Hij zal worden geïnterviewd door Theo Witte, als lerarenopleider Nederlands jarenlang verbonden aan de RUG. Het is uitdrukkelijk de bedoeling dat het publiek zich in de discussie mengt. De avond begint om 20 uur – inloop vanaf 19.45 uur. Voor de entree vragen we een vrijwillige bijdrage. On September the 25th we have a special performance by Claire Conway. Raised on country radio in her hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, Claire Conway weaves stories with lyrics that are wise, graceful, and honest. Her songs are vivid portraits of her life backed by simple riffs, soft harmonies and moody slide guitar.

On Wednesday 31 July we’ll host a Silent Book Club at Walter’s Bookshop. Bring your book and we’ll read together in silence for an hour. All books and readers are welcome.

We’ll have some snacks and refreshments, but feel free to bring your own preferred snack or drink.

19:15-19:30h – Walk-in, mingle (or not), chat about what you’re going to read
19:30-20:30h – Read in silence
20:30-21:00h – Either keep reading, hang around to talk about what you’re reading, or don’t hang around if you don’t feel like talking

On June 1st we have a special performance by Lindsay Clark from Portland, Oregon at Walter’s Bookshop. She finds a beautiful balance between traditional and English folk, country, and her own version of experimental folk that seems to come from within.

Op zaterdag 18 mei is Trouw-correspondente Cindy Zhu Huijgen ‘s middags te gast in Water’s Bookshop, Oude Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat 10, om te spreken over haar boek ‘Dit is ook China’.  Cindy Zhu Huijgen werd als baby uit China geadopteerd en verhaalt in dit boek over haar adoptiegeschiedenis en haar ervaringen in China als correspondente. Zij wordt geïnterviewd door Britta van Bergeijk.

Huijgen werd als baby uit China geadopteerd. Uit nieuwsgierigheid naar haar geboorteland werd ze er correspondent. Met het uiterlijk waarmee ze als kind in Nederland gediscrimineerd werd, wint ze als journalist het vertrouwen van de gewone Chinees, van activist tot partijlid. Huijgen kan daardoor dicht bij het nieuws komen. Met iedere ontmoeting groeit het besef dat zij het leven had kunnen leiden van de mensen die zij in China spreekt. Ze verlangt ernaar om meer te weten te komen over haar eigen adoptiegeschiedenis. In haar geboorteplaats vindt ze antwoorden over haar afkomst. Dit boek gaat voorbij aan het beeld dat men in het Westen van China heeft, en laat zien het wat het óók is: een land met ruimte voor liefde, kunst en dromen.

Cindy Zhu Huijgen
Cindy Zhu Huijgen werd in 1993 uit China geadopteerd door een Nederlands gezin. In 2019 verhuisde ze naar Beijing om daar als correspondent aan de slag te gaan voor Nederlandse media. Ze was de eerste Nederlandstalige journalist die in Wuhan verslag deed van de coronapandemie. Huijgen werkte als journalist voor onder andere Trouw en VPRO Bureau Buitenland.
