Na een prachtige eerste uitvoering in oktober, zijn we heel blij mede te delen dat Cerita Kita in het nieuwe jaar in reprise zal gaan in Felix Meritis. Ga mee op reis langs een route vol podiumkunsten waarin het thema ‘Nusantara’ centraal staat.

Waar verhalen, tradities en kunstvormen, gevoed door de kracht van voorouders, samenkomen in een unieke viering van diversiteit en eenheid. Wandel door Felix Meritis en ervaar hoe de ruimtes tot leven komen met verschillende performances, elk met wortels in de rijke cultuur van de Indonesische archipel. Dit programma is gecureerd door Cheroney Pelupessy.

Nusantara, een woord dat resoneert met de rijke geschiedenis en diversiteit van Indonesië, verwijst naar de immense archipel van talloze eilanden en culturen. Oorspronkelijk gebruikt in het Majapahit-rijk, symboliseert Nusantara vandaag de eenheid binnen de verscheidenheid van Indonesië. Het is ook de naam van de toekomstige hoofdstad in Oost-Kalimantan, en staat als metafoor voor een verenigd Indonesië.

Tijdens deze voorstelling, die zich afspeelt in het monumentale gebouw van Felix Meritis, wordt het publiek uitgenodigd om in groepen een unieke route te bewandelen door verschillende ruimtes van het gebouw. In elke ruimte ontdek je een andere performance, elk met wortels in de rijke cultuur van de archipel – van Maluku, Java tot Bali. De performers putten kracht uit hun diepgewortelde erfgoed en zetten hun persoonlijke verhalen en emoties om in kunst, eerbetoon en reflectie.

We nodigen de performers uit om hun eigen verhalen te vertellen en te transformeren tot kunst, door zich te verbinden met de erfenis van hun voorouders. Door middel van spoken word, muziek en dans zullen ze de herinneringen en spirit van hun voorouders eren. Deze voorstelling staat in het teken van het herdenken, voortzetten en versterken van de tradities en wijsheden die door de generaties heen zijn doorgegeven.

The second edition of The Book Club XL will be taking place on the 8th of December at Felix Meritis, with the support of De Nieuwe Liefde.

The Book Club is a round table conversation that welcomes philosophers and curious minds to discuss ideas brought up within a book. For this special occasion, we will invite the Book Club XL, a unique format of the book club, where we invite a curated list of incredible speakers at the table to discuss about a specific book and get in conversation with the audience attending the event – resulting in a collective philosophical conversation based on literature.

For this special session, we will have the honour to host a conversation about the new avant-garde book “Are We Allowed to Just Dream?”, by LadderBoyz in co-creation with Margot Purgues. A book that focuses on black football history and highlights the achievements, triumphs, struggles and societal issues that come with being a black player in football. In this special session, we will focus on a select collection of quotes from the book and spark a collective conversation about the societal barriers our guests face, their resilience, and their dreams.

The title “Are We Allowed to Just Dream?” is a question that provokes thoughtful conversation and debate, we would like to invite you to join in the conversation at Felix Meritis.

The night will be full of other surprises including incredible guests and performances.

This dynamic exhibition, curated by Tim Wes, is an inspiring journey through the theme of change. Wander through our beautiful building and explore the profound processes of transformation through the eyes of artists Marlou Fernanda, Sebastian Boon and Tim Wes himself. Expect a dynamic programme with film, talks, music and visual arts.

When you plant a seed and it falls into the right soil, it will take root, drastically transform the soil. This disrupts the earth, but it is necessary for growth. Change is inevitable and affects us all, whether in personal growth, our work relationships, or the world around us. At a time when the world is in transition, we want to reflect on the question: how do we experience these changes as individuals?

This new exhibition provides a platform to explore how we can use this time of change to create a positive impact for the future. Wes aims to spark dialogue, explore new perspectives, and invite visitors not only to think but also to feel. Be inspired, enriched, and challenged by art that reveals the theme of change in all its layers.

Expect a dynamic programme with film, talks, music and visual arts. The artist collective the New Avant-Garde, consisting of Marlou Fernanda, Sebastian Boon, and Tim Wes himself, let go of their certainties and open themselves up to the unknown. What happens in the mind of an artist who dares to break with the familiar? How can we, through their art, reflect on our own experiences and challenges?

Laat je inspireren door een avond vol beeld, geluid en toekomstvisies van de Molukse mediamakers en verhalenvertellers van vandaag en morgen.

In de media wordt ‘het Molukse verhaal’ vaak geassocieerd met de koloniale  
geschiedenis en de aankomst van de eerste Molukkers in Nederland in 1951. Maar  
waar houden de Molukse verhalenvertellers van nu zich mee bezig? Hoe verwerken zij de Molukse cultuur, tradities en gebruiken in hedendaagse verhalen? Wat nemen ze mee naar de toekomst? Hoe zal het Molukse verhaal worden vormgegeven anno 2051, als Molukkers 100 jaar in Nederland zijn?

