Somewhere near the toilets, an ominous showdown is taking place. In a tantalizing mix of candid lyrics, energetic music and a grimey setting, two friends search for the limits of their ‘faggot friendship*: a very intimate friendship with no hidden romantic feelings. What are the limits of intimacy, now that falling in love plays no role?  

No Matter What is a poignant, theatrical love letter to your very best friend. The performance is an ode to toxic patterns, destructive forces and new forms of intimacy. – ‘Fuck, I wish I was your lover!’  

Intimacy without love and/or sex, what about that? In literature and movies, queer friendships often revolve around a secret, unrequited love (think Call Me By Your Name, Brokeback Mountain, Saltburn). What forms does intimacy take in a relationship where this doesn’t play a role? To explore this more broadly, the creators came up with the framework “faggot friendship.” During the course of the research, it turned out there was little space for such platonic bonds within current systems, leading to a portrait of a dystopian friendship with palpable socio-political overtones.  

*R3LN4CHT recognizes that faggot is a provocative word used in a discriminatory manner. This performance follows in the footsteps of a long history of creators, writers and individuals from the queer community; who reclaimed the word as a slogan. The frame of the ‘faggot friend’ is a conscious choice derived from the queerness of the creative team, including the questions it raises.

Wander through the spaces of Felix and dive into virtual worlds on a contemplative journey into the known/the strange.

Along a meditative route of immersive art, ‘the known/strange’ invites you to zone out and turn inward. Wander through the building of Felix and find virtual reality and short films exploring the concepts of memory, desire and disorientation. Be transfixed by choir harmonies, pointillist memories, misty saunas and double realities, and let this journey of sensory experiences lead you to quiet introspection and imagination.

This program is curated by composer, filmmaker and audiovisual artist Alex Raúl.

Pan Asian Collective (PAC) werpt nieuw licht op de eeuwenoude connectie tussen Azië en Nederland door de lens van de nootmuskaat, een specerij die niet alleen culinaire waarde heeft, maar ook een cruciale rol speelde in de vorming van de moderne wereld. Het evenement verkent de historische, culturele en ecologische impact van de handel in nootmuskaat en nodigt uit tot zowel reflecteren op het koloniale verleden en het heden als het verbeelden van de dag van morgen. 

In het licht van klimaatverandering en de recente toekenning van de prestigieuze Erasmusprijs 2024 aan de Indiase auteur Amitav Ghosh, bekend om zijn werk over postkolonialisme en ecologie, komt het PAC-project op een bijzonder actueel moment. Net als Ghosh stelt PAC de vraag om de relatie tussen mens en natuur te herzien, en zich te richten op het belang van een inclusievere en duurzame toekomst. 

Van Banda-eilanden naar Amsterdamse grachten

De handel in nootmuskaat, afkomstig van de Banda-eilanden op de Molukken, de enige plek waar nootmuskaatbomen van nature groeiden, bracht Nederland ongekende rijkdom. Dit leidde niet alleen tot de opkomst van Amsterdam als een economische macht, maar ook tot verwoestende conflicten, genocide en onderdrukking van de inheemse bevolking. PAC belicht deze vergeten verhalen en duikt in de langdurige impact van de koloniale handel. 

De rol van de VOC, onder leiding van Jan Pieterszoon Coen, betekende het einde van de wederkerige band tussen de Bandanese bevolking en hun natuurlijke omgeving. Het PAC-evenement biedt een kritische kijk op deze geschiedenis en de hedendaagse gevolgen voor de Nederlandse samenleving. 

Ons gedachtegoed dekoloniseren en inheemse kennis erkennen

Binnen dit project krijgt de inheemse kennis die eeuwenlang werd genegeerd, een belangrijke plek. De botanische kennis die werd opgebouwd door de bewoners van de Banda-eilanden werd door de VOC overschaduwd en geëxploiteerd. Georg Everhard Rumphius, een bekende botanicus die voor de VOC werkte, bracht belangrijke werken uit zoals het “Amboinsche Kruidboek”. Wat vaak over het hoofd wordt gezien, is de cruciale rol van Susanna, zijn vrouw uit Ambon, wiens diepgaande kennis van de lokale flora van grote invloed was op zijn werk. Onder meer dit verhaal, en de bredere vraag naar het erkennen van inheemse kennis staat centraal tijdens het evenement. 

Verbondenheid tussen Verleden en Heden

Nootmuskaat mag dan een alledaags ingrediënt zijn in de Nederlandse keuken, maar de geschiedenis ervan herinnert ons aan de diepe banden tussen Nederland en Azië. Deze connectie heeft niet alleen de identiteit van de Aziatische diaspora in Nederland gevormd, maar is ook een symbool van de koloniale exploitatie die nog steeds doorwerkt in hedendaagse discussies over inclusiviteit en duurzaamheid. 

Tijdens “Azië x Nederland – Nootmuskaatverhalen” worden deelnemers uitgenodigd om na te denken over de ecologische verwoesting die de specerijenhandel teweegbracht, evenals over de manieren waarop inheemse kennis ons kan helpen om een duurzamere relatie met de natuur te ontwikkelen in het licht van de klimaatcrisis.

This dynamic exhibition, curated by Tim Wes, is an inspiring journey through the theme of change. Wander through our beautiful building and explore the profound processes of transformation through the eyes of artists Marlou Fernanda, Sebastian Boon and Tim Wes himself. Expect a dynamic programme with film, talks, music and visual arts.

When you plant a seed and it falls into the right soil, it will take root, drastically transform the soil. This disrupts the earth, but it is necessary for growth. Change is inevitable and affects us all, whether in personal growth, our work relationships, or the world around us. At a time when the world is in transition, we want to reflect on the question: how do we experience these changes as individuals?

This new exhibition provides a platform to explore how we can use this time of change to create a positive impact for the future. Wes aims to spark dialogue, explore new perspectives, and invite visitors not only to think but also to feel. Be inspired, enriched, and challenged by art that reveals the theme of change in all its layers.

Expect a dynamic programme with film, talks, music and visual arts. The artist collective the New Avant-Garde, consisting of Marlou Fernanda, Sebastian Boon, and Tim Wes himself, let go of their certainties and open themselves up to the unknown. What happens in the mind of an artist who dares to break with the familiar? How can we, through their art, reflect on our own experiences and challenges?
