing beneficent events for hospitals treating Wildfire disease and other causes since 1970.

Chieko Donker Duyvis and Juliano Abramovay are a dynamic duo in the world of music, with an eclectic and innovative approach to composition and performance.

Born from a passion for different musical styles, the duo explore the voice, guitar, cello and other string instruments in a harmonious combination.

Chieko and Juliano are rooted in the Brazilian musical tradition, but venture in different musical universes such as Jazz, Japanese and Turkish music. Their collaborations proposes a combination of original compositions and imaginative reinterpretations of traditional pieces, showcasing their ability to bridge cultural and musical divides.

Formed by Chieko, a cellist, singer and composer from Amsterdam with Brazilian/Japanese roots and Juliano, (guitar, ud, composition) from Brazil.

After meeting in São Paulo, they felt such a strong creative connection that they decided to continue as a duo in the Netherlands.

In their music , they explore free improvisations and original compositions as well as Latin American and Japanese folk songs in innovative ways. It’s a joyful experimentation pool for all the instruments they play: rabeca, ud, cello, guitar and voice.

With their music, they bring a beautiful harmonious sound and heartwarming songs as well as adventurous improvisations that leave you on the edge of your seat.

We are happy to announce that the "Roda de choro" is back at Teatro Munganga. Once a month we organise this Brazilian roda (roundtable), where musicians familiar with choro can participate. So if you play guitar, flute, percussion and would like to play with us, get in touch through info@munganga.nl

This roda is led by Elizabeth Fadel on piano and Daniel Montes on 7-string guitar.

Choro is a Brazilian music style from Rio de Janeiro, from the 19th century. it mixes classical music like polca and march, with African rhythms like lundu and maxixe.

The combination makes people smile and even dance.

Choro is een Braziliaanse muziekstijl uit Rio de Janeiro, uit de 19e eeuw. het mengt klassieke muziek als polca en mars, met Afrikaanse ritmes als lundu en maxixe. De combinatie laat mensen glimlachen en zelfs dansen.

South African songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sarah Blake, brings together a combination of jazz, Brazilian, folk, and story-telling in such an elegant and refined manner with a prominent reminiscence of the old standards infused with her new cool.

Versatility, energy and musicality define Lucas Figueiredo Santana, 1993.  
Saxophone player but also clarinet and flute player, the Brazilian musician based in Amsterdam has shown a unique way to express himself through music, crossing over the Brazilian samba-jazz, Bossa Nova and Choro with Jazz.

"Walicho Project & Friends" is een sextet (piano, bas, drums, Latino percussie en zang), een project Latijns-Amerikaanse folklore met Jazz/Rock/Cumbia invloed.

Een muzikale reis door Latijns-Amerika om de wortels van voorouders met moderne stijlen samen te voegen en een tijdloze combinatie te maken.

Een tweede gedeelte worden gastartiesten gepresenteerd, Dúo Ineke Herstel (NL), harp & Daniel Pascual (Argentinië), gitaar, met folklore uit Venezuela en Argentinië en Colectivo Carpe Díem, (dansmuziek),  met een eigen vrolijke ritmes en geluid, een combinatie van cumbia, ska, rock en balada.

Dit trio met deze authentieke muzikanten, brengt een avondvullend programma met een veelzijdig en kleurrijk repertoire. Schitterend stukken van Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn en Herbie Hancock. De mooiste Bossa’s van o.a. Antonio Carlos Jobim en Baden Powel. En prachtige eigen composities van Mariandoro.

Zangeres / Gitariste / Songwriter Mariandoro
is een veelzijdig gepassioneerd zangeres, gitariste, songwriter en zangcoach, geïnspireerd door vele verschillende genres en artiesten uit de Jazz, de Franse Chanson, ,Noord Amerikaanse en Argentijnse Folklore, de Portugese Fado en de Braziliaanse Bossa Nova en Samba. Ze trad op op vele podia en festivals als Jazz zangeres. Tevens deed ze mee aan vele Roda de Samba Concerten in het Bimhuis Het afgelopen jaar deed ze enkele Jazz optredens met Pablo Nahar en Pablo de Haas .
Ze heeft daarnaast al vele jaren een succesvolle zanglespraktijk in de Jordaan

Berend van den Berg, pianist / arrangeur
Hij begon als trompettist bij Jeff Reynolds, speelde in de Frank Grasso Big Band samen met Dee Daniels, Chet Baker en Toots Tielemans. Begeleidde Ann Burton, Astrid Seriese, en Ellen Helmus. Op het North Sea Jazz Festival speelde hij met o.a. Earl Coleman, Idris Mohammed, Walter Booker en met zijn eigen bands. Hij tourde met Hans Mantel door India, samen met Lydia van Dam, John Engels en Bart van LierHij speelt in BBB + Sjoerd Dijkhuizen, heeft zijn eigen trio: Trio Berend van den Berg met Erik Robaard (bas), Joost Kesselaar (drums).

Pablo de Haas, saxofoon en ewi
Pablo speelde als sideman in diverse formaties waaronder: Fra Fra sound, New cool Collective, For Sure, de Molenaar Big Band en met het Rosenberg trio. Verder met George McCrae, Mike del Ferro, het Polo de Haas Quartet, De Dogtroep, het Sven Schuster- en het Pablo Nahar Quartet. Zijn eigen formaties zijn: Maff met Loet van der Lee. Juju Bross met Anton Goudsmit en Stefan Kruger en het Pablo de Haas Quartet.

Tango Orkest Amsterdam laat u de rijke geschiedenis van de Argentijnse tango horen.
Meeslepend, messcherp en verrassend afwisselend neemt het orkest u mee van de danssalons uit de jaren ’40 naar de achteraf cafeetjes waar in het Buenos Aires van nu tango gespeeld wordt.
Met drie bandoneons, negen violen, twee cellos, piano, contrabas en een gepassioneerde zangeres is een concert van Tango Orkest Amsterdam een belevenis!

Teatro Munganga is the theater hall of Munganga: a multidisciplinary forum for artists and art lovers. This monumental building – the former horse tram depot on the Schinkelhavenstraat – is located a few meters from the entrance to the Vondelpark, on the Amstelveenseweg.