Media in de breedste zin

Tijdens deze eerste editie van ‘Moluks in 2051’ zoomen we in op media in de breedste zin. Hoe wordt media binnen de Molukse gemeenschap vandaag de dag gecreëerd en geconsumeerd? Waarom is het belangrijk om als mediamaker je eigen verhaal te vertellen? En wat kunnen wij van de verhalenvertellers van nu verwachten in de (nabije) toekomst?

De presentatie van deze avond wordt verzorgd door Rio Lekatompessy, bekend van de podcast Molukse Takkie. Rio neemt ons mee op deze onvergetelijke avond vol beeld, geluid en verhalen.

Dit programma is samengesteld door filmregisseur Uriël Matahelumual.

Moluks in 2051: van aankomst naar toekomst

Wist jij dat nootmuskaat, een ogenschijnlijk onschuldig specerij in je keukenkast, een cruciale rol speelde in de vorming van de moderne wereld?

Dit programma werpt nieuw licht op de eeuwenoude connectie tussen Azië en Nederland door de lens van de nootmuskaat, van stadswandeling tot panelgesprekken in het Felix Meritis. Tijdens de derde editie van Azië x Nederland gaat Pan Asian Collective in gesprek met experts over de historische, culturele en ecologische impact van de handel in nootmuskaat. Samen met creatieve makers nodigen we je uit om te reflecteren op het koloniale verleden en heden. Evenals de dag van morgen te verbeelden.

Verhalen:
Urban influencer Rizky Kalebos vertelt over de invloed van de nootmuskaathandel op de vorming van de stad Amsterdam en hoe we dat vandaag de dag nog steeds terug kunnen zien. Nieuwsgierig vanuit zijn Molukse roots deed creatief entrepreneur en auteur Erno Pickee jaren onderzoek naar de specerijenhandel voor zijn graphic novel en theatervoorstelling Molo Uku. Als onderzoeker is socioloog Tamara Soukotta verbonden aan Radboud Universiteit. Zij vertelt wat dekoloniseren betekent en hoe we dat in het dagelijks leven kunnen toepassen. Culinair kunstenaar Maureen de Jong geeft met haar werk De Nootmuskaatmonoloog de nootmuskaat een stem.

Dit programma werd gemaakt door PAC programmamaker en oprichter van ik eet cultuur Melissa Korn en wordt geleid door moderator Dymphie Braun. Gemeente Amsterdam Stadsdeelvoorzitter Centrum Lotte Terwel zal een ceremoniële bijdrage toevoegen aan het programma.

Grote inspiratiebron voor dit programma is het boek De Vloek van de Nootmuskaat geschreven door de laatste Erasmusprijs laureaat Amitav Ghosh.

Stadswandeling vooraf met Rizky Kalebos – UITVERKOCHT
Op 29 november vindt voorafgaand aan het programma in Felix Meritis de stadswandeling met urban influencer Rizky Kalebos plaats. Hij neemt je mee door het centrum van Amsterdam en laat je de kamers, gebouwen en straten zien die verbonden zijn met de nootmuskaathandel.

Over Azië x Nederland
De band tussen Azië en Nederland bestaat al eeuwen. Ondertussen wonen miljoenen mensen met Aziatische roots in Nederland, maar loopt de representatie in de media, beleid en in het dagelijks leven nog steeds achter.  In het project Azië x Nederland zetten we de spotlight op vergeten connecties tussen Azië en Nederland.

On Thursday, November 28, experience the most thought-provoking artworks and performances throughout the spaces of Felix Meritis. During the International Art Talent Festival, fifteen talented creators will present their work and development processes. These talents are part of the 3Package Deal from the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and the Bureau Broedplaatsen of the municipality of Amsterdam.

Join us at Felix Meritis on November 28 and be inspired, amazed, and moved by these talents.

Interdisciplinary, engaged, and playful

The fifteen 3Package Deal talents present innovative art with a focus on interdisciplinary work. For example, Jayliah van Gorkum (coalition Self-taught) creates theatre performances that combine music, dance, roller skating, and martial arts. In the work of these talents, you can recognize a particularly engaged voice. Fariborz Karimi (coalition Urban Realm) explores the concept of self-censorship in his work, inspired by his experiences with censorship in Iran and exoticism in Western Europe. And Denzel Veerkamp (coalition Fashion) expresses the collective pain of the Dutch-Surinamese history through his adventurous and playful creations. The International Art Talent Festival is curated by Jim van Geel in collaboration with producer Rafael Kozdron.

Amsterdam invests in talent

Every year, the 3Package Deal provides fifteen talents with a year of support for affordable living and working spaces, a development budget, coaching, and a network of renowned Amsterdam organizations and institutions. With the help of the 3Package Deal, these talents can fully focus on the next step in their practice, creating new work or conducting research. The artists come from countries including Iran, Beirut, the USA, and the Netherlands. This event will take place in all rooms of Felix Meritis.

Wander through the spaces of Felix and dive into virtual worlds on a contemplative journey into the known/the strange.

Along a meditative route of immersive art, ‘the known/strange’ invites you to zone out and turn inward. Wander through the building of Felix and find virtual reality and short films exploring the concepts of memory, desire and disorientation. Be transfixed by choir harmonies, pointillist memories, misty saunas and double realities, and let this journey of sensory experiences lead you to quiet introspection and imagination.

This program is curated by composer, filmmaker and audiovisual artist Alex Raúl.

Disclaimer: a ticket allows entry to the program during a certain time frame. All elements are included and can be visited during this time frame, but please note there might be a queue for the VR experiences. The short films will run in a loop.

Stories in Felix

The stories told in Felix explore past, present and future, inviting (critical) reflection and imagination. Based on the deeply held belief that the future, too, must be inclusive, we position digital culture as one of our central themes, and exhibit the works of trailblazers, artists and storytellers who make the future tangible.

the known/the strange

Somewhere near the toilets, an ominous showdown is taking place. In a tantalizing mix of candid lyrics, energetic music and a grimey setting, two friends search for the limits of their ‘faggot friendship*: a very intimate friendship with no hidden romantic feelings. What are the limits of intimacy, now that falling in love plays no role?  

No Matter What is a poignant, theatrical love letter to your very best friend. The performance is an ode to toxic patterns, destructive forces and new forms of intimacy. – ‘Fuck, I wish I was your lover!’  

Intimacy without love and/or sex, what about that? In literature and movies, queer friendships often revolve around a secret, unrequited love (think Call Me By Your Name, Brokeback Mountain, Saltburn). What forms does intimacy take in a relationship where this doesn’t play a role? To explore this more broadly, the creators came up with the framework “faggot friendship.” During the course of the research, it turned out there was little space for such platonic bonds within current systems, leading to a portrait of a dystopian friendship with palpable socio-political overtones.  

*R3LN4CHT recognizes that faggot is a provocative word used in a discriminatory manner. This performance follows in the footsteps of a long history of creators, writers and individuals from the queer community; who reclaimed the word as a slogan. The frame of the ‘faggot friend’ is a conscious choice derived from the queerness of the creative team, including the questions it raises.

- Tiga Batang Rumah – Drie krachtige vrouwen brengen de ritmische klanken van de Molukse Tifa, een eerbetoon aan hun voorouders.
- Krishna Sutedjo – Bespeelt de Javaanse rebab en de Balinese suling, versterkt door Wayan Pitriana met Javaanse/Balinese zang en Balinese dans, en put inspiratie uit de muzikale tradities van hun voorouders.
- Djérimo – Spoken word performer met Molukse roots, die woorden gebruikt om de kracht en wijsheid van zijn voorouders te laten resoneren.
- Nasib Katong Dua – Een dansperformance met Cheroney Pelupessy, Bryan Nurhakim & Jermaine Rumahlaiselan, waarin beweging de verbinding met hun voorouders symboliseert.  
    
Beleef een avond waar verhalen, tradities en kunstvormen, gevoed door de kracht van voorouders, samenkomen in een unieke viering van diversiteit en eenheid. Closing the UNBORN theater tour OTION and dropped.dots (music producer) are releasing the music from the show on an EP. For this special occasion they are offering a first time darkroom listening experience, where you will be fully submerged in the sonic vibration of the UNBORN universe.

UNBORN is an intimate theatrical concert blending ambient neo-soul, R&B, hip-hop and indigenous rhythms. Inspired by the infinite in-between of transformation, UNBORN invites you to travel through the inner universe of OTION. Surrounded by emotions like confusion, melancholy and joy, UNBORN creates a moment of reflection and motivates you to kick off your own personal process of transformation. Venture through a world of text, music and projections with the guiding question: “Am I breaking down or unfolding?”

Theo d’Or en AFK stimuleringsprijs-nominee (2024), OTION is a multifaceted artist passionate about theater, dance, choreography, composing, songwriting, and performing. Exploring the spiritual tradition of his afro-surinamese ancestry, OTION developed a deep appreciation for the metaphysical aspects of his art form. As an interdisciplinary artist, his mission is to imagine spaces, rituals, and ceremonies for the contemporary urban environment where others can be moved by the power of sound and reconnect with themselves. His work reflects on the human experience using water, waterbodies, water states and water motion as a source of inspiration, making ‘OTION’ (pronounced ocean) a reference to the element that connects us all.

dropped.dots, an innovative music producer rooted in Argentine soil, began his journey in 2007, drawing from the rich musical heritage of artists like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Peter Gabriel.
